2013 Happy 4th anniversary to Keira Knightley and her husband James Righton, married on this day in the South of France. Their daughter turns 2 this summer. Keira reprises her star-making role this summer in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

2010 Julia Louis-Dreyfus gets her star on the Walk of Fame. They have to rush to fix the star because her name was spelled wrong ("Julia Luis Dreyfus"). She quipped:

1944 Gaslight starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer opens in theaters. The film is the debut of a teenage Angela Lansbury who goes on to a phenomenal career that includes big screen (3 Oscar noms & an Honorary), small screen (18 Emmy nominations), and the stage (5 Tony Awards)
In its honor today: If you've been feeling like you've already peaked just think on Lansbury today. So many acts in that career. There's more left in you to give!

I always find it mind-boggling that an actress so associated with "late blooming career" is one of the youngest actors to reach two Oscar nominations...

Speaking of Keira, is Begin Again the most rewatchable movie in the last 10 years? Every time it's on, my wife and I plop down and watch the whole thing.

@ Ben - Sing Street is infinitely rewatchable as well, so maybe John Carney is carving up a fine niche for himself?
Keira can be pretty amazing and she's not easy to pin down as an actress. She could have had a completely different, mainstream career and chose instead a much more challenging path. I dig her risk taking and her choice of diverse projects, even though results have been mixed. She's become a much more accomplished and divisive perforner than I'd ever figure she would she first time I noticed her, in Bend it Like Backham. Plus she would have been my pick on that dire 2005 Best Actress line-up.
Audrey Hepburn is a favorite also, and a much better actress than usually given credit. She's one those starts whose legend has grown to have a life of its own and whose image has become iconic independently from the work, but when you parse through her movies there is a lot of there there. It would be wonderful to have an Audrey Hepburn retrospective, like we had for Katharine Hepburn.
JLD is a hoot. I love her almost as much as the Emmys do (no one can match the TV Academy in JLD fandom, me thinks). The fact that the Globes have not awarded her work in Veep gives me a bit of second hand embarrassment. They did give her a nom for that gorgeous Enough Said performance, so I can't be too mad at them! :)
I need to watch Gaslight. I've heard conflicting opinions on its quality and whether it withstood the test of time, so now the only remedy is to see it for myself!

Carmen—I agree with you about JLD.
The Emmys can't help it—Veep is thoroughly unrivaled. It's the only comedy on television that's just as potent and captivating as the best dramas on TV. It's unfortunate there's not a wave of shows operating on Veep's level.
Critics like to build up shows like Jane the Virgin, Blackish, Kimmy Schmidt and Crazy Ex Girlfriend but those are high school drama club productions next to Veep. People often mistake their unique representational value with quality. I'm glad those shows exist but they can't touch Veep.
Glancing at the Emmy history for Outstanding Comedy Series, it's amazing how rare truly important/exceptional TV comedies are. You get maybe three or four every decade? Seems like there are triple or quadruple as many outstanding drama series right now.
I think Audrey Hepburn's type of movie star has been harder to replicate than any other kind of stardom. Maybe it's just our times, but that kind of bearing, class, actressing ability, and "good works" just doesn't seem to happen anymore. People like Cate Blanchett get close, but does anyone really want to BE her?
Keira's Pride and Prejudice is one of the sturdiest, most rewatchable films I've ever seen. Totally lives up as an adaptation but flavors in its own things and god, isn't everyone just spectacular in it?

re-watching Pride and Prejudice and Begin Again. I hope you caught the Love Actually sequel
done for Comic Relief.

Hear, hear on all of these lovely ladies. Am I the only one who admires Knightley's performance in A Dangerous Method? It's a *very* tricky part, and she may overplay it at times, but her lakeside confession near the end had me in tears. No one can hold a candle to Hepburn's star turn in Roman Holiday (or Lansbury's chilling performance in The Manchurian Candidate).
