on Kramer vs Kramer with Dustin Hoffman
Since it's Meryl Streep's 68th birthday today, let's gawk at some behind the scenes photos. It's a good way to pay tribute since the Grand Dame of American Cinema has been working pretty much non-stop (except during the 90s when she spent a lot of time with her little children) since the world first fell for her.
Lots more after the jump including Death Becomes Her, Plenty, It's Complicated, Out of Africa, and more...

Meryl in a trucker hat. She can pull that off. I can see her play a trucker. Where is her action movie franchise dammit?
Thank you so much, Nathaniel. Great pics.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY THE ONE AND ONLY MERYL STREEP!!!
Lovely tribute, Nathaniel. It's 2017 and she's still going strong. Long Live Meryl Streep!
Wonderful photos. Thanks for posting.
Stranglehold Streep.
That photo from the set of the French Lieutenant's Wife is majestic.

Thanks for posting these set photos. I really loved Meryl as a teenager but I have to say that she has exceeded everyone's expectations. She is so linked to modern cinema, iconic films and great roles for women. And the fact that she is bigger than ever at 68 is so unusual. I hope she keeps on doing great work - amazing person and performer.
@3rtful. You are truly a horrible person!! If you dislike an actor, just let it go. You must be a lonely person.
Love them all! 💕❤️
She was so amazing in Plenty, a film ripe for rediscovery.
These photos are so great, but my favourites are French Lieutenant's Woman and Sophie's Choice, and then Death Becomes Her because I so enjoy seeing actors interacting with stunt doubles and practical visual effects.
Am I the only one who loves Streep in Defending Your Life? Her character is much like her in person -- capable of saving a child from a burning building, develops an easy rapport with her litigators, and boring in her perfection. But I like how she beams and raises her arms with warmth and recognition when she sees Albert Brooks.
I thought Streep's best performance was in the rarely-discussed Ironweed but what do I really know?
Owl -- i also think she's great in Ironweed. You're not alone.
I love her outfit in Out of Africa, and whatever about Death Becomes Her...she looked good.
I watched August Osage Count twice this week, and I cried every time at the boot story scene;(
as a reminder -- the best Meryl Streep performances (aka my favorites)
1. SILKWOOD
2. DEVIL WEARS PRADA
3. POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE
4. ANGELS IN AMERICA
5. SOPHIE'S CHOICE
6. ADAPTATION
7. KRAMER VS KRAMER
8. IRONWEED
9. A CRY IN THE DARK
10. THE HOURS
and her Oscar record would be 12 nominations (no angels obviously, but add in Bridges of Madison County and Deer Hunter and A Prairie Home Companion) with 4 Oscars (Kramer vs Kramer, Sophie's Choice, Silkwood, and Devil Wears Prada)
Love these Set pics, thank you Nat! 8)
@Owl
She's the absolute cutest in Defending your Life. That noodle scene always makes me smile.
She's really good in Ironweed. Surprisingly her only Oscar nom without a Globe nod. But her fellow actors couldn't pass the great He's Me Pal scene. (although I felt she was more supporting, but whatever)
I wished she was nominated for Death becomes Her. She's just so hilarious there. It NEVER gets boring.
She's always very nice on set, I'm sure. When they shot TIL in London 2011 she noticed a lot of people watching in the cold and ordered for them coffee and/or hot chocolate.
Owl,
I agree, Streep's performance in Ironweed is often overlooked, as is the film. Such wonderful and touching acting. I'd rank it in her Top 5, but's it's so difficult to rank her performances.
The fact that she didn't win for some of the greatest female performances ever ("Silkwood", "A Cry in the Dark", "The Bridges Of Madison County") is egregious. With 20 nominations, she should have had at least 6 Oscars.
I agree with Nat,s 12 noms but would give her 5 oscars adding one for her egregious loss for Adaptation.
Happy Belated Bday, Queen Meryl!!!
May u have many more Oscar noms to come & a 4th win very soon!! =)
Yes she's so hilariously campy in Death Becomes Her, its a shame tt most fans dun rank it in her top ten...Actually a top ten is really soooooooo restrictive, considering the magnitude of her oeuvre....I'm gonna come up w a top 12:
1) A Cry in the Dark
2) Silkwood
3) Sophie's Choice
4) The Bridges of Madison County
5) The Devil Wears Prada
6) Death Becomes Her
7) The French Lt's Woman
8) Postcard from the Edge
9) Kramer vs Kramer
10) Adaptation
11) Doubt
12) Out of Africa
& I still kinda feel tt I left out Plenty..lol
fantastic article
wonderful lists
too many to choose from
watch Its complicated (I know..) but she turns a lightweight film into such a pleasurable confection which only streep can do. nuanced and v funny
Oh
french Lt's woman and Plenty....definitely in too.
it needs 15 for a top 10 list
