C O N S I D E R - Favorites of 2017, 2nd Qtr

THE YEAR'S FIRST HALF IS OVER! But rather than wait for this "halfway mark" for year in review listicles we started at the end of the 1st quarter so you'll have to combine those lists (movies / actresses / actors) with the highlights from your host's April through June screenings for a complete "halfway mark" take. Got it? Unlike many critics orgs and the Oscars, The Film Experience believes that moviegoing is a 12 month long activity and each month can hold worthy efforts.  Here are 4 or 5 highlights of what we've seen the past three months per Oscar category in alpha order. (If a movie has an asterisk beside it is has not yet been released). How will they measure up to what's still to come?

Key movies I regret missing this quarter: Beatriz at Dinner, Gifted, Manifesto, and Their Finest

Alien Covenant for score. That Prometheus theme is so underrated. An actual hummable theme.

Colossal and Free Fire are on my top five.
Lost city of Z and Baby Driver I Will watch till the end of July.

I know everyone feels that Betty Gabriel is the Supporting Actress standout in Get Out but being unfamiliar with Alison Williams made her role all that much more powerful to me,It maybe cos i'm from UK and she's unknown here but she really blew me away, some of her line readings are chilling.

No Logan, Get Out, or Okja?

July 1, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterConMan

Did you see "A Quiet Passion"?!

July 1, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

ConMan:

Logan and Get Out are from the first quarter. Okja is from the second half of the year.

To your question. NO 😎😎😎

I watched Colossal today, and it was unlike anything I was expecting. I loved it, but I'm not sure about the whole white savior part of it.

If Baby Driver doesn't AT LEAST get an Editing nod, there is no justice in the world.

Just saw The Beguiled. You give it much more kudos than I would. I favor the Clint Eastwood version. Maybe because I knew the ending I was less impressed.
I did like Kristin Dunst quite a bit. Kidmsn and Farrell were adequate in their parts.

Baby Driver hopefully gets a sound editing Oscar nod. Golden Globe Comedy/Musical and Actor Comedy/Musical would be good too if they go that route.

The standout of the first half is easily "Get Out" for me. However, of everything (including things yet to be released) I've seen so far this year, it's going to be hard to top "Call Me By Your Name." I am obsessed with that film.

everyone -- GET OUT, PERSONAL SHOPPER, etcetera were in the first quarter list linked at the top of this.

July 2, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Personal Shopper
Get Out
Beatriz at Dinner
It Comes at Night
The Lost City of Z
Maudie

So far, the only films I've seen with potential to end in my top 10 of the year, are...

1. Colossal
2. T2: Trainspotting
3. Get Out

I'm surprised for how underrated Colossal and T2 are. Embarrassing.

July 2, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

My top 5 so far are:

Your Name (Yes. It was eligible for awards last year. Don't care. Wasn't released in US till April)
The Lost City of Z
The Big Sick
Personal Shopper
Their Finest

It's troubling that neither "Beatriz at Dinner?" nor "Get Out" were mentioned. They're not just two of the most masterful films so far this year, they're the most important, considering the situation in our country.

July 3, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJosh Spice

I am confident that"Get Out" will be remembered this coming award season.

I don't know where I should post this, but I'm thinking that a lot of us are underestimating Daniel Craig for supporting in Logan Lucky.....just a hunch. Thoughts?
