Game of Thrones: Cersei

by Murtada

Game of Thrones returns this Sunday. We are ready for it and can’t wait to see what happens, now that Cersei Lannister rules the iron throne. She has always been my favorite character because she brings the drama. Always. Yes she’s evil. Of course she makes stupid mistakes. And eww she sleeps with her twin brother. But she’s also complex and sort of a feminist. Her biggest motivation is the limitation that her gender imposes on her potential. She knows that she’s better than most of the men in her orbit, yet they have more power than her. That pisses her off big time...

She also loves wine which gave us many funny moments to treasure as she reaches for her cup. And did anyone on the show look better than Cersei in her medieval couture during the coronation? Remember back in Season 1 when she threatened Ned while explaining how the game of thrones is played. That’s when my love affair with the character started.

John Snow died and got resurrected. Daenerys has her dragons and Aria her vendettas. But the character I can't wait to see still remains Cersei. Specially now that her inevitable downfall is coming this season and next. You know it will be DRAMATIC.

Who’s your favorite GOT character?

Oh my god, Cersei is my favourite too. When she orchestrated the explosion... my favourite moment in the show. And who wouldn't fuck Nikolai Coster-W if they had the chance? Sibling or not. I kind of hope she wins.

Season 1 of GoT is still the best one. Less magic, less dragons, less zombies, more political intrigue. It was far more interesting (yes, I realize it is a fantasy show and I know I am in the minority, people love their tits and dragons).

The complex/ambiguous characters played by great actors (Cersei, Tywin, Catelyn, Stannis, Tyrion, Robert, Varys, etc) are to me always the most interesting. The one note characters (like Ramsay) and the ones played by lousy/limited actors (Dragon lady being the worst offender) usually interest me the least.

Occasionally a talented actor will rescue a potentially one dimensional character (Joffrey Baratheon and Melisandre come to mind) or a really strong storyline will raise even a mediocre actor (like Kit Harrington's Jon Snow, who's becoming better and better, despite the actor's limitations). The same way, a misbegotten storyline can sink a previous favorite (Tyrion in season 6, Arya for the past two years) and sometimes the entire side plot just happens to be disastrous (Dorne). Only one case I believe an actor ruined a great character and that was Petyr Baelish, who began greatly in Season 1 and by season 4 was wispering menacely every creepy bit of dialogue and looked like he was about to twist his mustache at every line delivery.

Of all the players, Lena Headey is only one I really wish would win an Emmy for her performance (I know she won't).

I always like Sansa. We redheads have to stick together. But of all the surviving characters from season one, she was changed and evolved the most. Partly from the character's growing maturity and Sophie Turner's growing skills as a performer, I have come to hope that Sansa sits on the the throne.

I fell in love with Robb Stark/Richard Madden and still resent his unfortunate demise. I could stare at that face all day.

QUEEN CERSEI LANNISTER IS ALSO MY FAVORITE!
It enraged me for the first several years that the Emmys didn't recognize Lena Headey's magnificent performance and instead went with Emilia's one note boredom.
SHE SHOULD HAVE WON ALL THE AWARDS FOR THE WALK OF SHAME ALONE!

She is deliciously EEEEEVVVVIIIILLLL!!! And I hope she dies as spectacularly as she has lived on this show.

Awesome scene you picked there!

Cersei is a great character and, alongside Dinklage (who has been given sucky story-lines as of late), are the two best acted main characters on the show.

I still abhor the pacing of the show but plot movement actually started happening last season, so I'm hopeful for the upcoming season. I agree with others that have said Jon Snow used to be one of the absolute worst characters on the show but he's improved a shitload recently and has some terrific story-lines last year. Daenerys still sucks. I root for Sansa as the under-dog. We'll see what happened.

[SPOILERS]
Still think the show shot itself in the foot by killing off two of it's four best actors/characters in Michelle Fairly & Sean Bean, but at least their deaths were powerful as fuck.

I second Lena deserved the Emmy for the Walk of Shame season.

Ramsay was a great one-note character btw.

In the books Cersei is bisexual, has had a deep love for Rhaegar Targaryen, and overall more layered than she is in the TV show. But her decision-making skills in the books are even more appalling, or at least it is explained in detail why they are awful. The show doesn't much dwell on that.

The books clearly see her as the poor leader, the very VERY bad choice. There are many mentions, especially from Tyrion (but not only), as to why she's going to demolish the Seven Kingdoms because she's not a smart and/or natural-born leader. And she isn't.

Having said all of that, I really like how Lena Headey plays Cersei. Cumulatively, based on the 6 seasons we have, Cersei is the most intriguing female character of the story.

In the books Arya's my favorite. Very rich, layered, and even mythological person. It's a shame that Bran is the only Stark child that kept the magic powers in the show.

The show has already given Daenerys Targaryen too many big speeches that are not much different from one another. Less of that in season 7, thank you! Daenerys could be interesting, and is more than her dragons, she's the Mad King's daughter for fucks' sake, the show needs to use that.

It'll be interesting to see the Starks reunited fully, as their journeys have been so divergent...I wonder how they will mesh now that they have become such different people.

It is fascinating to see Sansa. I am very much excited to her movie.
