C O N S I D E R - Actors of 2017, 2nd Qtr

With the year's second quarter over, we've begun listing highlights as you saw yesterday with Best Films and Technical Achievements. So here's a listicle of noteworthy male performances we'll eventually compare to what's to come and what came before (the first quarter list is here). These are my personal favorites from screenings and releases from April 1st through June 30th (though not all of these have opened in theaters yet - those that haven't are marked with an asterisk). Herewith the 17 best male performances from the year's second quarter, divvied up into three categories. Did these actors resonate with you?

Disclaimer: Key male actor heavy movies I missed this quarter were Fate of the Furious, Free Fire, King Arthur, Pirates of the Caribbean, Sleight,  and Their Finest. If you've seen them give their MVPs a shout-out.

5 LEADING ACTORS

Jon Bernthal as "Sam" in Sweet Virginia*

Ansel Elgort as "Baby" in Baby Driver...
Brilliant casting of fine performance. Sometimes those two things are fused tight. This movie makes grand use of Elgort's charm offensive affectations, and puts them on the spectrum if you will.

Sam Elliott as "Lee Hayden" in Hero
The interiority. That voice. Ahhh

Michael Fassbender as "Walter/David" in Alien Covenant

Tracy Letts as "Michael" in The Lovers

10 ACTORS IN SUPPORTING ROLES

Jamie Foxx as "Bats" and Jon Hamm as "Buddy" in Baby Driver
Not subtle, no, but the movie calls for broad strokes

Angus Macfadyen as "Murray" in The Lost City of Z

Pavel Nový as "Brona" in Ice Mother

Taisto Oksanen as "Alijoki" in Tom of Finland*

Robert Pattinson as "Henry Costin" in The Lost City of Z
Pattinson is overdoing it in his seeming constant need to look terrible on film (to win respect, a trick usually reserved for beautiful actresses) but at least the work that comes with it is good.

Nick Offerman as "Jeremy Frost" in Hero

Ray Romano as "Terry" in The Big Sick
This parental duet couldn't be more perfect.

Andrew Scott as "Mr. Sherry" in Handsome Devil
How is it that Mr Scott is this perfect in every film he's in?

Amos Tamam as "Shimi" in The Wedding Plan
A wonderfully effective straight man to the film's comic-neurotic lead

2 ACTORS IN LIMITED OR CAMEO ROLES

image is not from "The Wall"

Laith Nakhi as "Juba" in The Wall
He doesn't actually appear in the film but that's quite a voice performance.

Udi Persi as "'Blind' Date" in The Wedding Plan

The exclusion of Kaluuya hurts.

Re earlier comment:

My apologies, didn't realise this was just 2nd Qtr (even though it clearly states in the title.) My bad.

July 2, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

Andrew: This is strictly what he saw in Q2 (April-June). Kaluuya did make it in Q1.

It's that damn Ansel! He's so hot right now!

I want to see the big sick. Romano is king at giving great relaxed performances with great chemistry with co-stars.

FYI. That link takes you to q2 film achievements. Not q1 actor achievements.

I am not sure if they're first or second quarter but...

Jason Sudeikis, Colossal (Lead)
Ewen Bremner, T2 Trainspotting (Supporting)
Ewen Bremner, Wonder Woman (limited or cameo role)

Chris Pine in Wonder Woman!

You gotta be kidding! - Ansel Elgort's so smug and insufferable in Baby Driver!

July 2, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

I second Chris Pine in Wonder Woman.

I aggressively disliked Lost City of Z but Pattinson was really good in it. His was the character I wished the film was about.

July 2, 2017 | Unregistered Commentercatbaskets

Ansel Elgort? Huh? Um.

July 2, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNorman

Ansel - not my cup of tea. Chris Pine - a resounding YES!

Chris Pine in Wonder Woman!

I'm not an Ansel Elgort fan, but my goodness does Wright know how to use him in Baby Driver! It's a great Movie Star performance. I also really loved Colin Farrell in The Beguiled. That's a performance that will probably be ignored by most when it comes to accolades, but I loved the way he calibrated his performance based on the scene partner. His body language with Kidman, Dunst, Fanning, and the younger girls is so distinct. Really subtle, but precise work. Foxx (who I'm usually lukewarm on) and Hamm are also great in Baby Driver.

Michael Rooker was great as Yondu in GotG2, stole the show from the Guardians who were all weirdly underused.

I totally reckon John Lithgow will get some attention at the end of the year for BEATRIZ AT DINNER considering the political climate. I haven't seen the film, but he is beloved and if I know Lithgow it's a big performance whereas Salma might be too small to stand out with all the year-end lead performances.

If justice exists Sam Elliott in The Hero would be a strong contender to the Oscars. I do not know who is the studio behind the movie but I hope there is a strong campaign for him.

July 2, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterHarmodio

I would definitely add Chris Pine in Wonder Woman and honestly, also Charlie Hunnam in Lost City of Z.
