Catch Up with Our "A League of Their Own" Throwback!

Happy Fourth of July, readers! It's been a busy holiday weekend, but have you caught up to our A League of Their Own 25th anniversary trade-off retrospective? Well if you haven't, here's the play-by-play:

Sports are an American past-time on national holidays but if athletics aren't your thing, maybe a dive into actressing will suffice! Have fun in the comments: which Rockford Peach is your favorite? What one Oscar nomination would you bestow this unnominated classic? When is it appropriate to cry in baseball? Tell us your League thoughts!

Fav Peach - boring I know, but it's got to be All the Way Mae, one of those perfect marriages of star persona, character and performance. MVP in term of actressing is undoubtedly Geena Davis

Oscar nom - why it only gotta be one? The film was unsurprisingly but unfairly ignored. That Oscar year was actually pretty strong (Unforgiven, Howard's End, A Few Good Men) but I would definitely give it the Scent of a Woman noms on Picture and Director - that looks like a vaguely embarrassing pick now, while League has shown sturdy legs. This recap has also let me appreciate much more the use of montage in the film which really drives the plot, so perhaps a sneaky editing nom would not be out of question?

The only reason to cry in baseball is if your skirt is too short to effectively play the game. A scenario which is explored with great clarity in this film :-)

Fav peach: Tough one, but I love Doris. Sassy, hilarious, and tough. She bolstered Madonna's performance with her anchoring support. I miss Rosie O'Donnell's easy charm and sly humor in film. She had a string of pretty decent films in the 90s that were bettered by her presence- A League of Their Own, Sleepless in Seattle, Now and Then, Harriet the Spy. Come back to film Rosie!

Oscar nom: I'd give it to Tom Hanks because this is a classic supporting comedic performance that has stood the test of time. More noms for great comedy perfs, damnit!

It's appropriate to cry in baseball when you get hit by the ball? That looks pretty painful.
