The Incredible Linking Man
• The Cut "I'm rooting for the Lannisters" fun piece on Game of Thrones (which I still read about on occasion even though I haven't watched since season 2)
• /Film Guillermo del Toro's official tequila looks like it's from one of his movies
• Vulture every Charlize Theron performance ranked. Interesting list though I quibble with the order (as they seem to equate the quality of the movies with the quality of her performance and Theron is precisely the star she is because she is often able to be good even in terrible pictures). Also Young Adult should be #1
• Playbill all star cast lined up for Steve Martin's next Broadway show (after his musical Bright Star), this one's a comedy called Meteor Shower
• Browbeat the internet goes wild for old Russ Tamblyn dancing clip from 1956
• Tracking Board Nicole Kidman is in talks to headline a crime thriller called Destroyer directed by Karyn Kusama. Kusama is promising that though it's a genre film it's also "a beautiful character study of an incredible female"
• Variety we were wondering when Ruth Negga would start lining up big roles after Loving. She'll star opposite Brad Pitt in the sci-fi movie Ad Astra
• Awards Daily This is Us has lost one of its Emmy nominations, costume design.
• The Wrap this piece about Marvel's plans for Spider-Man got a lot of internet pass-around but it really doesn't tell you much other than they're going to make Spidey a thing in all the crossover movies
Two pieces about criticism/discussion of racial politics in movies/theaters right now
• American Theater a thoughtful piece on the counterproductive assault on Broadway's Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. (We haven't yet heard if the show is actually closing following it's poorly handled casting changes but it might... but the producers were apparently considering it)
• Birth Movies Death a very navel gazing piece about being an ally and trying to navigate pop culture criticism in the current political climate and intersectional age

Handsome talented Aaron Tveit is taking on the classic role of Bobby in another production of Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece (one of them, at least) Company. This one starts in a couple of days in Massachusetts so go if you live near there and report back. Here he is rehearsing...

The Charlize Theron performances list was strange, like you said, it seems they went with the quality of the movies, (after they specially said that it's not the case). Then how is her Prometheus doing nothing performance besides getting ball rolled killed ranked higher than campy, go for broke Ravenna in a shit movie? What was that?
Also, 'Young Adult' is not number one!?
I guess Nathaniel always said a list is personal.
Hope Tully will be a quarter good as Young Adult!
I find Theron to be overpraised. That list is kind of depressing, no? The only time I've considered her to be great was in Young Adult. (Note:I have not seen monster)
Neither Hardy or Theron really brought all that much to their roles in Fury Road. A whole host of actresses would have brought something more to the table (like Houlte did) - Just think of someone like Moss, Mara or Dawson. It's unfortunate really.
My top 3 would rank like this,
Young Adult
Monster [Huh, you should try seek out for Monster, it's good and aged well (Someone said that on this site, I fully agree!) ]
Fury Road
Her filmography is not good so I don't feel she was ever overpraised.
I'm from South Africa so I have to defend my Queen.
Maybe hope in the future she will have better roles to play.
The NYFF main slate was announced. I'm going to cry from joy.
Obviously Young Adult is Theron's greatest performance -
I think her Monster-performance is one of the most overrated of all time.
Great Comet is closing, announced today, on 9/3. Alas.
I can say with pretty clear certainty that Theron's 10 best performances are:
Young Adult
Monster
Mad Max: Fury Road
Snow White and the Huntsman
Atomic Blonde
The Burning Plain
Two Days in the Valley
The Devil's Advocate
The Curse of the Jade Scorpion
Aeon Flux
And to think, four of her five best are from the last five years or so alone! (There's a lot more mileage left in our gal.)
Theron's filmography is hideous. Correction she'll never have the unwatchable mess that makes up Jolie's filmography including her work as a director -- but it is absolutely strange these huge stars just have junk on their resume and none of this work is about building up your goodwill for the projects you really want to do. You just have crap taste and instincts.
@ Markeo
What did you think about her in North Country?

Back to the old name, I see. Your last sentence sums up a lot of successful actors.
Ruth Negga! Love her in Preacher.
Great Comet - the whole thing makes me so sad. It is an amazing theatrical experience, and what's more, crew and cast was already more diverse than so many TV and film productions. As a long time theater patron, I lament the fact that so many amazing stage actors lose out on roles because producers need NAMES to sell shows (see also the plight of voice actors).
After her greatness in Young Adult and Monster, Theron is anywhere from fine to pretty good in a whole lot of movies.
Pam, producers think they need names to sell tickets because they don't really do anything else very well to sell their shows. That article links to a really good Twitter thread about how awful 99% of Broadway marketing is: https://twitter.com/josesolismayen/status/892443892523700227
I am assuming Negga is Pitt's love interest even with the age difference. But hopefully she has a more interesting role.
