Third Actress' the Charm for Lisbeth Salander?

Claire Foy is confirmed to be the new Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel, The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Rumours have been flying about Foy playing the part since the spring, but it has now become official. Foy will become the third actress to play the iconic part of the tattooed pierced hacker. The film will team Foy with director Fede Alvarez, who helmed 2016’s Don’t Breathe. The plan is to release in October of next year.
Of course one can’t process this news without thinking of Rooney Mara. When news of this reboot was first reported last November, she announced her interest...
As far as I know I’m doing it until someone tells me otherwise. And then I still might do it!
Then way before that, the Sony hack gave us her heartbreakingly polite inquiry to the suits behind the sequels. Remember that? However we’d venture to say Mara will be alright. She already has both Therese Belivet (in Carol) and Lisbeth Salander, surely she wins at getting great roles.
In addition, this movie is not based on the two remaining books in the original trilogy, that she was expecting to make with David Fincher. The Girl in the Spider’s Web, published in 2015, is not authored by Stieg Larsson, the series’ creator and author of the first three Millennium books. Larsson died in 2004. This one was written after his death by David Lagercrantz, and the reviews for the book were mixed to positive. For all we know this sequel could be another Silence of Lambs / Hannibal situation. And nobody wants to be in that situation.
As for Foy, going from Queen Elizabeth II (in The Crown) to Salander could definitively show her range, so we get why she’d want to do it. She has big shoes to fill though, not just Mara but also the original Lisbeth Salander: Noomi Rapace who played the part in three Swedish-language films.
Who was your favorite Salander? And who would you cast to replace Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist?

Abort. Rapace owned this character, Mara acquitted herself quite well, but I cannot see Foy in this role, from that book (which obviously may be the point). The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo didn't even do that well at the box office, so Sony must be hopelessly optimistic that they somehow can do better without Fincher.
I'm up for it I guess. I grow to love Foy but this is a lot of stretch.
Mara's performance is once in a lifetime good and Dragon Tatoo is bonkers amazing. I would prefer to see the Fincher's trilogy cause I need franchise variety and it would be sad to see the original books go to waste in hollywood.
I can't understand why the studio wouldn't have wanted to do the whole trilogy when they got Oscar attention (including a very uncommon actress nom) and one of the great modern directors at the helm. I guess it just didn't do well enough at the box office: abt $230mill form a (very high) $90 budget... what a wasted opportunity!
Carlos -- yeah, i feel the same. why would it be more successful by changing up the team? when people really liked that film? at least let Mara stay on -- who *didn't* like her in that role?
Mara was so freakin good and is a star. Still my favorite performance from her, I think, with Carol in second place. She was spectacular. This just makes zero sense to me.
i hate Rooney Mara ( even in Carol) but her take on Lisbeth Salander was phenomenal...
I haven't seen the original Swedish films or read the novels but the 2011 film of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is my favourite Fincher film and Rooney Mara is amazing in it. As is Daniel Craig; it's my favourite non-Bond performance of his. So I feel a bit ambivalent about this news. I hope it's good, but would have loved to see the previous gang back. Here's hoping it's good in its own right.
I'd not seen that email before. So precious! I don't know why, but I never expected that level of sincerity from her. What a bummer overall. I loved Dragon Tattoo so much - every member of the team was on fire! Maybe they'll all find a different project to work on together at some point.
That email from Rooney Mara is so cute. That role was near and dear to her heart. Weird that Sony didn't ask her back, particularly since it was a star-making role for her. Perhaps her quote was too high and Foy is cheaper?
But whatever - she has two interesting Garth Davis projects coming up, as well as a new film from the great Gus Van Sant.
Everything about this feels B-list. It's a film based on material not written by the original writer, starring someone who's not got an Oscar nomination, without James Bond, and directed by someone who's not a genius. It's not Silence of the Lambs to Hannibal - it's Silence of the Lambs to Hannibal Rising.

Well I absolutely LOVE the Fincher version and Mara is to die for cool in it. The whole concept is so GREAT where the people both in front and behind the camera found their groove.
I agree with Scott that this all smell like a B list thing.
I have low hopes for Claire Foy and her take on Salander
Yeah, strange to abandon the star that got the film a major Oscar nomination but I'm okay with them replacing Craig. Sure, he's a big name but he was miscast and didn't get the character. He played it too cool and too, well, Bond-y. This is a journalist, he should be at least a little rattled by the trouble he finds himself in but Craig barely registered anything going on around him.
