I want to watch the Favourite so badly. Its one of those brilliant concepts I wish I came up with. And Im basically in love with Olivia Colman and am quite fond of Stone and Weisz so Im losing my shit. Yorgos is a genius and for him to trust a script....I need that movie in my mouth rn. Also, Im ever curious as to what the next big trend will be. What will come after Superheroes? Cuz trust me itll stop being en vogue within the next decade.
I rewatched Weekend (2011) and am now super emotional. I want a follow up film.
AACTA nominations came out today. They have expanded some categories to include Australian contributions to non-Australian movies (e.g. BLACK PANTHER got a nom for Visual Effects). BOY ERASED got quite a few noms,including Best Picture and Director, and it was partly funded by the Edgertons' Blue-Tongue production company, BUT it is listed in imdb as from "USA", BUT Lucas Hedges got a Best Actor nom, so I am still slightly confused.
I watched The Book of Henry earlier today. People liked this? What the fuck?

In the WIDOWS trailer we are being shown in the UK everyone who has ever won or been nominated for an award is 'Academy Award Nominee (or winner for Viola), 'Golden Globe Winner' until the end of the list where it just says 'and Liam Neeson'. Is that because they have carelessly forgotten he was nominated for SL or perhaps his choice or because he obviously dies early in the film (Not a spoiler!). It really looks odd to me every time I see it!!

Teresa Wright having to withdraw from Duel In The Sun due to Pregnancy and how she'd be, if one extra hit and stretching of her range thus far would have helped prolong her peak years a tad.
Saw "Mandy" in a movie theater yesterday. Wow! I spend a lot of my time watching Randolph Scott westerns, 40's and 50's obscurities and vintage musicals. So who'd have thought I'd get so caught up in this gory heavy metal acid trip of a film? But did I ever! Director Panos Cosmatos is a real virtuoso.Maintaining - from start to finish - an unbelievable level of ominous visual ecstasy and adrenaline pumping momentum. Editing and art direction are superb too. And the three principals (Nic Cage, Andrea Riseborough and Linus Roache are all terrific. Roache, a British actor I've admired since "Priest" in the 90's is hellishly effective as a terrifying Manson-like figure. I guess it's not in the cards but I'd certainly have him in the supporting actor hunt this year.
After seeing "BlacKKKlansman", I have little doubt it'll sweep DGA + GG Director + Oscar Picture/Director/Adapted/Film Editing.
Seriously, is people not paying attention to the obvious? An African American director NEVER won. His main competition are: Chazelle (just won), Cuarón (just won and would make the 5th mexican in 6 years and is also winning 1-2 more Oscars: Foreign Film and Original Screenplay), Cooper (a first timer, for a remake), Farrelly (is he due, maybe for There's Something About Mary? isn't him winning Original, if Cuarón doesn't?), McKay (just won screenplay) and Jenkins (ditto, plus they're not giving him Best Director as the first african-american director, in front of Lee).
Plus: the movie is exactly what these Trump times need.
Plus: similarities with Schindler's List in scope, editing, and importance.
Plus: it's SO winning DGA and GG Director.
Plus: it's still high in the ranks despite its early release in Cannes, and likely to be championed - along Roma - on critics precursors.
Plus: it's going to have HUGE support on its way to Oscar night... from Oprah to Denzell...
Seriously, how can it lose? In front of Driving Miss Daisy 2? A Star is Born 4th? A film in Spanish? In front of Chazelle's and Jenkins'? Think twice.
I like lists like many of you and when I was mentally evaluating the films I have seen so far this year, I realised that my top 5 are all foreign-language films. After extending it to 10 well-liked films, there were only 3 English-language films in my list. Are foreign-language films truly exceptional this particular year? How much non-English-language films have I not seen every year that are many many times worthier than the ones that got publicised attention? Thank heavens for international film festivals where little cinematic jewels can be found often without trumpets, bolts of fire or sound of distant drumming.
A crazy nazi just won the election here in Brazil, so what's in my mind is "I need to watch more comedies" to relax right now.
Fearing that Glennie's chances of a nomination, let alone a win, are fading faster than her hairline.

All of these film critics are tweeting their top 10 non-English language films for that BBC poll, and I haven't seen so many of them. And now that FilmStruck is going away, they'll be harder to locate than ever.
Watched ON CHESIL BEACH last night on Amazon Prime. Very good performances from Ronan and Howle. Boy, Ian McEwan has a lot to say about marriage (see also The Children Act).
And IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE made the BBC's top 10 of the best foreign language films, so I am happy. I LOVE THAT MOVIE SO MUCH!!!

I always get frustrated that so many great movies are released in October-December. And then as a result, some of them flop, like What They Had and maybe Wildlife too now. If they were released earlier, they may have been more successful like Leave No Trace and Eighth Grade.
Think The Wife should’ve been release like Still Alice-sometime after Christmas when voting season starts and the performance is still fresh. The New Year almost breathes in Julianne Moore time/Glenn Clise time). Jockeying as the frontrunner from a summer release is a mighty gallop. Last year-who remembered Holly Hunter from summer released The Big Sick at voting time)?

With no disrespect to Bening and Pfeiffer, I think Sigourney Weaver will jump to the front of the "overdue" line if Glenn Close wins this year. Or at least, I hope so.
I can imagine Sigourney stumbling into an I, Tonya-style project where festival raves snowball into an Oscar campaign no one saw coming. Janney definitely wasn't "playing the game" until she was winning it, career-wise. Fortunately, Weaver keeps working.
Love the BBC list of Top 100 non-English language films. I've seen 96 of them, and although there are duds, of course, overall it's a terrific list. Here's mine, because, why not?

Today I'm thinking, Man those Bohemian Rhapsody reviews are ROUGH. Truthfully, I didn't expect it to be a top contender - Malek might have had an outside shot for a nomination - but I wasn't prepared for all-out savagery with which it's being panned.

You can leave out Tom Courtenay. I sat opposite him and his wife on first class on a train once because they were sitting in my reserved seat. His wife pointed down the carriage and told me there was plenty of room down at the other end for me to sit. Tom just sat there reading his newspaper and didn't look up once like his wife always makes this request. They were sat in my reserved seat...
