Netflix in October: Big Mouth, The Shining, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Time to play Streaming Roulette. Each month, to survey new streaming titles we freeze frame the films at random places with the scroll bar and whatever comes up first, that's what we share!
What does Netflix offer us for free viewing this month? Let's survey...
Well, personally I think teaming up with a Chinese-American was good for the department's image.
The Dead Pool (1988)
Not to be confused with Deadpool. It's Clint Eastwood in his fifth and final Dirty Harry movie, this time paired with Evan C Kim. This line reading is really weird though out of context. I've never seen this but there are lots of stars before they were big: Jim Carrey six years before superstardom, Patricia Clarkson ten years before her critical breakthrough, and Liam Neeson just as he was breaking out. Weirdly even though this movie was a hit it didn't budge the needle on Eastwood's screen partner Evan C Kim's career. He did lots of TV guest spots before it and lots of TV guest spots after it.
How do you like it?
The Shining (1980)
I like it a lot. Everyone does. Why do you ask? (P.S. It still sometimes boggles my mind that Shelley Duvall and the movie were both up for Razzies. She's great in it and the movie is obviously a classic.)
Would you rather never see your family again or have to live with them for the rest of your life?
Truth or Dare (2017)
Not to be confused with Madonna's documentary masterpiece. A friend tried to get me to go see this in theaters and I'm like "have we met? I don't do slasher/gore pics"
[A visual effects moment]
Blade II (2002)
Vampire go boom. I know that I saw this movie but I remember literally nothing about it. Every Blade memory I have beyond Wesley Snipes half-vampire hero is of the original due to Stephen Dorff's villain or the third one due to Parker Posey's villain. I'm sensing a theme here. It's a bit odd that Marvel Studios have had the right back to this character for the past 8 years and don't seem to have any intention of using him even though it was quite a big early hit in the then nascent superhero genre.
Let's make a baby.
Don't tease me.
I wouldn't do that. Not unless you ask.
The Devil's Advocate (1997)
Charlize Theron is going REALLY big in this breakdown scene (until Keanu rescues her from her grief with some good sex... as one does) but she kinda saves the movie from being soulless. And that's not a joke about the deal with the devil (Al Pacino in uncured Ham mode) basics of the plot.
When was the last time you wore a mask? I can see you need to let the wolf out a little.
Hold the Dark (2018)
Uh-oh. Alexander Skarsgård can't possibly be having non-creepy pacifist thoughts at this moment. There's a lot of 'scary' movies on Netflix at the moment but 'tis the season.
And okay...
Cheating a bit here with this next one because it's two screen grabs fused together (a pan down shot of cramped podlike sleeping quarters) plus this series came out in late September.
Night Azumi
Night James
Maniac (2018)
I kinda love this low-fi dystopian Cary Fukunaga series starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. Lots of peculiarly funny ideas and the nonsensical plot is engaging. That said I think Hill is dreadfully dull in it, muted to the point of giving the camera nothing. The standout (at least so far) is Justin Theroux as mad scientist James K Mackelray. So funny!
I wanna discuss it even though I don't wanna write about it so have at it in the comments albeit without spoilers. I'm just halfway through it since I quite binge-watching some time ago (and am much happier for it and enjoying things more!)

One of the greatest evils Emmy ever committed was not handing Maya Rudolph an Emmy (not even a nomination!) for her utterly genius voice work on this series as Hormone Monstress. In fact Emmy just needs to retire that category because year in and year out the nominations show absolutely no interest in actually thinking about what voice work is happening on television, with super long running series like Family Guy and The Simpsons winning each and every year while utterly inspired shows like Bob's Burgers, Archer, and new excitingly funny series like Big Mouth are routinely ignored.

Nat: Well, if every villain has to be adapted from the comics? Daredevil only has four villain concepts in the comics that could theoretically ground an entire season. Kingpin, The Hand, The Owl and Typhoid Mary. (Bullseye can be very fun, but he's an episode villain or henchman, not a season long Big Bad.) Iron Fist S2 kind of removed Typhoid Mary from the table, the MCU's version of The Hand turned out boring and The Owl would need someone to exercise a lot more legwork and create ideas out of whole cloth, because he doesn't ground ANY of the iconic Daredevil stories. A show runner is NEVER going to start with that, and Daredevil has burned through three show runners. So, yeah, basically just Kingpin left. If Erik Oleson does a second season? Maybe we get The Owl, FINALLY, or Typhoid Mary, but if he leaves? It'll either be another Kingpin season or an entirely episodic season with no Big Bad.
if they ever need a big bad for ‘...sabrina’ i hope they cast january jones
I agree with you about Shelley Duvall's performance, but The Shining is terrible and I can't understand why so many people act like it is good.
The best part of Blade Trinity are the moments of Ryan Reynolds and Parker Posey facing off. Would love to see them in something else together.
Agreed about Shelley Duvall - she should've been Oscar-nominated, not Razzie-nominated - and the film is so beguiling. What's it about? Not sure. Lots of things. This is one you feel.
The Dead Pool is quite good! It didn't do well when it came out, but it's worhwhile. As for Patricia Clarkson, she had already been Eliot Ness's wife in The Untouchables. Odd how long it took for her film reputation to soar.
Have you seen the trailer for The Mule? I think Clint has just won the best actor Oscar. At least a nom is coming, but unless he says shit again, the role seems to be great, he's 88 and he's never won best actor in spite of having delivered some great performances (just like Redford, a superstar that became a fine actor).
Blade II rules! It's the best of the three films in terms of its visuals, action, and story all because of Guillermo del Toro.
"Sabrina" looks creepy good
The vitriol thrown Duvall's way for her work in the shining in general continues to baffle. MVP as far as I'm concerned in what is easily the most challenging part. She's devastating in it.
