Soundtracking: 2018 Grammy Nominees at the Movies!
by Chris Feil
The Oscars aren’t the only big movie music prize on the horizon. Last week we got this year’s Grammy nominees and the Grammy voting committee has clearly been spending a lot of time at the movies this year! Aside from the film categories (more on that in a minute...) soundtracks showed up in major categories in a big way thanks to behemoths Black Panther and A Star is Born.
“All the Stars” from Panther and “Shallow” from Star both made it into the Record and Song of the Year categories, in addition to both getting nominated in the genre performance categories. But the biggest movie moment among the nominees has to be Kendrick Lamar’s nomination in Album of the Year for Black Panther’s soundtrack...
Could a soundtrack be benefitting from Grammy expanding their nomination to 8 per category (an unwieldy number and also not consistent in every category *tosses hands in air*)? Nope, Kendrick Lamar is a perennial nominee in the category - this is his fourth and he had to have been very close for last year’s genius DAMN.. Momentum with Grammy nominees doesn’t quite build the way that it does for eventual Oscar wins, so we’ll see if he can finally pull off the win. Another good omen: the last soundtrack to be nominated (O Brother Where Art Thou in 2002) also won.
Let’s take a look at the film categories...

Gaga is going to win Song of the Year because the Grammy's love jerking themselves off to boring Americana-esque songs.
Shallow just needs to win best pop duo to make Cooper a viable EGOT winner. Oscar is coming soon, and he's eventually going back to Broadway in a few years. The Emmy is going to be his last, I think.
I think this may be Sufjan Stevens' first nomination after decades of albums. Sigh.
'A Stranger Things win here would also be similarly homophobic'
This makes no sense. How could awarding Stranger Things in this category be homophobic?!
Black Panther was an awesome action/adventure experience, but obvious points aside, it's literally just a Marvel Universe installment. I remain mystified... Album of the year? Ensemble of the year? As much as I want Miss Bassett to win a SAG, this is just banana pants.
I also don't understand why Stranger Things winning would be considered homophobic?
Do we just look at things exclusively now from the point of view of alleged attacks on race/gender/sexuality? Is the Upside Down a metaphor for being gay that I missed somewhere or...?
I suppose that would explain that horrific SAG Ensemble lineup. I mean, if you're going to nominate diversity, can we at least nominate the greater performances, like those seen in Beale Street or Roma?
I'm thinking it was a tongue-in-cheek way of saying the "Stranger Things" soundtrack has zero queer appeal? I don't know.
Irvin's right, it's become a new flippant meme type comment online. I've seen it used many times just to mean bad, or like in this case, jokingly because it has no queer factor and is seen as less deserving than those with that quality. I thought this newish slang was more widespread, but maybe it's just on sites/comments sections that I've read.
Also, for all the sexy guys dressing up in the 11 from Stranger Things pink dress costume for halloween, it deserves a Grammy...and Oscar...and Nobel Peace Prize.
Lol yes it's just a cheeky word choice. IDK Stranger Things when living in the midwest is a whole other beast of Stranger Things merch and culture that is quite omnipresent and off-putting.
Nice how people just throw out the word homophobic like it’s nothing. This is ridiculous. And the lack of research while writing this is also embarrassing.
The biggest movie moment is Kendrick Lamar’s nomination in Album of the Year for Black Panther’s soundtrack.
