Boston Society (and Other Film Critics Awards)
Monday, December 17, 2018 at 6:35PM After the jump, let's catch up on "The ROMA Show" AKA "what's been going down in regional critics awards" for those who are interested in the infinite amount of groups that do this sort of thing. Winners lists after the jump from Utah, Boston, Dallas, Kansas City, Indiana, Atlanta, and Las Vegas.
Utah Film Critics Association
A refreshingly original take on the best of the year with Roma only winning 3 prizes and not even Best Film. Into the Spider-Verse and Eighth Grade slightly dominated and some cool curveballs like Annihilation for Best Score. Okay then. I'll give it a listen.

Boston Society of Film Critics
The Boston Society of Film Critics has named If Beale Street Could Talk the best film of the year but they were also big fans of Can You Ever Forgive Me? (Actress, Supporting Actor, Screenplay) and Shoplifters (Foreign Film and Ensemble). The BSFC is one of the nation's coolest critics organizations often having interesting choices that don't mirror exactly what all the other awards bodies think each year. This year that iconoclasticism took the form of only one prize for Roma (Cinematography) which at this point is something of a shocker.

One of the longest running critics organizations (formed over 50 years ago!) had a tie for only the fourth time in their history with Roma and The Favourite sharing top honors. They also really liked the Vice actors.

They were huge fans of The Favourite and A Star is Born so we approve... although we can't approve of the category fraud award for Emma Stone considering they're also handing The Favourite Ensemble. Why not just give it Best Ensemble and leave Supporting Actress to an actual, you know, supporting player?

Well said, Bruno. To watch regional critics pretend that Glenn Close didn't give one of the top 5 female performances of the season is just ridiculous.

Overrated: Glenn Close not having a coronation run. Underrated: A Star Is Born not having a coronation run.
She didn't though. But she doesn't need critics prizes, I'd contend.
I love that the awards are all over the place. It will make for a much more fun loving ceremony. I love all the choices. They deserve recognition.
Um...if someone's going to honestly suggest that Elsie Fisher's performance exceeds that of Glenn Close's, well, I may just have to not respond out of courtesy.
Olivia Coleman is taking the Oscar. Can we stop pussyfooting around that fact?
Yay Boston - another Director prize for Lynne Ramsay. In an ideal world...
I speak the truth! Glenn has no narrative. Not a single acor is promoting her because the clear winner for evolution is Lady GaGa!
Lol what critic group didn't vote for Hawke? When was the last time the runaway critic's choice didn't get in?

Also, I love when critics groups award totally unexpected films like The Hate You Give and the Spiderman movie.
Critics awards don’t mean anything.
Rockwell Janney Oldman McDormand took the first televised awards and clean sweeper from there. At this time last year we were watching Dafoe MetCalfe Chalamet take major prizes.
While Hawke, King n Grant r dominating the critics prizes, it's interesting to see tt Queen Olivia n Toni Collette r rather evenly splitting the lion shares o critics wins between them! 😁
I agreed the Critics wins will only push the above mentioned five into possible nom. The critics r not exactly precursors to actual televised wins.
Last yr this time the same pattern had unfolded, Ronan/Hawkins, Chalamet, Metcalf n Dafoe dominated the critics wins n then Golden Globes changes their entire course.
I also feel like Olivia Colman might be the actual BA winner
- The Wife is evidently not getting a Best Picture nomination, and its box office continues to be very humble. Award-giving critics groups don't seem to love this performance.
- I think some academy members are going to be Gaga-resistant; also, Bohemian Rhapsody (mediocre as it is) steals a lot of A Star is Born's thunder.
- Mary Poppins Returns is not as loved by the critics as we were initially led to believe, so probably no Best Pic nomination here either.
I do think Close should win. It'll be utterly embarrassing if she doesn't. But I feel like Colman is the one whose chances are getting stronger by the hour.
Diversity is a good thing. Bravo to the regions. Where is Saint Louis???

So I think 1-4 are in, then 3 out of the 5-8, and maybe 1-2 extra ones pending on if we have 8 or 9 nominees. Or even 7 only, which can happen. I think Bohemian Rhapsody is being underrated in its chances... it can miss but I can see it landing noms for Picture, Actor, both Sound cathegories, Make Up, Production Design, Film Editing and/or Cinematogfaphy... it's wildly loved by audiences, and guilds are closer to audiences than to critics.
@Jesus Alonso: I think that's a smart list. I do get the feeling that Bohemian Rhapsody, though unworthy, will sneak into the BP nominees it's certainly popular enough with audiences). The other filler item I have a hunch will make it in is Vice.
@Yavor: It'd be hard for me to complain if Colman wins. Her performance is outstanding, as is Close's. The same if Collette somehow were to pull out a miracle. But if Lady Gaga beats those ladies, that would be something entirely another.

I can't believe Ethan Hawke was not nominated for SAG or Golden Globes.

A24 needs to start campaigning HARD for Hawke. I fear Washington is going to take his spot for a - let's face it - average performance at best.
@Jesus Alonso I more or less agree with you. While I enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody, I really would like to talk to anyone who puts it at #1 on their list. Well done and entertaining, but filled with clichés and lots of total fabrications.
