President Cinephile?
President Obama (god how we miss him) randomly named his favourite movies of the year today on Instagram. Turns out he's been keeping up with critical recommendations because look at this list which is a nice mix of foreign, docs, indies, Hollywood, and Oscarables!
You can also see his favourite songs of the year on the same post.

As prefabricated as his presidency.
Maaan, I found Annihilation good, but boring and heavy-handed. It lacked the cleverness of Ex Machina to me, I don’t understand the hype.
Him not writing this list is my favorite conspiracy of 2018.
He must be putting off Paddington 2, mistaking it for a kids movie instead of the brilliant movie of the year that it is!
The reason I don't believe the conspiracy about this list is that if some hipster did write it for him, then First Reformed would be on it!
He didn't like "Love, Simon"?!?!? He Hates TEH Gays!!! Dunh dunh DUNH!!!
Having lived in the Middle East for the past 5 years, I don't miss this asshole at all.
To quote Miss Coco Montrese:
Oh, at all!
Lol at some of these comments.
There are really no curveballs on that list, it lines up pretty nicely with the consensus critically acclaimed movies of the year. It would have been interesting to see some left-field choice from him.
MDA -- i mean any list is acclaimed titles is going to line up. but there are several key Oscar hopeful films missing here. No Favourite. No A Star is Born. No Green Book. No Mary Poppins Returns . No First Reformed ... so it's not entirely without personality.
The Death of Stalin and BLINDSPOTTING! Two best comedies of the year, tho Blindspotting is a little less categorical.
My personal #2.
I don’t mind his list. Clearly he sees movies and enjoys them, which is healthy. I really hope The Rider is a surprise best picture nominee.
I love how I skipped right past The Rider, my #3.
Btw, being honest what is left field nowadays? Vox Lux? With the intenet, Netflix and critics awards the way they are, the definition and context of left field is not what some people think it is. The Death of Stalin stands out. Minus my #1, he has the rest of my top 5, which is cool. Also BlackKklansman (#7), tho it's less small...not that it means anything haha.
Seeing The Favorite and Shoplifting next week, probably Roma tonight.
Wow, he's got incredible taste. Can we get George W. Bush's list? I know a lot of people don't like him during his presidency but I feel bad for the man. He just lost his parents this year.
After all, he's not the worst president of the U.S. It's that fuckface who keeps tweeting bullshit.
I love Annihilation
it's undoubtedly one of the best films of 2018
the humanoid scene is breathtaking, groundbreaking, heart-wrenching
reigniting this conversation reminds me that the films which truly stand out are rarely nominated for Best Picture
Looking back, I'm like "The Kings's Speech"? "The Artist"? Are you fucking kidding me?
@Yavor
Kings Speech and Artist and indeed the two worst best pic winners in a long time.
I dont vote for anyone anymore unless I know they loved Burning.
No A Star is Born? I knew he had good taste.
thevoid99 -- Really comforting to know that in your world tweeting bullshit is way worse than lying us to war.
I miss him... :(
So sad to see racist trumptards on this site. President Obama was one of the best ever.
The lying war criminal dubya was the worst until that piece of shit trump.
Can't wait to see trump's favorite films;- Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone and that shit documentatry from Dinesh D'Souza would top his list.
This is a great list, and if people doubt he wrote it they obviously haven't read Dreams of My Father. President Obama is our most cultured president in the modern era. (Also, if you are interested in this sort of thing, check out the list of the films Jackie Kennedy watched in the White House. She was a cinephile, too. Fascinating!)
There's also no Widows, which makes me feel smugly satisfied in my belief that the political stuff in the film all rings false.
"President Obama (god how we miss him) "
The President who during his term was the largest number of deportations of Latin Americans (a record) but as he is "charismatic" and had celebrities by his side nobody cares.
Not defending him but is this actually true? I see this line thrown out a lot but I thought his administration counted turning away people at the border as deportations too, which in that case would definitely inflate his numbers.
Anyway, solid list.
