Claire Foy Goes Positively "Unsane"
By Spencer Coile
In just a few short years, Claire Foy has created an electric resume. After a lauded performance in Wolf Hall, she was cast as Queen Elizabeth in The Crown - leading to heaping amounts of accolades and acclaim. Now that her two season stint as the royal monarch is up, she is ready for exciting film projects.
Unsane, the latest from Steven Soderbergh, feels different from many of his previous films. Shot "in secret" on an iPhone, it tells the story of Sawyer (Claire Foy), a woman who is involuntarily committed to a mental institution where she confronts her stalker face-to-face. Or does she? Is it all in her head?
Watch the trippy trailer after the jump...
Foy is joined by Joshua Leonard, Juno Temple, and Amy Irving - and although the central concept of the film, not to mention being filmed secrectly on his phone, seems odd for a Soderbergh joint - perhaps it isn't altogether a surprising project. On a recent Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session, when asked how to find financing for independent films, Soderbergh offered the sage advice:
Get a script and an iPhone and start shooting. Seriously.
Unsane definitely looks like an intriguing step for both Soderbergh and Foy. The shaky, unfiltered camera work give the trailer an unpolished feel that definitely seems intentional. It also helps to build the fear and paranoia Foy's Sawyer may be experiencing. Then again, it may still be too early to discern whether or not this technical gimmick is effective or not.
Unsane will be released on March 23.

You guys should definitely take a look at Soderbergh directed HBO series MOSAIC...it carries the same feeling, the narrative feels a bit jagged and the Soderbergh-ian tone is typically dry and utterly compelling, he manages to build both a dazzlingly experimental work and a totally conventional murder mystery. Loved it. Plus, the cast is amazing , notably Garrett Hedlund in a very layered performance and Sharon Stone who displays terrific range and depth, holding the screen with effortless charisma, wiith her glamorous, seductive, no-b.s. confidence, her character (Olivia Lake) could easily pass as a not-so-distant cousin of Catherine Tramell.
I like how Soderbergh 'retired' but has been busier than ever. lol
Claire Foy + Steven Soderbergh + unhinged female character = I'm there!
I'm going to see this. It's Soderbergh.
I think she is insanely talented I loved her in The Crown and Breathe.
Soderbergh factor alone makes this must-see + Soderbergh doing horror for the first time + Claire Foy in literally anything (she even half-saved Breathe for crying out loud), so I'm a definite yes. BUT.... that iPhone cinematography looks ugly as fuck. Let's not throw away our film and digital cameras just yet.
Hopefully it's better than SIDE EFFECTS, which this sort of feels like a distance cousin of.
Glenn, Side Effects was certainly a speed bump in my Soderbergh passion, and I'm also hearing that horrid "flat American" accent that Brits do. But the likelihood is I'll pay money opening week.
I haven't yet heard much buzz, but it's my understanding that Claire Foy is starring as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider's Web. Very interesting casting; I adored her as Anne Boleyn...
