JLaw gets the last word
by Nathaniel R
Did you see Jennifer Lawrence's jaw-dropping Versace at the London photocall for Red Sparrow? Apparently when the photo came out social media erupted, articles were written, etcetera (somehow I personally missed this but blink-and-you'll-miss-a-controversy). People were outraged on her behalf about the sexualization of women while the men stay dressed and all that (we've seen a million examples of this happening so it's easy for all the very dumb to spot now). Some of the people who called it out did have a good sense of humor about it -- suggesting that Jeremy Irons wear assless chaps? Hee!
(But, you know, he probably would if you asked him. He hasn't actually been shy about his own beauty onscreen. Look it up.)
Still instant outrage is usually problematic. The world's highest paid female movie star is pissed that people made a big deal of it, writing on her facebook account...
Wow. I don't really know where to get started on this "Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold" controversy. This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended. That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I'm going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice.
This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism. Over-reacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward. It's creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a grip people. Everything you see me wear is my choice. And if I want to be cold THATS MY CHOICE TOO!
I'm with JLaw on this one, though, it should be noted I'm always on the side of movie stars flaunting their insane beauty, male and female alike. Very few movie stars throughout history got there without being gorgeous. If you got it...

If only she could have made her (valid) point without caving to the language of “ridiculous,” “sexist”, “not feminism”, etc. Why can’t we make our points without trashing other people’s? Especially when it comes to deciding what is and is not oppressive... It’s actually interesting that she says she’s offended about other people being offended... so many layers to unpack... as many layers as the men are wearing in London in February! ;)
I am over her. She can wear what she wants, but the whole premise of her movie is sexist (and I don’t think she is a very good actress). Isn’t this her fourth turkey in a row? There are so many other, better actresses who could be promoted instead of the ridiculous singular focus on her.
The culture that says slut-shaming is wrong can't get upset when a woman by choice puts herself out there when the men surrounding her don't. Sophie's Choice bitches -- pick your poison, because you can't die on every hill nor is every battle yours to win if you're trying to win the war.
@SRB-Exactly. I'm waiting for Scar-Jo 3:16 to give her one of these....

There are good arguments on both sides really but.....good god just LOOK AT HER!!
Can humans get any more visually stunning? We should not be deprived of this sight.
(I also do think she's a phenomenal actress.)
Also - for what it's worth - I don't think she's remotely attacking feminism. She's obviously a feminist herself and just protesting against any potential narrowing of the concept.
Agreed with SRB and /3rtful. I also find it interesting how JLaw also whines about feminism and how poor little her was underpaid for AMERICAN HUSTLE (even tho she got the same as Amy Adams who had a much bigger part than her), but constantly blathers on about her sex scenes/nudity to promote her films. On the promo trail for PASSENGERS she constantly mentioned how her sex scene with Chris Pratt was her 'first sex scene' (actually a lie as she had one with Anton Yelchin in LIKE CRAZY and Bradley Cooper in SERENA). For RED SPARROW, she keeps talking about her nude scenes.
If you constantly mention your body, it's not beyond the realms of believability that people will also talk about it. JLaw can wear whatever she wants and say whatever she wants, but it's like, she wants to put a muzzle on people discussing the same issues? She wants her cake and to eat it.
She can wear what she wants
She can freeze if that's her choice
and I'm totally allowed to say that wearing Versace in broad daylight when everyone else is wearing jeans is a fashion disaster
I love her in American Hustle bombshell looks!
QUEEN!
I tweeted about it but just because I was annoyed that Matthias & Joel weren't grabbing each other's asses, basically - she was an afterthought!
She has really found her voice over the last few years and I am so proud of that. It's hard enough growing up in this age of social media and she had to do it in a way no one else can comprehend. I commend her for her outspoken nature and her refusal to be quiet when it seems so many people want her too.
She looks fabulous as well. And while I don't think she is the greatest actress ever, her commitment to her roles is astounding. She really goes all the way.
"It should be noted I'm always on the side of movie stars flaunting their insane beauty, male and female alike. Very few movie stars throughout history got there without being gorgeous."
I am too, but "insane beauty" and "gorgeous" are not words that come to mind when I think I about Jennifer Lawrence. With the proper styling and lighting, she looks like a generically pretty blonde that you see all over the place in LA. That's not an insult, because physical beauty isn't everything, I just don't think she's the world-class beauty the media makes her out to be.
I also don't think she's the great actress the media (and the Academy) says she is. She has no technique, no intelligent core, and her accent work is weak. She has no appreciation for film as an art form; remember when she dismissed silent movies as "boring"?
Her public persona is all about being rude, crass, and vulgar. She became interested in feminism only when it affected her personal paycheck. She also strikes me as incredibly ungrateful for the success she has achieved.
Note to Jennifer: This is the career path you chose. Some level of public scrutiny comes with the territory.
@Lee
Agreed with every word.
Lee, PREACH! Her win in 2013 was such an insult to Emmanuelle Riva.
"She became interested in feminism only when it affected her personal paycheck."
Yeah, so did Lilly Ledbetter. So what? Lawrence's actions have brought more attention to pay disparities than anything any her petty detractors have ever done.
She's there to promote a movie in which she plays a sex Russian spy. OF COURSE she's going to dress the part! And she looks fab and is clearly loving it. If she looked uncomfortable, that would be an issue, but she doesn't. Be outraged that the men didn't dress up to her level, not that she overdressed.
I was distracted by Joel Edgerton on the right. What are we talking about?
There's this new wave of young women who think they're making their own choices, while in fact they're pleasing heteropatriarchy by fitting into all their patterns. A new wave of young women who not only didn't have to fight for anything, obviously, but that in most cases don't seem to have any referents of women who did fight for what (little) women have today, and that unfortunately, don't seem to care enough to be informed. Individual freedom is above everything, I guess. Statements like hers are the reason why feminism is more necessary than ever.
That said I don't get why she usually gets the (intenet) vitriol she usually gets.
Jennifer Lawrence is NOT fitting into heteropatriachy patterns. No matter the motivation, the way she raised her voice for equal pay made a difference.
And I am sorry - not every actor needs technique and good accent work to be great. Sometimes your star wattage is so overwhelming that you can carry a movie and present a character's feelings without disappearing into a part. Hollywood is based on that. You don't ask Bogart to do any accent, but he still was great being Bogart and still managed to tell us everything we need to know about Rick with incredible depth.
Get over it. Jennifer Lawrence is a terrific actress.
My only comment is that I agree she is falling into the traditional use of T&A to promote a movie that is hoping to make money on a promise of T&A. It's great if she is for equal pay, etc., but let's not pretend she is in some kind of noble uniform. All I see is a hooker or a Vegas cocktail waitress, particularly when the men are dressed for winter. The boobs are Playboy, not Ms.
JLaw who?
My eyes was with Matthias and white pants of Joel Edgerton.
She is a gorgeous movie star doing what all great female stars have always done
Yikes this comment thread is as bad as those nasty Facebook and Twitter comments.
