"On Chesil Beach" Trailer Arrives!

Chris here. Oscar wrapups and a lingering winter have us longing for the beach - and look we have one of our favorite nominees to take us there! Except maybe this isn't quite the kind of oceanside relaxation we had in mind: Saoirse Ronan is headlining On Chesil Beach, a drama about a young newlywed couple stuck in the crossfires of sexual expectation and trepidation.
The film is an adaptation of the highly praised Ian McEwan novel, a bit of a full circle moment for the actress, who first came onto everyone's radar with the adaptation of his novel Atonement...
While this one met with a so-so response when it debuted at TIFF, it might be able to reach a better response in the early summer when it's not fighting against other films for adult attention. By the look of the first trailer, it looks to bring another interesting layer to the ongoing Me Too discussion and examine the sexually subserviant role demanded of women.
But we're also clamoring for more Saoirse, no doubt. What advice could Lady Bird offer to ease this virgin's worries? 1) don't be on top your first time, who does that? 2) don't trust everything he says is the truth 3) talk to your mother about it. I'm guessing this first sexual foray will have more dire emotional consequences. On Chesil Beach opens May 18!

She's Oscar worthy in the trailer. Since the Academy will deny her next Sunday S Ronan is on her way to Winslet 2.0 status. I can't wait for what her Reader vehicle will look like.
The Reader was definitely NOT Oscar BA material.
Saiorse looks great. I've read three McEwan novels and found them mildly disappointing, but they made a great movie out of "Atonement", so who knows?

It's interesting to note that Billy Howle is also in "The Seagull" with Ronan, which comes out this May too.

This is one of my all-time favorite books (I read it every year), so i am both super excited and a bit petrified to see how they expand it since it's very short and takes place mostly in a short period of time in the novella.

I look forward to this film. As to the Oscar next year, in addition to this Ronan will have The Seagull and Mary Queen of Scots. I wonder what they'll do and if they'll promote her as Supporting in one of them. Maybe in The Seagull, as it is more of an ensemble piece? And, I'll say it again. Please, anyone, write a film for Ronan and Meryl Streep to star in!
This is by far by favorite Ian McEwan novel. I really hope they get this right because it's "delicate" to say the least.

I absolutely love McEwan! His novels are beautifully written and constructed, but in a non-showy way, and very psychologically perceptive. It's the latter part that can transfer well to movies; "Atonement" was quite good, but nowhere near as good as the novel. I haven't read "On Chesil Beach" (the plot seemed like something I wouldn't find interesting), but maybe I'll read it in prep for this.
I don't think this looks very good. Not surprised it got a tepid response at TIFF--the trailer does not make me want to see it.

In my opinion, the film turned out to be quite good, but I liked the novel much more because it just kept my attention until the very end.
The mood of this book does not seem to me to have a rest because there are quite a few different sad lines that set the reader in a minor way.
