That was a really good conversation. I appreciated the discussion of the new academy members and how they may very possibly be voting more with an eye toward posterity/longevity. Which is how I would vote if I were an academy member. My other takeaway is that yes: Hollywood needs to give Octavia Spencer more challenging roles in the future.

Huge fan of the podcast, and a smack down reader since the Stinky Lulu day’s, but found today’s conversation overly negative. Maybe we’re just at that point of the year, but I was just bummed out to hear people so dismissively talking about really great work by actresses like Laurie Metcalf and Lesley manville.

I disagreed with a lot of what was discussed here (Candice’s disdain for Phantom Thread and Lady Bird hurts), but I really enjoyed the conversation. The idea of Octavia Spencer as Cyril is inspired!

Betty Gabriel was fine - nothing more than that.

I am still stunned at Janney's steamroll this season. Laurie Metcalf's work in Lady Bird is extraordinary--why she's not winning everything can only be explained by Janney's extreme popularity. I just don't get it.

Why invite people to discuss the supporting actresses if they don't like any of the nominees? What a downer.
