"BPM" takes the César

by Nathaniel R

Nahuel Perez Biscayart (pictured in BPM and AU REVOIR LA HAUT) can't get out sick beds!

So much awardage being crammed in before the Oscars. In addition to the Spirits, the French César Awards were just held where, as expected, BPM took six trophies including Best Film and Best Male Newcomer for its terrific leading man, the Argentine born actor Nahuel Pérez Biscayart. BPM apparently had tough competition, though, from Albert Dupontel's Au revoir Là-Haut (the English title will maybe be See You Up There) which also stars Biscayart! He's having quite a year...

Au revoir... won Best Director and four other awards. One has to wonder if that film will be among the possible submission choices at the next Oscars. (Au revoir was released in France after the eligibility cutoff for this current Oscar race, in which BPM was snubbed.)

BEST FILM “BPM,” Robin Campillo
BEST DIRECTOR Albert Dupontel, “Au revoir Là-Haut”
BEST ACTRESS Jeanne Balibar, “Barbara”
BEST ACTOR Swan Arlaud, “Petit Paysan”
BEST FEMALE NEWCOMER Camélia Jordana, “Le Brio”
BEST MALE NEWCOMER Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, “BPM”
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Antoine Reinartz, “BPM”
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Sara Giraudeau, “Petit Paysan”

BEST COSTUMES Mimi Lempicka, “Au Revoir Là-Haut”
BEST SET DECORATION Pierre Quefféléan, “Au Revoir Là-Haut”
BEST ANIMATED FILM “The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales” Benjamin Renner, Patrick Imbert
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY Vincent Mathias, “Au Revoir Là-Haut”
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY Albert Dupontel, Pierre Lemaitre, “Au Revoir Là-Haut”
BEST EDITING Robin Campillo, “BPM”
BEST SOUND Olivier Mauvezin, Nicolas Moreau, Stéphane Thiébaut, “Barbara”
BEST DEBUT FEATURE “Petit Paysan,” Hubert Charuel
BEST DOCUMENTARY “I Am Not Your Negro,” Raoul Peck
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE Arnaud Rebotini, “BPM”
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Robin Campillo, “BPM”
BEST FOREIGN FILM Loveless,” Andrey Zvyagintsev

P.S. Is it a sign for Oscar night that the Russian nominee Loveless took the César against very stiff competition. Also nominated in that foreign film category (foreign for France of course)  were La La Land, Dunkirk, and the arguable frontrunner for the Oscar, The Square

My fellow-Argentine Nahuel Pérez Biscayart starred in two films that amassed a grand total of 26 nominations!

BPM is the best movie of the year. You're just not the same when you leave the theatre.

I'm particulary happy for Antoine Reinartz, a well layered supporting role.

P.S. Arnaud Valois, je t'aime.

What Peggy Sue said. Antoine Reinartz gave probably my favourite supporting male performance of the year and I'm delighted for him and the film. BPM is probably my favourite film of the year, and it's utter flame-out at the box office and with Oscars is the year's biggest disappointment, cinema wise.
