a new fantasy doll set for the collection!

by Nathaniel R

We have a new Red Carpet Lineup to obsess over. And now a visual retrospective of the past eight years of Best Actress & Supporting Actresses on Oscar night...

2017

2016

2015
20142013

20122011

2010

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If these were offered as doll sets or collectible figurines each year I would need a bigger apartment.

... Also I would go bankrupt. (Especially when trying to hunt down 1950, 1973, 1961 and 1939)

If you could afford one of the sets above, which would it be.

* You may notice that's not quite 80 women. There have been two no shows: Judi Dench didn't attend for her nomination for Philomena and Natalie Portman opted out for Jackie due to her pregnancy so that's 78 of the 80 nominees above as they were be-gowned on Oscar night (over the past 8 years).

2015 is probably my favourite line-up but 2013's collection of actresses (including Judi) might still be my favourite! That best actress line-up and those outfits is just pure Hollywood nirvana.

As dolls 2016 is hard to beat. That became my gold-standard as I scrolled through the list. By comparison, 2015 looks dreadfully dull. I would get confused playing with all of the white blonde dolls. With 2016 I could have the Ruth Negga doll be a mysterious woman living in a slightly-too-old-and-weathered (obviously haunted) house who entices passersby with her airy charm. Naomi Harris could be the lawyer who stops by to investigate the disappearances and Emma Stone will show up in the last act as the golden goddess who bore Negga's curse in the 1920s and doomed her to the same life.

2013 would also be fun because Lupita and Cate would be nymph goddesses in the forest (over the water and earth, respectively). Sally is the lost princess who stumbles in and Julia is the villain, obviously.

I think I've also had imaginary fun with the 2011 dolls based on earlier inquiries. In my newest game Viola is a warrior sorceress who teaches Jessica how to balance her conflicting inner impulses: between bringing golden light to the world or giving in to the darkness. Octavia and Berenice are lost party-goers en route who become early casualties of the devious machinations of Glenn, assisted by Rooney, who tries to lead Jessica to the Dark. Glenn's golden sister Meryl comes in to try to lure Jessica the other way. Ultimately, Jessica sacrifices herself and Viola Davis inherits the earth.

So, uh, yeah, 2011 wins.

This has been my longest post in months.

Cumulatively, it might be last year (or 2013) for me, although what I really would like to do is mix and match a set of 10: Helena Bonham Carter and Jennifer Lawrence (2010); Jessica Chastain (2011); Amy Adams and Cate Blanchett (2013); Emma Stone, Meryl Streep and Rosamund Pike (2014); Naomie Harris and Isabelle Huppert (2016). (Or can I sub in Nicole Kidman’s green Gucci from last year’s SAG Awards?!)

Incidentally, Stone’s chartreuse number is probably my favorite; Charlotte Rampling’s dress really has grown on me; Streep has never looked more put together than in 2014; Octavia Spencer consistently looks smashing; and Lawrence has perhaps the most iconic look of the lot (and on her very first outing, no less!).

I would collect for the dresses, so I would pick 2014, because you get Marion, Laura and Julianne all looking beautiful. 2011, which has Streep's famous gold dress and amazing gowns from Chastain and Viola, is a great line-up as well.

Love the pairing of Cate and Rooney, front and center of 2015. :)

Ruth Negga is such a singular beauty. I hope we see more of her on red carpets in the future.
