Red Carpet: Best Actresses Hug It Out

by Nathaniel R

Tonya, Mildred, Lady Bird, Eliza, and Katherine

Beauty! This season's five most celebrated leading actresses have 32 Oscar nominations and 5 statues between them. (Of course Meryl accounts for more than half of both totals but what can you do?). But readers hearts were elsewhere this year...

In the readers poll held this past month on the Best Actress chart, Saoirse Ronan took your Best Actress prize (along with mine), with Sally Hawkins as runner up. Witness:

The poll shows the strength of the category since Streep rarely finds herself in last place. You all love her (well, most of you) and we've been known to celebrate her on occassion!

While Frances' "inclusion rider" education got the most press, this moment when she asked all the female nominees to stand with her was, well, A MOMENT. Awards shows get dinged all the time for industry "back-patting" but why shouldn't talent celebrate talent? It's a thing of beauty to share in each other's gifts.

Meanwhile Frances's win prompted this utterly perfect moment in the Dolby Theatre...

HUG IT OUT WITH THE BEST ACTRESSES! ❤️

Bliss.

I loved the call by Frances for all women nominees to stand up, and the group hug among the other best actress nominees after she won. As for looks, they more or less look fine except I was not crazy about Frances' dress. And as awards season went on and Soairse started losing major awards, her looks and mojo got more and more washed out. Streep looks great in the red (her hair and makeup were flawless), and Sally and Margot also very cute.

Love the hug - but what happened to Saoirse! Her Oscar look was my absolute favourite last year and I thought she was building to something amazing - but no :(

Frances' dress was inspired by the classic curtain get up from the Carol Burnett "Gone With The Wind" spoof

Saorsie is 5th in Fashion but 1st in BA for me,Meryl looked great who knew red would be so her,I like to think it's a nod to Bette Davis,Frances leave the rugs on the floor and stop using them as a dress,Sally Sublime,Robbie is our new Charlize Theron/Sharon Stone Goddess Type.

I liked Saoirse's look very much. Elegant and understated.

Living for Sally Hawkins in Armani Privé.

Funnily enough, her dress reminded me of Izzie's Privé dress last year. And both would be my picks to win!

Streep looked the BEST...

March 6, 2018 | Unregistered Commentergrrr

Oh, come on, Frances doesn't give a crap about the red carpet. She puts on a dress because she has too. Otherwise she'd be there in pajamas, like she was at the Spirit Awards. I love her.

March 6, 2018 | Unregistered Commenteradelutza

The green Calvin Klein number (by Francisco Costa) that Saoirse wore when she was nominated for Brooklyn was aces. I liked the cut of this dress (by Raf Simons, who designed JLaw's gown when she won), but the hue, combined with the light blonde hair, just washed her out. A beautiful gown, to be sure, but not the best look for her...

March 6, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterjrn26

I doubt Streep or Saoirse care about the red carpet either, but they actually try to show some respect for the fact that it's the Oscars and dress for the occasion.

McDormand is like your one coworker who wears flip flops and dirty sweats to the office while the rest of you have the dignity to comply with the business casual dress code. It's not cute.

Important to note here: For the first time in her career, Ronan is now going to considered overdue. So every movie that she makes will have that conversation around it (i.e. Is this the one?) That can sometimes lead to a quick Oscar turnaround.

There was a woman who stood up and looked like an SNL cast member in the middle of a sketch. She looked lost. I cant believe she never made it as a meme.

March 6, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterBD (the real one)

Luv the Sisterly luv!! ♥

Saoirse is a triple threat this yr w 3 high profile pix coming out!

She may pull a double act next Oscars in Best Actress (Mary Queen of Scots / On Chesil Beach) AND Best Supp (The Seagull)!!

March 6, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

Streep always looks like the mother of the bride 👰

March 6, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterAJ

I've noticed, more often than not, that the BA winner's dress usually is gold, white, or silver.

Love, Love L-O-V-E!!! Sally Hawkins dress (Although I think they all look great (Frances included since the dress is so her it works perfectly) ...

March 6, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

Streep looked fine in her red number, but she may never too the gold gown she wore when she won (gag) for The Iron Lady, or (my personal favorite) the totally put-together ensemble for the 2014 Oscars.

Ronan’s dress is a marvel...from behind—that bow!—while Hawkins was giving Crawford/Stanwyck dimensions with those shoulder pads (God bless her). Robbie is a Movie Star, and McDormand is as McDormand does. Thanks be that she didn’t show up in a denim jacket like at the 2011 Tonys!

P.S. the sisters’ circle was so lovely, but has Streep ever no-showed at the Oscars? Might want to consider pulling a Hepburn/Dench/even Portman every once in a while.

March 6, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

Frances's laugh is a little demonic. I like the other available clip with the full intro and speech. I think this will be remembered as a pivotal year and all these movies will have an audience. Please greenlight the film with Streep and Manville as sisters or dueling royal queens directed by Paul Thomas Anderson or Martin Scorsese.

March 6, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterTom Ford

Meryl looks the best out of everyone here. The most interesting thing about Saoirse's dress is the huge bow, but that doesn't fit her very well.

March 6, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterJoey

Mareko - the only time Streep didn't show up when nominated was back min 1991, when she was nominated for Postcards from the Edge. She was pregnant (with her youngest daughter), so she stayed home in Connecticut. Reba McEntire substituted for her and performed onstage the nominated song Streep originated in that film.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterUA

Why on earth would Streep no show? What a load of tosh - she’d be accused of being above it all or too good for it - especially this year. She’s not 8 months pregnant and she’s not 83 and she loves a party and is a goddamned movie star so let’s celebrate that.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMorgan

Good point about Siarnorse one day becoming an 'overdue' nominee.....but there are several other actresses with multiple nominations that have yet to win the Oscar. Glenn Close, Michelle Pfeiffer, Annette Bening and Amy Adams are all deserving of the Oscar. What would happen if one year all 5 actresses are nominated in the same category.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterBette Streep

What happened to José?

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Meryl looks the best of the actress nominees as the fairy godmother from shrek! That is a praise cause she killed it.
I was wishing for Saoirse to win, but totally FINE with Franny. Do you guys remember us getting psyched over 3BB trailer? Guys she won.
Saoirse's fashion is total CHOICES this season. Girl get a new stylist.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterFadhil

That is not the angle of Saoirse. But out of the five nominees she's the one who's most due. Hoping that playing a royal will get it for her.

And the one who wears the gold dress always wins.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterPaolo

Meryl's look is my favorite out of the roster. Sally's gowns always seem to overwhelm her in one way or another. Frances is, well, Frances, so not much else to say there, though I did expect more wow from Robbie and Ronan, which brings me to...

Saoirse has three nominations at 23 -- 23! -- and is obviously on the path to rack up more. I'm not crying for, at least not yet.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Oh so nice this happened. Thanks for posting it. Too bad it wasn't seen on TV.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterJoseph

Oh, and my all-time favourite Saoirse look was the white toga-style gown she wore to the 2016 Golden Globes... stunning! She's never been able to top it, IMO.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterEmma

Hawkins probably wins by default. Meryl looks good but the other 3 look disappointing for various reasons.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

That sisterly nominees hug is beautiful. And Frances -- not my choice -- gave us the best moment of the night. All is right in Actressexualland.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterHustler

Cal -- he has moved on. I know I'm no substitute for fashion writing (i never know who is wearing what label.... i only care how it looks) but we can't not have the fashions posted!

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I fall in love with Sally Hawkins more and more every day.

March 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterBrad

Brad -- it happens so easily with her!
