Mary Poppins Returns Teaser

by Murtada

Self promotion and corporate synergy hit a high on the Oscars telecast Sunday. Disney which owns ABC and is releasing Mary Poppins Returns next Christmas, made sure that the stars of the film were presenters on the show. Not only that but host Jimmy Kimmel mentioned both Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel Miranda in his jokes, and both got invited to that misbegotten visit to nearby screening of another Disney film, A Wrinkle in Time. Finally the film’s first teaser was released during one of the commercial breaks...

The teaser is all about the lead up and the reveal. The iconic leading lady appears in the last couple of seconds. Dressed impeccably and looking at herself in a mirror, Blunt only says a few words as Poppins. The delivery though is salty with a touch of narcissism (you know because a mirror is involved so that must be what they want us to see).  That gives us a clue that the character and performance are going to be different than Julie Andrews’ sweet and legendary take and closer to the later books.

As we all know Andrews won best actress at the 1964 Oscars. So what do we think Blunt’s chances are? Could this be the role that finally nabs her that so far elusive nomination? The media hype certainly started early with a Vanity Fair cover a full year before the movie’s release. Expect her to be everywhere this year. Are you looking forward to this sequel?

Hahahahaha! This looks more ridiculous than the first one which is unbearable. What were people thinking in the '60s nominating it at the Oscars?

Got a feeling of Oscars for Blunt.

I wonder how big Meryl Streep's role is.... Oscar nom #22? lol

March 9, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Wow I had no idea the original Mary Poppins was nominated for 13(!!?!) Oscars! They loved it.

An impossibly charming cast. Too bad it's directed by Rob Marshall.

March 9, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Yes, Rob Marshall and Disney will destroy it like they did with Into The Woods. No Oscar this time for Miranda or Blunt.

Just say NO

Honestly, between this and Christopher Robin, I'm more interested in Christopher Robin. Sorry.

March 9, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

I'm an Oscar doubtful on this one.

Love the story and the cast, but not sure I can take a WHOLE YEAR of Disney marketing on this. I'm super annoyed with Wrinkle in Time's incessant ad campaign, no matter how much I admire Ava DuVernay.

No Oscar hopes unless it's amazing.

I mean, I'll see it. because duh it's a musical.. but I hate the original MARY POPPINS.

Rob Marshall is directing this? OH FUCK.

March 9, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

A good teaser- just leave you wanting more but the original film is going to be a really hard act to follow- not too mention the star power of Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and the perfect supporting cast and that score.

Seems to need to depend on Blunt’s charisma. I could see it totally working if it was daft and funny, with a minimum of sentiment. But any movie with this cast deserves a blessing.

Who the fuck hates Mary Poppins? Like, WHAT!?

March 10, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMorgan.

Isn't this teaser too dark at the begging? I though it was from It 2.

Marshall should’ve saved his talents for a ‘Sunset Boulevard’ film. Disney needs to find new material and stop rehashing all of their classics.

March 10, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterTOM

I agree with Tom- are they planning to turn every animated classic into an inferior live action film

March 10, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterjaragon

Tom & Jaragon: Since they're planning to turn Kim Possible into a live-action movie? Yeah. That about sums it up.

March 10, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

The grouches are out again.
