Cannes Carpet #3: Thandie, Ava, Jane, and lots of Kristen Stewart

by Nathaniel R

Kristen, Laura, Jane, Thandie

We've already gawked at Cannes beauty thrice (Jury Arrival, Red Carpet Collection 1, Red Carpet Lineup 2) and now the final group of 16 delicious gowns before closing night. (And yes we'll eventually get to Cate Blanchett!). Let's start with these four: Kristen Stewart, Laura Harrier, Jane Fonda, and Thandie Newton...

KStew has really been nailing the red carpet, ever more stylish probably because it feels so much like she's more and more herself. This look is from Chanel. Laura Harrier (she's not actually a teenager despite appearances in Spider-Man Homecoming) chose a gorgeous color for  her BlacKkKlansman premiere. Jane Fonda was peacock beautiful in this gown from Greek designer Mary Katrantzou. And Thandie Newton was looking effortless in this eye-catching Valentino.

Aishwarya Rai, Kristen, Diane Kruger, Ava DuVernay

Aishwarya Rai seemed reinvigorating on the red carpet with more range in her looks - this one from Rami Kadi Couture. Choosing Kristen Stewart's best look from Cannes 2018 is next to impossible. But I love this androgynous Chanel Resort suit (of sorts). Diane Kruger, always the fashion plate and last year's Best Actress winner right here at Cannes, wore light blue Armani Privé. And Ava DuVernay sure was memorable in this bold color combo. I think Tom & Lorenzo said it best about her personal style:

She has a preference for slightly boho looks that center modesty as their main trait. She has a basic shape and style that she sticks to, but mixes things up with the use of color and texture and minor variations in design. It’s not a coincidence that all of her looks are practically display pedestals for her spectacular hair.

Jane, Laura, Sofia Boutella, and Kristen yet again

This beaded Valentino look on Jane Fonda is so great. Love the chunky flowers. Laura Harrier (again) is wearing a baby blue gown from The Row. Atomic Blonde's Algerian beauty Sofia Boutella isn't getting married but she is wearing Vera Wang Bridal. (I personally hate it when gorgeous brunettes go blondeish -- the cinema has way too many blondes already! -- and darker hair would have made this odd color combo pop). And KStew just showing off at this point, really... but silvers and blacks are always a great choice for her. Any outfit that reminds us of that scene where she tries on the designer dress in Personal Shopper we're here for.

Elizabeth Debicki, Thandie again, Chloe Sevigny, and Stacy Martin

Elizabeth Debicki, who should be a much bigger star, in Valentino Haute Couture. Thandie Newton gets sassy/pointed in this Vivienne Westwood Couture gown which we've heard on Twitter features all of the black characters from Star Wars films though we haven't seen enough photos from all angles to verify this. Or maybe that's a joke because there are so few? I'm seeing a lot of repeats of Finn but wear is Mace Windu? Ever fashionable Chloe Sevigny -- love the shape on this Chanel I believe (?). I'm not sure why Nymphomaniac's Stacy Martin was at Cannes but she looks lovely and demure in this Dior.

Which is your favorite of these 16 looks?

Kristen Stewart definitely brought it this year. I like what Sofia, Jane, Diane, Laura Harrier, and Elizabeth Debicki wore.

And Cannes to make another rule for the festival. Ban reality TV stars from the festival. I heard one of those ugly bitches from Teen Mom was there and chose not to wear underwear as she just flaunted her ugly-ass pussy. I nearly went blind.

Stacy Martin plays the lead in Treat Me Like Fire, in Directors' Fortnight. It's a 70's gambling crime drama.

I don’t like Jane Fonda

I love Ava's outfit. It may not be the most stylish (see KStew, Jane Fonda, Laura Harrier) but I still love it. It is a unique and consistent style, and what it draws attention to is her face, and by extension, her talent.

kstew's fashion transformation is nothing short of inspiring. I've seen her on the red carpet since she was a gawky teen going through different style phases, swinging between fashion dont's pre-Twilight and uber-femiine looks during the Twilight years that clearly reflected her struggle to reconcile public image and self-comfort. These days, her style is so wildly personal, specific, and beautifully overlapping the haute, casual, androgynous, and feminine. It's very similar to my own wardrobe struggles coming into my own, so I always get a kick out of seeing her kill it
