Why did no one tell us about "Harlots"?

There's so much TV these days and so many streaming channel options that it's easy to miss all sorts of juicy series. Case in point: Hulu's "Harlots" which pits Oscar-nominated geniuses Lesley Manville and Samantha Morton against each other as brothel madames at war in late 18th century London.

I can practically hear Glenn Close whispering "war" in Dangerous Liaisons voice, while looking at this standoff in episode 2 of "Harlots"

Show of hands: Who has seen this? Season 2 premieres in July but we're just now catching up with Season 1. If enough of you are watching perhaps we'll cover it? It's far from perfect. The anachronistic score is driving me nuts. Not because it's anachronistic but because it's loud and desperate to make it's "I'm anachronistic!" point. And the series can't always decide if it's pure camp or serious drama -- even Manville and Morton have misplaced their subtlety (!) --  but there's just so much actressing.

MANVILLE vs. MORTON? I can definitely go 8 rounds with this for Season 1.

Yes! I watched it last year - when she was promoting The Beguiled, Kiki Dunst mentioned it as the last show she had binge-watched. And, you know, Samantha Morton.

Morton, best actress of this universe

Hand up. Lesley Manville is sublime. Morton is fab.

Oh, Nathaniel--there is SO MUCH freaking good TV right now, and much of it not American. I wish I could find a site like yours for TV, but it just doesn't exist. Yours is one-of-a-kind.

Didn't know this existed.

How did I not know about this? Also, is anyone here watching Schitt’s Creek? It’s such a gem. Catherine O’Hara is devine in it.

"I wish I could find a site like yours for TV, but it just doesn't exist."

ABSOLUTELY.

I had no idea Manville was in this, I will definitely watch it now.

I love it. It’s messy, it’s naughty, it’s glitsy, it’s trashy, it’s a lovely way to spend an hour on a summer evening.

It's totally addictive. And what about the walls? It has the best naked walls since King's Speech.

Marek - *raises hand when it comes to both Harlots and Schitt's Creek*

I LOVE Morton to death and have heard she’s fantastic in this.

Should watch it! I’d be up to reading reviews about her greatness though.

Manville is ferocious as Lydia. Who can blame her for chewing all the scenery when it looks so sumptuous.

I will have to look into this - I should already know about this and have a copy.
Co-sign Marek and Joey's shout out about Schitt's Creek and Catherine O'Hara.
She is doing her best work - she's playing a great character and should be getting emmy noms for this.
