Welcome the Academy's Class of 2018!

Chris here. It's that time of year again for Oscar to welcome its new members into the fold. And the class of 2018 is the largest batch of inductees ever: 928, ahead of last year's previous record of 774. Among the names you will find last year's nominees like Daniel Kaluuya, Timothée Chalamet, and The Big Sick's creative duo Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, as well as beloved folks awaiting that first nomination like Melanie Lynskey, Sean Baker, and Ann Dowd.

These invitees (remember, some people do decline to join) show further attempt to diversify the ranks of the Academy across all categories. Should all accept, the Academy membership for women and people of color will both increase towards last year's goal to double both by 2020. One exciting stat is that 9 branches feature more female invitees than male, including actors, documentary, and producers.

The full list is after the jump, so do share the names you are most excited to see! Here's the cast of Big Little Lies adorably celebrating Zoë Kravitz's invitation to kick off the excitement (but there's tons more adorable well-wishing on The Academy's Twitter page):

A LOT of Almodovar's regulars <3

June 25, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterTheBoyFromBrazil

This was a huge mix of "Oh it's so cool to see XX!" and "What do you MEAN XX wasn't already a member???". But they're here now, and that's what matters.

June 25, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterNick T

How on earth were Celia Imrie and Eileen Atkins not members yet? Also hey Penelope Wilton!

June 25, 2018 | Unregistered Commentermorganb

Close your eyes, scroll down and create a movie by where your finger lands. I've got Zoe Kazan and Lea Seydoux starring in a Ruben Ostlund film edited by Elena Ruiz and written by Christian Petzold. It's fun to think about the possibilities, and also unlikely because Ostlund writes his own films. Sometimes I wish the Academy would fund projects like this. I'd take it over another Transformers/Terminator/Pirates movie.

This enormous list is also a really great reminder of phenomenal talents that somehow had never been invited to the Academy. And do you think Zoe Kravitz's BLL castmates suggested/nominated her? (I do.)

June 25, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterCash

Interesting the Academy of Oscars worried and terrified of the public opinion/wrath of the web and the politicians - of all sides - don't giving a damn.

June 25, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterThoren Eslope Jr

I've searched this long list dozens of times to ensure I'm not missing something, but I do not see Zoë Kravitz's name anywhere to be found. Was she actually invited? I see Zoe Kazan's name, but...

June 25, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterJesse T

Laurie Metcalf is not on the list. I hope this means she is already a member.

Music
Lisa Coleman – “Valentino’s Ghost,” “Dangerous Minds”
Wendy Melvoin – “Just Wright,” “Soul Food”

Everybody talks about the actors, but the Academy's music branch is having a mini-Revolution.

Vanessa Bell Calloway! Rossy De Palma! Melonie Diaz! Julianne Nicholson! Yaaaaas.

How is it that previous Oscar nominees such as Abigail Breslin and Quvenzhané Wallis aren’t already members, but the likes of Amy Schumer and Tiffany Haddish are?

Hmm...

How is it that previous Oscar nominees such as Abigail Breslin and Quvenzhané Wallis aren’t already members, but the likes of Amy Schumer and Tiffany Haddish are?

Probably age. They were children when they were nominated. The same happened with Keisha Castle-Hughes and Hailee Steinfeld.

BREVITY -- great point!

CASH -brilliant. I'm gonna try it right now. I get...

UNTITLED FILM directed by Andy Muschietti and starring Daisy Ridley, Jena Malone and tthe great Daniel Giménez Cacho with a score by Kendrick Lamar. Ooooh and it's shot by Máté Herbai (who did such phenomenal work on the Hungarian nominee ON BODY AND SOUL last year.

A very diverse batch indeed. Can they vote again so they can give something to Lady Bird?

June 26, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Jeunet, Carmen and Rossy are not members already? How is that even possible? Sometimes I really hate the Academy.

June 26, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

I am so thrilled that two Indigenous Australians (Rachel Perkins and Warwick Thornton) have been invited to join!

June 26, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterEz

It's evident that the success of Girls Trip is almost singlehandedly responsible for the invitations extended to Haddish, Hall, Pinkett Smith, and Tate, but considering that that latter three have been doing consistent work for the last 20-30 years, I don't mind at all.

June 26, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Eight cast and crew members from The Handmaiden!!!! Here's to hoping the Academy starts to pay Asian cinema even a FRACTION of the attention that they give to western European cinema.

June 26, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterDiego

"Audra McDonald – “Beauty and the Beast,” “Ricki and the Flash”" may be the wildest discrepancy between credited titles and actual talent.

How strange that Rachel Perkins got into the directors branch. Her films, while usually doing very well at home, never travel overseas. I know BRAN NUE DAE came out, but other than that... oh well, cool. Great to see Bonnie Elliott in the cinematography branch. A really great up-and-coming Australian female cinematographer. And Warwick Thornton! Who, while know predominantly as a directly, has been a cinematography for longer and done more projects in that role so it makes sense the branch would choose to honour him.

I truly wish they released individual ballots sometimes. Like, maybe they can be put in an archive and released after 25 years? I mean, who doesn't want to know what Bela Tarr is voting for, you know?!

June 26, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

Here's to hoping the Academy starts to pay Asian cinema even a FRACTION of the attention that they give to western European cinema.

They won't. European performers and creators are people they're willing to collaborate with.

You have to imagine the reasoning behind some of these. There's clearly a "if it can happen to Allison Janney" it can happen to you contingent, i.e. Jean Smart, Christine Baranski, Julie Kavner.

Yes, you're a huge star somewhere, but we just discovered your country on a map: Andy Lau, Carmen Maura, Shah Rukh Khan.

If Daphne Zuniga is a member, you surely should be too: Jennifer Grey, Liv Tyler, Jada Pinkett Smith.

And we're embarrassed that we've given you nothing to do, but we love your taste: Audra McDonald, Irene Bedard, Naveen Andrews.

I wonder who nominated almost the entire cast of The Simpsons for membership?

June 26, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterVince

CharlieG

Sometimes the invitees rejected the prior invitation. Ex: Sean Penn was invited again when he rejected previously the invitation.

June 26, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterLeon

//I wonder who nominated almost the entire cast of The Simpsons for membership?// I'm wondering about that too. First off, I'm surprised Julie Kavner, Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer weren't already members since they have had rather prolific film careers. If you were going to also invite Yeardley Smith alongside them, why didn't you extend an invitation to Dan Castellaneta as well?

June 26, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterIrvin

Jesse T- YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! Her name isn't on the list! A little sleuthing uncovers that Zoe Kravitz was actually part of the 2017 invitees! http://ew.com/movies/2017/06/28/academy-invites-class-of-2017/ Crazy, aye? I don't know why they are pretending she is one of the new invites, though I can't decipher what Laura Dern is saying to her in the video.
