If any other actor had been cast as the Joker, I would agree it is ill-advised. But Phoenix can do anything, and he's a better actor than Heath Ledger. Jared Leto on the other hand...

I watched THE LEISURE SEEKER from Redbox this weekend and wow, Donald Sutherland was amazing playing an Alzheimer's stricken husband to Helen Mirren. He is always so good!

It's amazing that they considered Gwyneth Paltrow for Jeanine Garofalo's part in Reality Bites. I can't imagine that movie would be nearly as good.

Why are you calling The stand-alone Joker movie ill-advised?
I think it pretty sounds exciting and I have had major superhero fatique for the past 10 years!

Todd Phillips is a little worrisome - his film track-record is not the best.
But I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Plus Phoenix is one of the most interesting actors of his generation - better than Ledger (even though his Joker is the one to beat) and Leto - can't wait to see Phoenix' take on the role.

Plus De Niro and the ever lovely Zazie Beetz.

I'm cautiously optimistic

OMG! Golden Girls Action figures!
Wow, just wow. *lol*
Especially Sophia looks spot on.

Suzanne: That part in Reality Bites is such a stock best friend part that it's easy to imagine a lot of interpretations. I kind of think Paltrow or Posey would have been terrific, but wildly different, and the whole movie would change, since so much of its tone comes from the Garofalo-Ryder dynamic. I'm so happy Vickie gets to be a Janeane Garofalo character.

I saw Belinda Carlisle perform at PrideFest here in Chicago this summer, and she was utterly charming and beguiling. That voice can really get to you. I've been listening to my Go-Go's station on Pandora for the last month. The Vacation album is an all-timer.

Donald Sutherland is a god. I'll never get over his snub for Ordinary People. Sigh.

That Joker film might not be a dud at all considering it's Phoenix and now Conroy and De Niro. Either way it's interesting.

I really like that piece on BPM and Queer as Folk as well. BPM was by far my favorite film from last year and those dance scenes have really stuck with me. I found them so moving for some reason, the ending in particular. As the credits rolled I sat in the theater crying, happy and sad, thinking of all the times I've been out dancing with friends and how, even when there's awful stuff going on in the world, it's such a freeing experience for me. It makes me proud to be a part of the LGBT community.

Sutton needs to quit Younger. 5 seasons are enough.

I like to think Im an open-minded person, especially when it comes to film, but I cant stand recasts. Its jarring and I often struggle to not let it take me out of the movie. I still forget sometimes that Terrence Howard isnt Rhodey in the MCU anymore, and I scoff at the multiple recasts of “The Mountain” character on GoT (goddamit, The current one is literally twice as wide as the other two!). It hurts continuity on a subtle but incredibly noticeable level. Having two different actors portray the Joker at once is just...I dont know how to deal with that. Im sure Joaquin will be superior to Leto as Leto is just doing a riff on Heath’s performance which I dont think Joaquin would ever do. But still :/.

The Donald Sutherland article mentions that both Sutherland and Christopher Plummer played J. Paul Getty in the two latest versions.

Sutherland and Plummer know each other of course. In a tv version of Hamlet many years ago, Plummer played Hamlet, Sutherland played Fortinbras, and Michael Caine played Horacio.

When Sutherland got a big break with a supporting role in "The Dirty Dozen", he was broke in London and didn't know how he'd get to California to play the part. His wife said, "Why don't you ask Chris?"

So Sutherland called Plummer where Plummer was working at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and Plummer sent him the money to get to California. Because he was in California, Sutherland was able to audition for Robert Altman's M*A*S*H, another big break.

A probable reason why Sutherland was never nominated for anything is his political stance. He was an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War, alienating some people forever, probably including many Academy voters. He continued to be critical of American right wing politics, and they continued to not give him anything.

I’m confused; are Leto *and* Phoenix going to play the same character in different movies simultaneously within one DC cinematic universe? Because, if so, that makes zero sense.
