Beauty Break: "Crazy Rich Asians" Covers THR

Chris here. While August is usually a slow winding down of the summer movie season into unfortunateness, one of this summer's most anticipated is still to come: hit lit adaptation Crazy Rich Asians! We fans of Kevin Kwan's extended family book series already know why you should be very excited about this Jane Austen-esque delight, but allow me to quickly illuminate you what's in store: an ever rare romantic comedy, set in the glamorous and opulent lifestyle of the filthy rich, and most crucially, the first American studio film led by an Asian American cast in decades.

The film is currently sitting poolside on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter, which gives us a moment to luxuriate in its gloriousness...

My money is on Constance Wu exploding in a big way once the film opens. Audiences mostly know her from Fresh Off the Boat (which just reached syndication, congrats!), but she is perfectly suited for romantic leading roles such as Crazy's Rachel Chu, awkwardly unaware that her boyfriend comes from serious money when she meets the whole family.

Remember the "hot directors" meme from awhile back (honestly, who could forget)? Well, take a second to revise that list with Crazy's Jon M. Chu (left) at the top. But he's strictly behind the camera, so we'll have to "settle" for love interest Henry Golding (right). We accept this arrangement.

What is luxury without a queen? You guys, get ready for Michelle Yeoh to give us the full Miranda Priestly experience as the family matriarch who will have none of Rachel. Michelle in costumes, Michelle in jewelry, Michelle turning us unworthy mortals to dust with just a look! Look, I even watched Star Trek: Discovery just for her alone, so I am pleased to see her back in a major role! We deserve more Michelle Yeoh photoshoots, so let's get this franchise started already.

Crazy Rich Asians opens in two short weeks on August 15th!!

You all remember that time that we could had the four leading characters of Crouching Tigger Hidden Dragon and the two leading actors of In The Mood For Love deserved to be nominate for the Oscar on the same year? I think was the same year because Wong Kar-Wai and Ang Lee let Cannes speechless with this to movies on the same year.

Should be and deserved to be historical!!

What a great time!!

And I can't wait for Crazy Rich Asians kick ass the box office!

This film will suck. I don't trust a film directed by some asshole who conned a bunch of fans of a cartoon show who expressed their love for the show to be used for one of the worst films ever made in Jem & the Holograms.

This isn’t the first all Asian-American cast for a film. The first was Flower Drum Song in 1961.

Gorgeous photos. And yes, Yeoh is a goddess. So glad she's a part of this.

I admit I'm nervous. I read the whole series last summer and had a great time with it, despite (or because of?) all the ridiculousness, but a multi million dollar movie is another thing entirely. I really, really hope this opens well and makes lots of money overseas so that the series will continue.

I think it'll do moderately okay domestically and will most likely do a slightly better overseas to see it as a success.

I feel like projects with Asian cast-led projects are sitting on the side of decisionmakers desk right now seeing how this film does before throwing it to the trash or streamlining to production.

I really sincerely hope it's the latter. I'll be there opening weekend fo sho.
