The Miracle Worker was on so often back in the 60's and 70's, along with To Kill a Mockingbird.
It was a staple of Saturday or Sunday afternoon movies on TV.
Anne Bancroft facing off against the willful Patty Duke. It's a great film.
Has anyone under the age of 45 seen it? It's worth seeing if you haven't.
Directed by Arthur Penn, who later did Bonnie & Clyde.

Was this the "Wakanda forever" of the 60's?

I saw it for the first time in my early twenties and was completely floored by it. Incredible performances by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke and an all around wonderful film.
I second Edith. If you haven't seen it definitely seek it out.

THIS IS MY RELIGION

LadyEdith -- I have (!) but I'm an Anne Bancroft devotee so I guess I don't count

Peggy Sue and Eddy - I'm glad to hear that you have seen this classic and love it it as much as I do.

Anne Bancroft forever. Four of the greatest performances ever--TMW, The Pumpkin Eater, The Graduate, The Turning Point. She should have also won the Oscar for The Graduate.

(For seeing the value of her The Turning Point performance/nomination ) Condragulations brookesboy, you are the winner of this week’s challenge..

Thank you, Kirk. I see her work in TTP as incredibly sensitive, warm and heartbreaking. Anne crushes our souls and immediately lifts them up. The scene in the opera is the best. I love her when Leslie is drunk. Absolutely fantastic work from Anne. She's the boss!

I hate to be the naysayers, but I find the hysterical pitch at which Penn directs his actors (be it here or in Bonnie & Clyde) exhausting.

Great pic but.. don't remind us of Agnes of God. Jane and Anne's worst performance.

It's interesting that people keep referencing the 1962 movie version of The Miracle Worker, but this poster is actually of the 1959 Broadway version that preceded it. (Walter Kerr was the theater critic for the New York Herald Tribune.) Both the play and the film starred Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, directed by Arthur Penn. In fact, this photo is probably from 1959 or '60, when Jane Fonda was 21 or 22.

Mareko. You repeated yourself.

A repeated comment happens to most of us at some point Joanna. Internet etiquette is not to mention it. Unless it’s some inside joke between the both of you, if so, carry on. :)

I luv Page in Sweet Bird of Youth. But Bancroft does indeed deserve both the Tony n the Oscar for The Miracle Worker!

Patty Duke too! Althot she wasn't even Tony-nominated.
