The Damned is really something. Even if you're not really into Visconti, it's worth seeing for what he does with The Night of the Long Knives - one of the oddest, but most memorable sequences in a film that I can think of.
If you think the Academy has been unkind to Glenn Close, take a look at her precursor record.
She's received one BAFTA nomination to her six Oscar nods. The HFPA ignored four of her six Oscar-nominated performances. Never honored by NYFCC; LAFCA, NSFC and NBR haven't noticed her since The World According to Garp in 1982. BFCA passed on Albert Nobbs but gave the film a makeup nod.
In a way, the AMPAS has been more appreciative of her work than any other film body. I guess that raises a couple of questions: Can she generate the heat she needs out of the gate? And even if she doesn't, could she be a threat to win even if the precursors go elsewhere? Probably yes to both.
Oh, great. I think you guys should take the academy's advice though, and go for three hours. The longer the better!
i just watched TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT again at the weekend - always enjoyable little romp.
With all the talk of Close what about the undervalued Pryce,I haven't seen the film is he co lead or supporting,is there a chance he could sneak in either category.
Nick and Nathaniel, you are gonna really enjoy MADELINE'S MADELINE. Molly Parker is also astounding in it.
You should all see LOVE AFTER LOVE, a well received movie from earlier from the year that seems up all 3 of your alleys.

I have such a hard time seeing Close win for The Wife. I just can't imagine people having the same passion for it as say Backseat, A Star Is Born, The Favourite or Widows.
Price will probably be overshadowed (sight unseen and not reading enough passion in reviews) ala Pinsent, Trintingnant, Courtenay...
olivar -- yeah, he's not special enough in the role. It's definitely the Glenn Close show. If anything I think Christian Slater would have an easier time in supporting than Pryce... but it's only going to be her.
