Prime in August: The Elephant Man, How to Talk to Girls at Parties

Time to play Streaming Roulette. Each month, to survey new streaming titles we freeze frame the films at random places with the scroll bar and whatever comes up first, that's what we share!

Eat me alive. Mommy, mommy 🎵

How to Talk to Girls at Parties (2017/18)
We should talk about this movie at some point real soon now that you can all see it. L-O-V-E this entire scene. My favorite in the movie though these screen pulls are random as promised. I want this nominated for Best Original Song though it never shall come to pass...

Please! Get me a drink

The Glass Castle (2017)
It should definitely be more exciting to see Woody tied to bed posts.

But nothing is exciting about this movie, alas... I wonder what went wrong because the director and actors are all talented.

If you could see yourself, you could see that we look stupid!

All I See Is You (2018)
Blake Lively stars in a thriller about a blind woman. I have no idea why the visuals are so weird in this scene. Jason Clarke is shaming her about her joyful dancing at this moment.

I care about you. I really do.

American Gigolo (1980)
I mean you believe that Richard-Gere-at-peak-hotness face, right? He is, after all, a professional actor paid to fake feelings playing a 'professional' paid to fake feelings. But in this scene, we're meant to see them as real ones, if memory serves.

No, let's go into the city!

The Time Machine (2002)
Guy Pearce is a weird lead actor right? LA Confidential excepted, something about him is too weirdly intense for leading roles. And not the star magnetism kind of weirdly intense, like oh Tom Cruise, or somesuch. Remember when this was nominated against Frida for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and they were the only two nominees? When will the Academy ever fix that category and make it like all  the others?

-WHORE! LIAR! THIEF!
-YES, YES, YES

Original Sin (2001)
The acting in this scene is very... purple. Sadly, I think this is supposed to be a romantic drama but in this scene Antonio Banderas is slapping, strangling, shaking, and threatening Angelina Jolie with a gun until he shouts "DON'T YOU SEE HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU?"  Icky. ick. ick. Cut to: next morning, they wake up serenely in bed. Sexual politics, problematic: code red.

-I understand that you've been flogged
-I feel much better now.

The Elephant Man (1980)
Somehow we've never discussed this movie despite its 8 Oscar nominations.

Funny you bring up The Elephant Man — I just saw it mentioned in this intriguing study on ableism in film casting: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HK1KLVPipmY&list=PLhbv_wRrdM4sv6qvxGXydjro7HfltsD1x&index=1

TEM gets several minutes of focus in the second half.

Pearce is one of many uncharasmatic Lead Actors to get plum roles and that's why we should all appreciate Pitt,Cruise,Costner,DiCaprio and the like, they are or were Big Movie Stars for a reason.

Original Sin was 1 of many Jolie movies were her lack of acting skill shows and whatever happened to Banderas,he now appears in cookie cutter action flicks that never see a cinema.

A brave soul needs to piggyback the current Academy rule changes controversy to attempt to remedy the Makeup and Hairstyling travesty. Work those rolodexes, etc.

"All I see is You" is underrated. I swear it's like the "Rust & Bone" of movies that got dumped in Redbox kiosks.

I also remember howling with laughter at "Original Sin", which is like an old school, Liz Taylor style camp classic. I think I remember a scene where someone says "I just killed a man" and Jolie gets to respond "...and I just bought a new hat, but you don't hear me going on and on about it."

Guy Pearce works in the right environment. The Rover, Animal Kingdom, Lockout, Memento, LA Confidential - all fantastic.

He has to play a certain type of weird. It seems like he would work in a sexual thriller. Like a 1980's Michael Douglas.

We definitely need to talk about 'How to Talk to Girls at Parties'.

It doesn't quite work but it's spectular in many ways, and their duet scene above with all it's trippy visuals and earnest lyrics is pure electricity.

At this point, in spite of it's flaws I can't imagine it not making my top ten of the year.

"The Elephant Man" is amazing with that stunning black and white photography. George Pal's " The Time Machine" (1960) is better than the remake

Was Pierce not good in Memento? I saw it so long ago that I don't remember specifics about his performance but I remember liking it at the time.
