Who will win the Emmy for Comedy and Drama Series?

Happy Emmy Day, everyone! It’s been fun dissecting some of the major categories leading up to this fateful evening, where we will finally see who is awarded. Both the Comedy and Drama Series races are some of the most exciting in years. Seriously, it’s been eight years since something aside from Modern Family or Veep has won Best Comedy Series, so anything that wins this year will be a relief. So let’s speculate on who will take the top prizes of Emmy night...

Best Comedy Series Nominees:
- Atlanta (FX, Season 2)
- Barry (HBO, Season 1)
- Black-ish (ABC, Season 4)
- Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO, Season 9)
- GLOW (Netflix, Season 1)
- The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime, Season 1)
- Silicon Valley (HBO, Season 5)
- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix, Season 4)
Will Win: When you break it down, this seems like a close race between Atlanta and Mrs. Maisel. Both have won their fair share of Creative Arts Emmy’s already, although you could make the case that Maisel has the upper-hand after taking home Best Casting for a Comedy Series. And when you consider that they could split the Directing and Writing categories, not to mention Lead Actor and Actress, it feels especially tough to call. I’ll give the edge to Atlanta – it feels especially timely and followed up its first season with even more rewarding absurdism.
Should Win: I was truly swept up by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. From Brosnahan’s delectable performance, to the sharp writing, to the lush visuals, it had me buzzing for a second season immediately after finishing the first.
Could Spoil: No other show in this category has the clout of the two frontrunners. Anything else winning would be a huge (but welcome) surprise.

- The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu, Season 2)

- This Is Us (NBC, Season 2)
- Westworld (HBO, Season 2)
Will Win: This might be more challenging. The Crown took home Best Casting for a Drama Series, Game of Thrones can never be counted out, and people are still talking about The Handmaid’s Tale (although the effusive love for it seems to have dwindled a bit from the first season to the second). Still, its prominence with nominations in both Writing and Directing, not to mention its eight acting nominations (and a win for Samira Wiley already) seems to have propelled The Handmaid’s Tale to a series win for the second year in a row.
Should Win: After recapping both the Actor and Actress in a Drama Series categories recently, it should come as no surprise that I will say the worthiest winner would be The Americans for its stunning final season.
Could Spoil: This Is Us did win the Best Ensemble SAG this year. Although it underperformed in the acting races, is it still an underdog to take the top prize?

I'm with you on The Americans. It needs to win big tonight, especially prizes for its two leads.

I have no idea. I think there are no front-runners and that's exciting.
My favorite in Comedy is Barry and I loved Game of Thrones. It was frantic. They cut all the bullshit and focused on what they do best: killing characters in an iconic way.
The Americans deserves to win, but I'm not holding my breath.
It's insane that over six seasons, it never got a SINGLE nomination in a tech category (apart from title credits in season 1). How do you appreciate the lead actors without recognizing the hair/makeup, costumes, art direction, cinematography, editing, sound, and so on? That show has never slouched at technical achievement.
If Emmy loved enough to give it Best Drama Series, it would have 10+ nominations—not the measly four or five they've given it since 2016.
Peggy Sue: No front runners in Comedy, such that every show COULD win. Drama, I'd still say Handmaid's is PROBABLY the front runner, but four other shows COULD easily take it.
I'd say the odds for drama are:
1. The Handmaid's Tale
2. The Americans
3. Stranger Things
4. This is Us
5. The Crown
6. Game of Thrones (The people who are into it still are REALLY into it, but the people who aren't REALLY aren't.)
7. Westworld
And for comedy:
1. Black-ish
2. Atlanta
3. The Marvellous Ms. Maisel (I wouldn't put TOO much stock in that Casting win. Its a first season after all and the casting category absolutely SHOULD be weighted toward first seasons.)
4. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
5. Silicon Valley (more as a "thank you for dumping T.J. Miller", but not inconceivable)
6. GLOW
7. Barry
8. Curb Your Enthusiasm (If it was going to ever win? Season 6 (against 30 Rock Win 2, the bro-iest show ever made, The Office Season 4 and one of Emmy's embarrassing embraces of Chuck Lorre) or 8 (against Modern Family Win 3, another embarrassing embrace of Chuck Lorre, Girls (did anyone think that was ever going to win?), 30 Rock Season 6 and Veep Season 1) were the best shots it had, both of which being fields where it was probably 2nd or 3rd, as opposed to the usual last place it had in every other field it was in.)
The Emmys are the worst at rewarding the same show year after year. (See Parks & Rec with NOTHING except nominations over 7 seasons of pure joy.)

I HOPE Keri Russell takes BA; so well deserved. My second choice would be Sandra Oh. However, Jodie Comer is definitely the MVP of Killing Eve and should have been nominated too.
I want The Americans to win in honor of all its terrific actors, characters and performances we've loved all these years, from earthshattering one night stands (Lois Smith) to marvelous long running and understated supporting turns (Langella, Martindale), to heartbreaking moments when characters we've loved were taken away from us (Derek Luke, the astonishing Annet Mahendru), and, specially to the one and only Alison Wright, whose searing performance in the two last episodes before her Martha goes to Moscow ranks very high in the my list of the best moments of an actor in the history of television. And to the leads, obviously, but I still hope they can win.
