Guild Nominations En Masse!

Today is a big day. It's Globe fallout day but also the day when the guilds start announcing en masse. Today we heard from the writers, the editors, and the art directors guilds to give us more clues as to which films the industry is gaga for. The only films that scored at all three guilds were A Star is Born and Roma, which NOT COINCIDENTALLY feel like the two most likely films to win Best Picture on Oscar night, give or take Black Panther.

The Writers Guild nominations rarely line up exactly with Oscar because the guild rules are such that several films are always ineligible. For instance this year The Favourite, Sorry to Bother You, Isle of Dogs, Hereditary, are ineligible for the WGA but could pop up at Oscar. As for the adapted titles, Incredibles 2 was ineligible here but could be nominated at the Oscars (the original film was a screenplay nominee) and so were Death of Stalin and Leave No Trace which are very much still in the conversation for writing.
I suppose we should breathe a sigh of relief that the writers didn't acknowledge Bohemian Rhapsody?

AMERICAN CINEMA EDITORS AWARDS
ACE have announced their nominations in three categories for the 69th annual "Eddie" Awards. Here are their nominees and for some reason they have categories with 3, 4, or 5 nominees and you know how crazy that makes us.

Excuse *me*, where is SORRY TO BOTHER YOU for Art Direction?
The ACE also just announced their finalists and they're excellent: Roma, The Favourite, A Star Is Born, Cold War and First Man. The Rider, Girl and Namma are up for a Spotlight Award (whatever that is, but hurrah for The Rider!). Maybe First Man's showing in the Guilds means its life-support plug hasn't been pulled just yet.

Actually, Black Panther missed at the ACE, so I guess it's only Roma and A Star is Born that made into all three of these (of course, if Spotlight taught us anything is that missing the ACE is not a death knell for a film's Best Picture chances)...

This is why people shouldn't trust bloggers and pseudojournalist. And to think many of them have the power to low and up a score in Rotten tomatoes. Why do you assume that everyone will share your opinion? The people who makes movies (art directors, editors, sound editors, directors, actors) seem to have a very ddiferent opinion of Bohemian Rhapsody than the people whose ratings are part of the RT. As do the audience. And for all intents and purposes the opinion of people who makes film opinion and the people movies are made for opinion that watches too many marvel movies but never worked for the industry. I'm so glad Bhorap is getting the award recognition it deserves.

The Death of Stalin and especially The Party deserve editing nods.
You Were Never Really Here, easily, but I knew it had no chance.
Not to mention the overlooked Blindspotting.
The Favourite will come in and take Eight Grade's spot and maybe Death of Stalin will come in and take Roma's. I know The Favourite comes in so I hope those films come out (watching it tonight).

Rotten Tomatoes is literally an aggregator of movie critics' opinions. That is its job. Its purpose. Its reason for existing.
Hereditary missing in art direction guild awarda is the shade of the shade of it all!
Uh, how is A Quiet Place nominated for best original screenplay? No offense, but no one remarked how great the writing was in that film.
^Tell me about it, Jono. The whole thing hinges on a family who, living in a world where they can't make any noises, decide to have a baby. How contrived is that!? I kept thinking the whole film that these characters, who are so meticulous in everything else in their lives, would never have accidentally conceived a baby.
As for the nominations, Beale Street was ROBBED. ADG and ASC should have gone for it. This does not bode well. Is Beale Street the new Carol?!
In terms of what’s winning Best Picture, I think people are overreacting to the Golden Globes. Since the Oscars made their membership changes, they’re one of the most diverse and younger-skewing awards bodies of all the big ones. Don’t read into BoRap and Green Book wins too much.

Boo to the ASC nominations. "A Star is Born" and "The Favourite" over "If Beale Street Could Talk?!" Robbie Ryan is so talented but he's done FAR better work in the past.
Regarding Hereditary: it may not have been submitted by its studio for ADG consideration. The ADG had a list of eligible films on its website with a link to the presentation by each design team. Hereditary was not on the list, unlike any other other Oscar-adjacent film you can think of, including other A24 releases Eighth Grade and First Reformed.
(I say "may not have been submitted" rather than "was not submitted" because Welcome to Marwen was also not on that list, but ended up with a nomination.)
With regards to the script for A Quiet Place, I highly recommend actually reading the written screenplay. It's little-to-no dialogue approach to a screenplay makes it one of the more unique screenplays of the year, so it stands out despite any minor squabbles one may have with the plot. It's just a fun read, and I hope it makes it in to the Oscar nominations
No First Reformed nomination from the WGA, and that's with The Favourite ineligible.
I have a sinking feeling that Hawke won't make it. They don't care about critical acclaim this year.
I'm worried for First Reformed too. Hawke and Schrader both deserve Oscar nominations (at least) for what they have achieved.
Hereditary is being pushed only for Toni Colette at this point. They didn’t submit to the Art Direfors Guild. It’s a shame, too, as the miniature sets within the set were stunning.
I said months ago A Quiet Place is going to surprise in Originals Screenplay and I stand by it. The world building and extensive exposition in lieu of dialogue is impressive. The film would not be getting attention for its writing if it had more spoken dialogue. The planned and expressive silence is all defined by the screenplay and it works.
Beale Street was definitely robbed on the art direction front.
I second Robert G and Andy on A Quiet Place's nod; reading the screenplay after seeing the film made me appreciate it so much more. But if WGA wished to nominate a script that is funny and intelligently puts a spotlight on an interracial friendship, they should’ve chosen Blindspotting. Green Book should be held up as an example of how not to write a screenplay: cliche-ridden, formulaic, shallow, and patronizing.
Blindspotting is great, but it was not eligible at WGA, NewMoonSon.
Don't rule out The Favourite for Best Picture. If the script was eligible for the WGA, it wouldn't been nominated, make no mistake.
The art direction in Beale Street is beatiful. Especially in the scene where the pregnancy is revealed to her immediate family (her dress playing off the curtains and walls).
The cinematography is best in its view of the art direction, moreso than with the actors' faces.
