101 days til Oscar. How will Disney's fare fare?

by Nathaniel R

Glenn Close actually dressed up as Cruella for the movie's premiere!Remember Glenn Close's Globe nomination for 101 Dalmatians (1996)? In retrospect it's kind of fascinating that greedy Disney didn't start fully committing to live-actioning and spinning off all their animated properties until recently because that early example was a huge hit, the sixth most popular film in the US that year. It also grossed $320 million globally well before the days when billion dollar worldwide grosses became common for Disney blockbusters.

Close's broadly comic diva turn didn't cross over to an Oscar nomination but its sequel managed one (for Costume Design). With Disney quadrupling down this year with four options for voters to look at (Dumbo, Maleficent 2, The Lion King, Aladdin) one wonders how the Mouse House will fare come nomination morning. After the jump a list of exactly how previous remakes have fared and how 2019 might shake out...

  • The Jungle Book (1994) - zero nominations
  • 101 Dalmations (1996) - zero nominations
  • 102 Dalmatians (2000) - 1 nomination (Costume Design)

  • Alice in Wonderland (2010) - 3 nominations (Visual FX), 2 wins (Costume Design, Production Design)
  • Maleficent (2014) - 1 nomination (Costume Design)
  • Cinderella (2015) -1 nomination (Costume Design)
  • The Jungle Book (2016) - 1 nomination and win (Visual FX)
  • Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) - zero nominations
  • Pete's Dragon (2016) - zero nominations

  • Beauty and the Beast (2017) -2 nominations (Costume Design, Production Design)
  • Christopher Robin (2017) -1 nomination (Visual FX)

So the most nominations we've ever seen for one of their spin-offs or remakes of animated features was Eyesore in Wonderland's three but more common is no nominations at all or just one with the two most common categories being Costume Design and Visual FX.

2019 POSSIBILITIES

  • Dumbo (2019) - Costumes, Production Design, Score, Visual FX
  • Aladdin (2019) - Costumes, Production Design, Song
  • The Lion King (2019) - Visual FX, Song
  • Maleficent Mistress of Evil (2019) - Costumes, Visual FX

Of the four Disney remakes/spin-offs this year the worthiest contender is surely the Production Design of Dumbo (by the estimable Rick Heinrichs) though that feels like a longshot given the somewhat muted reception of the film. The  likeliest nomination is surely Visual FX for The Lion King's photorealistic animation and Best Original Song since, um... Beyoncé! Will Disney manage any additional nominations? We don't (currently) think so but we fear Aladdin sneaking in somewhere.

Too soon to be casually throwing around Glenn Close header pictures. A deserved loss, but it still stings. Overdue over individual merit, say it with me folks!

Wouldn’t be surprised to see DUMBO get in for Production Design, as Tim Burton films clearly do well in that category.

Please consider changing over to Disqus. You may dislike it aesthetically but imposers would never prosper. @Nathaniel R

This is getting out of hand. I, the true /3rtful, will not comment on this site again until Disqus or a similar verified commenting system is implemented. I will still be lurking in the shadows, but be assured all comments under the 'rtful' family are imposters. I value my integrity over being an input hoe on any topic, however tempting they may be. Also, if you would like to take me up on my offer to contribute an article, you know how to reach me. Love and Bates to all.

yikes, those wins still sting. Did Atwood really need a 3rd for this (before her eventual 4th)? Antonella Cannarozzi (I AM LOVE) is easily my winner that year.

Hear, hear. Lo Sono L'Amore is one of the most beautifully-costumed—and overall designed—films of this century. Alice in WTF doesn't hold a candle to it.

If you’re including Pete’s Dragon, then you should probably also include the Lohan Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, and Mary Poppins “Returns.”

I hope they ignore "The Lion King" like I did - it seems the most pointless remake ever made

Those costumes in Maleficent 2 are stupendously drool worthy gorgeous. And the actresses wear them with great aplomb.
