PETA's "Oscat" Winners: Bradley Cooper, Black Panther, Annihilation

by Nathaniel R

Here's an award you might not have heard of. PETA, the animal rights organization, gives out "Oscats" each year honoring the most animal friendly films and stars. So, even though Bradley Cooper has PETA's senior vice president says:

PETA is thrilled to recognize the people and projects behind Hollywood’s most significant animal rights advances of the year.”

The winners and why they were chosen after the jump...

The Cat’s MeowBlack Panther
For the use of CGI panthers and rhinos

Best Director
: Bradley Cooper – A Star is Born

Best Actress
: Natalie Portman – Vox Lux and Annihilation
Portman is an animal rights fan and apparently her Vox Lux wardrobe is all vegan!

Best Actor: Winston Duke – Black Panther
M'Baku, Duke's character, is of course the leader of a tribe of vegetarian warriors - there are even jokes about it

Best Stunt TeamAnnihilation
Apparently the whole stunt team was vegan! I suppose the Hollywood vegan community is tight knit so word must have gotten to PETA about this.

Best Animated Film: Isle of Dogs
This prize was for creative and cruelty-free imagery. (They must mean cruelty-free for real dogs given that it was an animated film because my god those dogs suffer in that movie, living on trash island and suffering from diseases and abandonment.)

Best SeaWorld Side-EyeLove, Simon and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
For films that nod to the problems of animals in captivity. I didn't remember this about Love, Simon (did you?) but there's dialogue line about animals living in captivity in amusement parks.

Best Instant Karma Moment: The Meg and Mowgli
As someone who saw neither of these movies I'm eager to hear from those of you to tell us what kind of Instant Karma we're talking about.

Best Costume: Donald Glover’s fur-free jacket from Solo: A Star Wars Story

Birds’ PickTully
I don't remember this as its been a long time since I've seen it but this prize for was the mention of the plight of chickens on meat farms.

Best DocumentaryFree Solo and Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
Both men profiled in these docs are or were (RIP Fred Rogers) vegetarians

In Memoriam: Stan Lee

Is for winning at Peta that Bradley Cooper never showed us his piece of meat?

Well, at least one voting body gave him Best Director.

Brown Cow -- I'm gooped.

I'm guessing instant karma for Mowgli is because the hunter is killed by animals at the end, though that seems weird considering it also has Mowgli killing Shere Khan.

Whatever PETA.
