Honestly, I'd rather have Meg Ryan win Best Actress than Jessica Tandy.
I wouldn't call Gattaca great, and I also wouldn't call Talented Mr. Ripley bad, but I just want to check to make sure the majority agree Gattaca is indeed the better movie, because I thought Ripley was kind of becoming a cult classic, but it really isn't as good as Gattaca.
Can people stop bashing Jessica Tandy? The best part of the announcement is seeing Jessica Lange turn her head at hearing her first name.

Gattaca is brilliant (but not a masterpiece). Mr. Ripley’s cast is astoundingly good but the film is a hard watch so not great at all but damn, that cast.
I only know Joel Embiid for bugging Rihanna, and THEN he almost kicks Regina King in the face?? Make better life choices, sir.
I’ll repeat myself: Jessica Tandy should’ve had the chance to transfer her Blanche DuBois from stage to screen and won an Oscar in 1952, but she still deserved it for DMD. (If Meryl hadn’t stolen the role of Sister Aloysius from Cherry Jones for DOUBT’s film adaptation, Kate Winslet still wouldn’t have a Leading Actress Oscar.) FYC: STOP denying the stage originators the chance to immortalize their roles on film!

I wouldn't say Meg was at her peak in 89,I was 13 then and had only seen her in Top Gun,this was the role she really got noticed for,Meg's peak was 93 - 98 and indeed this film should have gotten her a nod as should her 94 role in When a man loves a Woman.
Get your Meg facts correct and never diss Julia.
Nathaniel, just read an article in The New York Times where they polled 20 random Academy members about their thoughts on the Best Picture race but the author revealed that ALL 20 voted for Rami Malek. Ugh, it's really happening.

Oscar made space for so many iconic rom com performances (Working Girl, Broadcast News, Pretty Woman, Moonstruck, Peggy Sue Got Married) during the late 80s-early 90s that Ryan's Sally definitely deserved to be among them.

@Michael R - it is definitely happening, and I don't understand it. Malek struggles mightily against those false teeth, and loses. I don't think he even got the speaking voice and accent right, let alone how hard you can see the wheels turning in Malek's head - the musical performances seem calculated, instead of capturing the brilliance of Mercury, who made it seem like the performance just flowed out of him, and there were points in the movie where Malek made Mercury seem so functionally stupid that he struggled to speak words aloud.
Ryan Crowe, actors don't own roles, unless they wrote the play/script themselves. Even then there are some autobiographical one person shows I'd like to see the leads traded out for other performers.
