The Hugo Award Nominees 2019. Plus 75th anniversary Retro Prizes

With the weather warming up are you looking for spring & summer reads? For those of you who enjoy sci-fi / fantasy novels, you can always get recommendations each year from the Hugo Awards... though we wish these recommendations each year leaned a little more fantasy (the balance is definitely pro sci-fi with a few fantasy sprinklings). The nominations were determined by 1800 valid nomination ballots from members of the World Science Fiction Convention (WorldCon). If you'd like to be a nominator for 2020, you could join WorldCon this year.

Since this is a film site we'll start with their "dramatic presentation" prizes. 

Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form

Those who join WorldCon can vote on the awards before August. We've included links if the stories are online. There are also a list of 75th anniversary prizes too for reasons unbeknownst to us so there's a set of nominees for 1944 (aka produced in 1943) as well...

All but one of the novelists in this top category are women. The Hugos have been mired in controversy for the past several years due to representation issues. As far as we understand the controversy (and we might be off here because we're not embedded in this particular world at all as cinephiles who occassionally read sci-fi fantasy books)...since the nominating committee is a paid membership kind of deal, anyone willing to pay the fee (membership to WorldCon) can theoretically have a voice and can theoretically legally manipulate the results (if they get enough buy-in from like-minded fans. So the awards have become a battleground for representation politics things getting really hostile 5 years or so ago when a slate of nominees was mostly approved and pushed by a rabidly sexist patriarchy loving group... so even some of the authors withdrew themselves from consideration (not wanting to be associated).  Since then there have been developments both wild (one reactionary-pushed nominee turned out to be doing something like performance art and actually champions diversity) and expected because you can't really stop diversity and it's silly to try. N.K. Jemisin broke a record last year winning thrice consecutively, a first and gave this much-loved speech.

Anyway one imagines these culture wards are not going away any time soon as the sci-fi fantasy publishing world continues to, like Hollywood, have growing pains about who gets a voice and who is honored among the voices we do get to hear.

One male writer made this list, P. Djèlí Clark with a debut novella. I'm always curious about debuts or stand-alones (I think Gods Monsters and the Lucky Peach is a stand alone, too. Not entirely sure) because if there is one entirely regrettable thing about the sci-fi/fantasy genre even within its highest heights its the forcedness of everything being franchiseable with multiple novels.

The explanation for the Retro Hugos:

The first WorldCon was held in 1939; the first Hugos weren't given until 1953, and the awards skipped 1954. So, there are fifteen years during the WorldCon era for which there are no Hugo Awards (in some cases, it's because there was no WorldCon that year).

Beginning in 1996, each WorldCon had the option to award Retro Hugos for one of those missing fifteen years, if the Con fell on the 50th, 75th, or 100th anniversary of that year. These 1944 Hugos are the 7th set of Retro Hugos; future WorldCons still have the opportunity, if they fall in an anniversary year, to award Hugos for the 8 remaining years (40, 42, 45, 47-50, 52).

Those retro nominees are bomb. Conjure Wife is one of the most influential horror novels ever written, presenting a twist ending never before seen in a horror novel that became popular to the point of cliche. No one has ever done it as well and it's still terrifying to read.

Thanks for the retro explanation! The ones I’ve read of those are total classics.

One of the nominees is one of the best books I’ve read this year: “Artificial Condition” by Martha Wells. There are 4 novellas in this series (The Murderbot Series) and the nominated book, the second one, is my favourite.

You know how long winded many fantasy and sci-fi books are, and how you wish they had a ruthless editor to cut them down to maybe half of their 500 or 600 pages?

The Murderbot novellas are about 170 pages each. All of the good stuff and none of the padding. So refreshing!

Those nominees for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form are nearly perfect. Especially those specific Good Place and Doctor Who episodes.

Having read S.A. Chakraborty's debut, I cannot recommend it highly enough (It's called The City of Brass and is first in a trilogy).

I also have Spinning Silver, though I have not read it yet. May have to bump it to the top of my list.

This characterization of the revolt within the Hugo voters as rabidly sexist and racist is not entirely true, but we live in a post-truth world, so this bit is only for people who care about facts.

There was an insurgency due to what a significant amount of sci-fi and fantasy fans regarded as lesser work being awarded, in what was perceived as reward exclusively for being "woke", i.e. neither good, nor popular with sci-fi mainstream, just faithful to the progressive religious canon. Another criticism was that the committee was rewarding work that was merely borderline sci-fi / fantasy. The straw the broke the camel's back was a stupid short story about a dead ex becoming a dinosaur (I kid you not). For an Oscar equivalent, imagine Best Picture going to Tyler Perry's Medea, instead of Moonlight.

These critics were known as the Sad Puppies, and were initially led by a conservative gun rights advocate called Larry Correia. He had a history of complaining of bias against his work from progressive gatekeepers. The leadership almost immediately expanded to include a more diverse group of people, including two women and a white man married for 20 years with a black woman and father of a mixed raced little girl.

Pigtailing on the repercussion of the Sad Puppies, another faction emerged, called the Rabid Puppies, this one led by a reddit troll repeatedly described as a neonazi, but considering the reports usually misreport easily verifiable facts, pretend the two women cited above do not exist and deliberately conflate the two groups, when they are not associated with each other, it is hard to tell if it is entirely true or not. Let's assume it is. The Rabid Puppies gig is not to criticize ideological bias, but to bring anarchy, game the systen for shits and giggles, and, more recently, as it became clear they cannot win, to embarrass the Hugo Awards by getting the worst work possible nominated.

The Sad Puppies, who are the serious ctitics, have repeatedly distanced themselves from the Rabid Puppies (there is overlap between the groups' picks), and have also insisted that they do not oppose representation or diversity, so long as the work rewarded is deserving.

This claim is actually easy to fact check because you can go through their list of suggested nominees over the years. It includes many women and non-Caucasians. Even if don't want to go through the labor of fact checking, you can peruse through the headlines of nominees who voluntarily refused their nominations due to being on the Puppies lists. Several are women.

Regardless, all their efforts were thwarted, as none of their nominees ever won, except Guardians of the Galaxy (lol), which would have won anyway. Famously in 2015, they managed to lock up all nominees in a few categories, a counter movement was spearheaded and it resulted in *No Awards given* in a record number of categories, i.e. the voting committee's deemimg all nominated work to be unworthy of merit. This was a blow to the Sad Puppies, and their movement lost steam significantly after that.

Not so much for the Rabid Puppies, who successfully nominated their leader in at least three categories (he is a multiple Hugo nominee by now), and then moved on to another goal: diluting the prestige of the award by getting the shittiest work possible nominated.

To date, their greatest triumph was getting a 2016 Hugo nomination to "Space Raptor Butt Invasion", by Dr. Chuck Tingle, himself a famous troll character who writes prolific science fiction gay erotica that involves gay sex with dinosaurs and/or the Big Foot. Although Tingle happily accepted the nomination, he, of course, lost (he still finished third in the voting tally). He then went on to write "Slammed In The Butt By My Hugo Award Nomination".

Glenn -- yeah, i assume it's because people have forgotten, with the rise of television and the gradual bloating of movies to now when 90 minutes feels rare, is that the minimum length to be a feature film is defined as 45 minutes. (at least according to Oscar)
