Yes, No, Maybe So: "Sonic the Hedgehog"

One of these days big Hollywood will get a video-game adaptation right. Judging from Sonic’s teaser trailer, one that has sent Twitter into a frothing hate-frenzy and earned more dislikes than likes on Youtube, November 8, 2019 will not be that day. I don’t know a thing about the Sonic the Hedgehog games though I vaguely remember playing them once or twice as a child. Until this week I had no idea the character had a discernible fanbase. That being said, there’s something oddly intriguing about a project so ill-advised.

Carrey’s big ‘trailer moment’ is painfully unfunny. He’s basically saddled with pure mugging.

It’s Alvin and the Chipmunks all over again. Sonic looks like a walking cartoon instead of a cartoon brought to life. If you’re going to do live action, do live action.

“From the Producer of The Fast and the Furious.” Are they really trying to lure people in via this strange comparison between two films that star colorful things going really, really fast?

James Marsden is underrated as a comic actor, and Hedgehog might let him stretch a few of those muscles we haven’t seen since... Enchanted?

Trailer hints at large-scale action set to Sonic’s peculiar speed. If they’re anywhere near, say, Quicksilver in X-men, that could be fun.
It's a NO, but I reserve the right to watch it for kicks anyway! How about you?

Count me in as one of the very first people to forget this movie even existed five minutes after it begins playing for its opening "weekend" a good 22 hours before the weekend actually begins. James and Jim, you deserve so very, very much better.
I'm not sure where I saw it first or who said it but the gist was unless James is doing a striptease that ends with him mouthing my name I'm not seeing it.

All I can say.... AW FUCK NO!!!! This looks horrible and stupid. Jim Carrey and James Marsden deserve better.
I think "Gangstas Paradise" is the detail I absolutely can't wrap my head around. Why? Because they're both from the 90s? What else did they try?

The choice of Gangsta's Paradise might be the single most mind-boggling thing about this trailer. I don't see how it could fit, and as it is such a specifig song, I don't see how it will fit ironically, either.
If you want some 90s music, there is tons of Eurodance that would fit so much better - No Limit, It's My Life, What Is Love, Rhythm Is a Dancer...
And 'From the Producer of The Fast and the Furious' was the biggest laugh of the trailer, hands down. It tickled my almost as much as that one time I read on a poster "From the director of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns".

This Sonic really fails to capture the complex, haunted personality I remember from the game. Sonic is running from himself, and he’ll never it’ll never be fast enough. We should read that pain in his eyes. Like if Jack Lemmon in Save the Tiger was a corporate logo in red sneakers.
