A note about the comments

... I've sadly been informed that since the comment moderation was turned off the impostors have returned to ruin the fun for the rest of us. If you're a long time reader I deeply apologize for this. I hate for people to feel they are being discredited or falsely represented. But as I've conveyed before it's an impossible lift for the site to change its whole commenting system, as some have casually suggested and others have demanded, during our busiest time of year. The site is run from pure love of movies (and awards silliness) and not from a bank account or endless free hours (everyone has a day job) so our time and energy is best used on delivering content and not on spending needless money or time to worry about boring things like operating systems and software. Thank you for your patience as we return to a moderating system so we can better ferret out the people who aren't really here to discuss movies but to shit stir.

We'll rethink after Oscar season is over. Until then big hugs and deep gratitude  to everyone who wants to talk about the movies with each other. That's why we do this. Please continue doing so and we'll do our best to approve comments as soon we can peruse them in an effort to weed out the trolls.

I love this site but I gave up on it a couple of months ago

The comments were spoiling the whole intention of concentrating

On film. I came back on Monday after the Oscar noms. I have

Just read your statement and I intend to rejoin your site

Hope things work out as I know a lot of work goes into this.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRdf

Lord, some people...

Thank you, Nathaniel, and team TFE! Illegitimi non carborundum, y'all.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

That stinks... It's harder to interact with people when you have to wait for the comments to be approved and then there's like 20 in one lump some that just show up.

This is why we can't have nice things, lol. Oh well.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

It did happened to me on here but just twice I saw,the content of this site is getting better every year with new contributers so a few rogues won't stop people who love it here from checking it out,x.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Sending lots of love to all involved with the maintenance, care and work that is TFE. I've been following this site for YEARS and is my go to for opening my mind to film - and have learned SO MUCH along the way.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered Commentermikenewq

I’ll just go ahead and echo what’s already been said: it sucks that this has to happen, but this site has been an invaluable resource for me and has provided lots of entertainment too. I don’t intend on giving up on the site any time soon so keep doing what you’re doing!

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

Nathaniel, thanks for your note. I hope the impostors stop, and in the meantime, we'll be patient while the comments are checked for their legitimacy.

Loving the site as ever.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterEdward L.

Thank you for all that you, and your Team, do.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterforever1267

*sigh* Some people just want to watch the world burn, etc.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMJ

They waited around for moderation to be turned off again and reappeared: this is definitely some sort of disgruntled regular poster, not a bot. Do you have any way of figuring out who the culprit is?

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterwhunk

I was wondering what was going on. Thank you for providing such interesting and fun content. I'm still bitter about JLO's snub but alas, it's Awards Season (favorite time of the year) so the show must go on.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterErick

You’re a class act, per always, Nathaniel!

Big thanks for all you and your team do - no other website is so specific in its passion for film and the corresponding awards system!

Let’s please behave ourselves, fellow readers!

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRyan Crowe

i'm sorry that you have to deal with this nonsense as awards season picks up. i was thinking just yesterday how the posts since the nom announcement have been quick and incredible. thank you all for your excellent work as always, and for giving us a place to express our feelings about the season in a way that is exciting, fun, and humorous. keep it up, your fans love you for it!

and to echo @beyaccount, we love you gary!

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterCharles O

Nathaniel: big big thanks for everything you do and voicing this situation that strangely manifested itself in the last couple of months.

To the impostors, check your mental illness and do the world a favour. Do yourselves a favor.

No matter how annoying some commenters can be due to how they expressed their opinions on actors and movies, but I rather deal with the original @rtful, etc., than with sad people behind a keyboard with too much navel lint on their hands.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJones

While it is terrible that a few bad apples have done this. But the world needs the site. I can be patient and bear with you all as long as the TFE team keeps going.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterTom G.

I’ve been with you since 2008, Nathaniel, and will be faithful as long as you continue this hard work. I appreciate all the writers for their tireless, thankless, and penniless work. I check this site not daily but hourly. It’s a shame that trolls are trying to ruin a site run on pure love for cinema - the reason we are all here. Keep working, writers. Your fans are still here.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterBushwick

Oh, the internet. This is easily one of the best film sites on the web, and it sucks that you have to deal with that. I, for one, will keep coming back, no matter what.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJosh R

I've been an avid follower of the site since 2001 (when it was mostly colourful print and font, black background, and not so much images) I have always maintained contact. However, the past year or two began causing me concern when I found myself being usurped by someone who was definitely not me. I changed my e-mail addy as a result (don't know if that helped). Anyway, the result was that I almost completely stopped commenting, and just reading. Then I stopped reading, because the comments were so toxic. Hopefully this nonsense will end. Until then, keep on keeping on, Nathaniel.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterIshmael

I am bummed that Nathaniel & his crew that have been a part of my life for nearly twenty years (Wow-just realized that it's been that long!) are having to go through this. I hope whomever is doing this impersonating will change their tune soon. Until then, I am still here every day and ready to talk movies & Oscars! :)

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

When they go low, we can go high. So...how about a series on cinematic imposters? Dustin Hoffman in TOOTSIE, Barbra Streisand in YENTL, Leonardo DiCaprio in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, Ronald Coleman in TALE OF TWO CITIES, Hitchcock's FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT, Gerard Depardieu in CYRANO, etc.

January 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDavide

Didn’t Peggy Sue break the peace treaty that was working early 2020? Sounds like an easy ego versus altruism decision on their part now. Is a name worth causing Nathaniel and the site at large such pain? We sympathise with the idiotic position you should never have been put in, but if you love the site you’ll make like the next Cannes jury president and Do The Right Thing. Xo IJS We better still get unmoderated Oscar night though.

(although as an aside, I didn’t see any after your smackdown of them in the oscars thread, so they We’re barely noticeable, barring some immediate removal of fake comments before they hit the thread you must have done to warrant this post)

January 16, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterPragmatiste

Pragmatiste -- the impostor thing was not just about someone pretending to be peggy sue (though even that wouldn't be okay. why should it be okay for anyone to be harassed here?) but about several people being impersonated. And yes it started up again almost as soon as I clicked off the moderation. I've heard from a few people that recent comments in their name are not theirs.

it's very sad. (and yes i have been removing commnets here and there as soon as they appeared if they were obviously false). it's all quite tiring because i want to be writing articles!

Davide -- i love the way you think. Lemonade out of lemons.

Everyone -- i appreciate the kind words.

January 16, 2020 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Nathaniel, you should do whatever you want, whenever you want, including not doing anything. Please know I am someone who works in tech who is willing to donate their time, and I'm sure you have other faithful readers willing to help. I know that sometimes getting someone up to speed to help can take up as much time as doing it yourself, though - just whatever is best to keep you bringing your writing to us.

January 16, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

Who the heck is Gary? I haven’t seen them comment here. Is Gary the lead suspect for the imposter or something, I’m a bit confused? Funny with a fairly common name has no history here. I for one welcome comment handle ‘Gary’ when they choose to delurk!

January 16, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJuanita

Maybe Disqus?

January 16, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterLuke

We appreciate you, Nathaniel!

January 16, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterKelly Garrett

That's so annoying, sorry you have to put up with it. This is my fav site!! Keep it up!! Will you be doing a smackdown for 2020 supporting actress?? If so, do you know when? <3

January 16, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterjcon

Juanita- LOL "Gary" is a bit of an inside joke to people who loved HUSTLERS... it's something Kiki Palmer's character says when one of their targets blacks out and is uncertain to come to again.

January 16, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Shit, I really can't wait to get my missed films binge on then!

January 16, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJuanita

Thank you for everything you do Nathaniel. We all really appreciate you and your team.

January 17, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

I appreciate that you addressed this. Thank you for all you do here at TFE. I know it must be a pain to moderate all the comments at the site. We love you!

January 17, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterjules

I'm thrilled to have found this article. It gave me the information I've been seeking.
