Say No to the Blue Face - Jonathan Majors joins Ant-Man 3

by Ben Miller

Comic book movies can attract some high-class talent, and it looks like Lovecraft Country star Jonathan Majors is the latest to join the fray. Deadline is reporting Majors will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man 3. The third installment of Marvel’s most light-hearted franchise isn’t expected to come out until 2022, but Majors will join Ant-Man vets Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas, alongside director Peyton Reed.  It is unknown whether TFE-pfavorite Michelle Pfeiffer will return...

Majors is a major talent (no pun intended) and will assuredly elevate his role.  He broke out in a big way last year with The Last Black Man in San Francisco, earning a number of Supporting Actor nominations from critics groups, including the Independent Spirit Awards.  Unfortunately, add Majors to the long line of skilled non-white performers who could get lost among skin prosthetics or helmets.

In the comics, Kang the Conqueror is a 31st-century scholar that gets into some time-travel hijinks with the Fantastic Four.  Also, he looks like this:

You never know what will go down in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s a safe bet that Majors will be saddled with the task of acting under layers of rubber and makeup.  For all the things that comic book movies do well, showing off non-white faces (outside of Black Panther) is definitely not one of them.

Famously, Oscar Isaac *hated* being all blue-d up for X-Men: Apocalypse, calling the experience “excruciating.”  Hopefully, Majors has a better go of it and gets to show off his vibrantly expressive face.

With the marvels (again, no pun intended) of technology, though, perhaps Majors will go down the same road that Josh Brolin did with an augmented mo-cap look, as opposed to prosthetics.  After all, the Ant-Man films do feature some of the best, and most fun, uses of visual effects in the MCU. We will all find out when the film opens sometime in 2022.

I first saw him in "When We Rise" TV mini-series and was impressed, then in "The Last Black Man In San Francisco" - a superb actor.

I hope they reconsider the design of the character because I agree the constant use of actors of colour under large amounts of prosthetics is a trend that should be stopped.

Majors is a talent and is easily the best thing in everything he does. I first noticed him in Hostiles which he was great in. He should received a leading oscar nomination for Last Black Man last year as he was brilliant in it. In 2020 he has sky rocketed for his work in both D5B and the currently airing Lovecraft Country which I highly recommend everyone check out. It's not a perfect series but the highs are so great it's worth weekly watching.

I knew it was a matter of time before Marvel scooped him up! I'm happy for him, but of course I have all the reservations already expressed. He'll certainly be able to elevate whatever material he's given.

So now the theories are being confirmed bit by bit... Kang is closely related to the Fantastic Four.

There was a city hidden in a bubble in the quantum realm, and most comic-book fans pointed out, that would be Kang The Conqueror's.

They also guessed that we would going back to the Quantum Realm in Ant Man 3, and that it would be probably the introduction of both Kang and the Fantastic Four who may be trapped in Kang's city...

Along with the news of Lady Gaga being in talks to play Emma Frost for the MCU, that adds to the news that both Emily Blunt and John Krasinsky have both being in talks with Marvel for some undisclosed role, but the fans have been championing them to play Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic for so long, that all the pieces seem to be falling in the predicted places...

... the Fantastic Four will be introduced in Ant Man 3, trapped in the quantum real by Kang, and we will be seeing an adult and experienced version of the FF without the origin story, and rumor has it also, that Marvel does not want to wait to introduce the most powerful mutant in the universe, Franklyn Richards, from the get-go (for those unaware, he's the older son of Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman, filled with incredible amounts of cosmic energy and able to basically even create universes).
