First annual (?) "Super" Awards
by Nathaniel R
We're still trying to wrap our heads around the absolutely bizarre decision by the executives of the Critics Choice Association to launch a genre-specific awards show (think the Saturn Awards only from talking heads at various outlets rather than the fans) in the very year where most of those kinds of movies didn't actually open and in which none of the big stars would be able to actually attend. It's a head scratcher in so many ways though happily two good movies (Palm Springs and Soul) led with the most prizes.
Here are the winners (no, we did not vote)...

This is so... whatever. But hey SOMEONE gave Natasia Demetriou from "What We Do in the Shadows" an award so that's awesome.
If it means at least one prize for Elisabeth Moss in THE INVISIBLE MAN, sure why not? lol
Completely bizarre. And a lot of awards to the same movies and series.
Does this mean that the regular Critics Choice awards won’t include genre specific awards anymore?
Daveed Diggs best “action actor” for Snowpiercer? A lot of things going wrong here...
Golden Raspberry is more interesting and more fun.
I really hope this is traction for Vince Vaughn to be nominated at the Golden Globes. He is amazing in FREAKY!!
I love Supernatural and Ackles in particular, but really don't see that as a "horror" show. Several odd classifications here.
Already committing category fraud by calling Da 5 Bloods an action film.
The very idea is so embarrassing and DA 5 BLOODS winning for "action" movie is nuts. Are superhero movies not elible for action movies even though superhero movies almost always involve action? But I love those INVISIBLE MAN and PALM SPRING wins. Good for them.
The Critics Choice Association are inscrutable, nonsensical and severely lacking in taste and backbone.
Superheroes are always either/both science fiction and action... so what's the point here? Who's the audience for this?
Bojack is great though.
I definitely agree that making separate awards for genre fare undermines the 'actual' awards and makes it even tougher for these movies/shows to break through, but not having categories like this also means that lots of talented people get ignored in hopes that doing so will make the larger groups suddenly change what they nominate. It's tough both ways, but I'm just happy that some of this work is getting recognized. Particularly thrilled for Jensen Ackles/Supernatural, who's been doing pretty thankless work on a show the main awards bodies would never touch, and has been better than plenty of Emmy nominees for more than a decade.
Parker -- i suppose there might be an audience for this sort of thing if the stars of this sort of movie would show up to such shows ... but would they? And to test that why on god's green earth would anyone think this was the year to launch it? They announced this AFTER the pandemic had already begun and blockbuster style movies were being delayed a year already.
Feline -- except for the Razzies have that misogyny and homophobia problem. so...
This awards show was a sheer delight. Back in the day, I lamented that "Buffy" and "Star Trek" would never make a dent at the Emmys because they were genre shows. But this awards show honored excellence in shows just as good, if not better, than things like "Breaking Bad."
Harley Quinn won two actresses awards. "The Boys" got some major love for a sensational season. Betty Gilpin won for a fantastic performance in "The Hunt." "Palm Springs" made a mark. All in all, with a few head scratchers, I loved most every single winner.
And it turned me on to "Spontaneous," which received no awards but got nominated. I had never heard of it, but this bizarre and truly clever horror film is a modern-day classic, cementing stars Katherine Langford and Charlie Plummer as true stars of tomorrow.
