Streaming Roulette, Oct: The Manor, Black Widow, 'Just a Girl' and more...

New month and a... oops, we're approaching the halfway mark. How did that happen? It's past time for another round of Streaming Roulette where we point out a handful or two of random titles that are streaming and just for fun, freeze frame them at totally random places in the scroll bar...

I brought a little something to get the party started...

THE MANOR on Prime
Barbara Hershey stars in this new horror film about a woman convinced that residents of a nursing home are being killed. Bruce Davison co-stars so you get two 1990s Oscar nominees in this new film from a director named Axelle Carolyn...

I needed out.

BLACK WIDOW on Disney Plus
You know what's annoying? People who think that Scarlett Johansson isn't a good actress. They need to watch more movies. She's been excellent for years: Ghost World, Lost in Translation, Girl with the Pearl Earring, Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Don Jon, Under the Skin, Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, and, yes, as Black Widow herself Natasha Romanoff. She's even excellent stripped of her beauty with only her voice to work with (Her, Isle of Dogs) She's an easy target due to her outsize fame and a few missteps but she's an excellent movie star. Can't wait to see what's next after being freed from the MCU.

I can't see anything.

AFTER THE THIN MAN (1936) on HBOMax
HBOMax continues to be the only mainstream streaming service to regularly program a healthy amount of films made before the 1990s. Bless them for their service! This Myrna Loy and William Powell screwball/mystery series ran for six films from 1934-1947. Franchises have been with us forever but only in the past decade or so have they all but obliterated originals from the cinematic landscape.

I had to deal with it in some way so I took everything out of my mind and i was like that for a long time. Until somebody said to me 'You really need therapy.' That was Marlon Brando.

RITA MORENO: JUST A GIRL WHO DECIDED TO GO FOR IT (2020) on Netflix
That quote serves as a bridge between Rita talking about being raped by one of her agents and talking about her obsessive and unhealthy (but consensual) long relationship with Marlon Brando.

- Why are you so eager to help me?
- Because once, a long ago, you did the same for me.

THE MASK OF ZORRO (1995) on Hulu
Forgot this was an origin story. Origin stories are the bane of my existence with franchises. Can't we all assume by now in the end times of neverending franchises that culturally we all know the origins of every movie property that's been around for several decades? Still vaguely remember this being a pretty solid entertainment with a wonderful cast: Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Anthony Hopkins.

Dust to dust, Superman.

SUPERMAN & LOIS (2021) on HBOMax
Speaking of... I wasn't going to watch this if it did the Origin Story yet again but YAY it doesn't. It dispenses with that in the opening 3 minutes. Perhaps I'll watch! Now if only Spider-Man and Batman would quit telling theirs. After 59 and 82 years of those characters respectively in pop culture, we... get... it.

They're saying you're officially bonkers. Unfit to be seen in public. You have to get out there and show them othwerise. Because once they think you're just another unhinged woman driven made her unfaithful hus-- [cuts herself off as said husband enters]

DIANA THE MUSICAL on Netflix
I shan't be watching this given the bad buzz. After The Crown, Spencer, and this this year alone plus obsessive media coverage and docs and a biopic over the past 40 years, I think we've had enough Diana-related projects to last us the rest of our lives, don't you?

I shall look after you. And you will comfort me.

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN at Criterion Channel
My good sir, let him finish his soup, before you ask for a lifetime commitment! This James Whale classic is still perfect. And still perfect for October. Part of Criterion's "Universal Horror" series.

To watch Meryl being matched by an actor who is as strong as her, as smart as her, as funny as her, as winning as her, as kind as her, is spectacular. The energy between them is unmistakable...

AMERICAN MASTERS: RAUL JULIA - THE WORLD'S A STAGE on Amazon Prime
In this shot they're talking about Raul & Meryl Streep's run in a production of "Taming of the Shrew" in Shakespeare in the Park. She spit in his face onstage (unplanned, without warning) and his reaction is priceless.

William Powell had quite the year in 1936, didn't he? 3 top 10 hits.

- The Great Ziegfeld (Best Picture winner, #1 film in its year)
- The Ex-Mrs. Bradford (really the only forgotten one)
- My Man Godfrey (Best Actor nomination in an enduring classic)
- Libeled Lady (another Best Picture nominee)
- After the Thin Man

if you skip diana the musical you're missing out on one of the most hilarious [unintentional] comedies of the year

it is hypnotically terrible - i could not look away

I wasn't planning on seeing DIANA either but everything I've seen of it makes it look, as par says above, like the funniest comedy ever. I can't wait to see it.

Definitely agree with you on origin stories So happy MCU decided to just skip that for their Spider-Man.

I was just re-watching Black Widow on Disney+ as a way to make up for the awful screening I went to back in July due to the projector going on the fritz a few times.

While I would rank in the middle of the list of the films of the MCU, it is still a solid film as yes, Scarlett Johansson is an incredible actress. In fact, I think she's one of the best right now. Other performances that people should see her in are: Manny & Lo, The Horse Whisperer, The Man Who Wasn't There, An American Rhapsody, Her, We Bought a Zoo, Hail, Caesar!, and Lucy.

Upon re-watching Black Widow, what made me enjoy the film the 2nd time around is the chemistry between Johansson and Florence Pugh. I enjoyed watching them including the family reunion table scene where Pugh just stole the scene from everyone. That was the moment that I would say that the film belonged to Pugh as I think the film is really part of an upcoming trilogy for Pugh's character as someone who is trying to find her own identity as the Black Widow.

I started watching DIANA and had my hands over my eyes within about ten minutes. I haven't finished it yet, but I'd say whoever wrote the lyrics makes Tim Rice sound like Shakespeare. I felt so sorry for all the (no doubt excellent) actors stuck in this turkey. Definitely a highlight of the season so far.

Someone put CZJ in a musical.
