Golden Globe Nominees: "Belfast" and "Power of the Dog" lead

Kenneth Branagh's childhood memoir Belfast and Jane Campion's stirring psychosexual western Power of the Dog lead the 79th annual Golden Globe nominations with seven each. Among comedies or musicals, which are always the highlight of the Globes since that's the only award bodies to take those genres of film seriously, early releases like Cruella and In the Heights had to settle for just one nomination each (in acting) ... but December arrivals Cyrano, Don't Look Up, Licorice Pizza, tick tick..BOOM!, and West Side Story all snagged multiple nominations including Best Picture.
This year, the HFPA threw no surprises at all into their top-of-the-line nominations (which is not like them) unless you count Javier Bardem in Being the Ricardos and Mahershala Ali in Swan Song as Drama Actor nominees but the Globes have always been kind to December films led by high profile stars, whether or not they have opened or proved anything like conversational staying power. But perhaps this 'no surprise... only assumed future Oscar nominees' field is because the Globes have had other things on their mind than screenings and their ballots...
They've been working on reforms and overhauls after being shunned by Hollywood (naturally after Hollywood came out to collect their prizes from the same group). NBC may have dealt the group a death blow by refusing to televise them this year. Without television, Hollywood simply won't care but as we saw for years and years, Hollywood will gladly look the other way past all of your internal and ethical problems, if you have a prime-time show that does big numbers.
As for television, well there are plenty of surprises there (nearly a complete shut-out for White Lotus for example) but that's probably because they have far too few categories to correctly honor TV. It's insane (and very much like the stingy SAG Awards) that there are only two categories (i.e. ten slots) to cover the entirety of supporting casts across limited series, anthology series, drama series, comedy series, and made for television movies.

This is seriously the most solid set of nominations in over a decade for them. And I love how there are no ties, five noms apiece. Shame that there won’t be a ceremony and nobody’s taking it seriously. Some snubs of course, but nothing embarrassing here at all. And glad Ruth Negga made it in!

I'm also very happy for Jessica Chastain. She's marvelous in The Eyes of Tammy Faye but I feared that voters may have forgotten her by now. She should be in contention for the win.
Too bad Simon Rex got such a juicy role in a rare year where the musical/comedy category is almost entirely stacked with musicals. Bummer.
Rooting for Kirsten Dunst!!! If she doesn’t win, I’d also be very happy for Ruth Negga but I have a good feeling about Dunst at the Globes.
I'm very happy Ruth Negga made it in. She gives a strong performance, and the Globes first gave her a boost on her way to her first Oscar nomination. I am sad to see Tessa not here, even if it's expected.
I think Sony Pictures Classics played Paralell Mothers incorrectly. Much like the Wife, Volver, and Pain and Glory, I think an earlier release data would have benefited Penelope and the film. They tend to struggle with December/January releases (e.g., Bening for Film Stars, French Exit, etc.). Her snub here, I think, ends her campaign. At best, she'll be a BAFTA nominee.
On the TV side, I'm glad that Hannah Einbinder got a lead nomination. She's good and she's not supporting. I'm also ecstatic about the Christine Baranski nomination. She's great in that role, and took a strong supporting character stock character (the grand dame of the firm) and made her into a compelling leading lady. While nominations for Audra and Mandy are in order, I'm just glad the Globes finally nominated her ahead of her new HBO show.
Also, I forgot to mention how much I love Antony Ramos' nomination. He's so charismatic and was a strong lead, and while his film flopped, I do hope this makes up a tiny bit and helps him land his next role/series.
Big loser: Nightmare Alley
Surprised The White Lotus did not do better on the television side.
Actresses of a certain age did not fare well at the new and improved HFPA.
No to Meryl Streep for Don’t Look Up. No to Judi Dench for Belfast. No to Rita Moreno for West Side Story. No to Frances McDormand for The Tragedy of Macbeth.
I too hope Negga makes it but think they'll double dip for the Belfast or WSS ladies leaving Dowd and Negga out,I am feeling a Dunst win here

Surprised no Frances or Penelope,very happy for Chastain,very sad for Tessa.
Seems to me that 5th Best Actor spot is going to someone in a film they love or a Willem Dafoe type pick so don';t count out Simon Rex yet.

It's probably worth noting that they nominated TV Aretha and not movie Aretha (neither portrayal really worked for me)...

It would be Negga's SECOND nomination.
I think Joe was saying the globes gave her an early boost for her first nom in 2017 (for Loving). I'm also thrilled she's in! Need Thompson here as well, though.

If you look at the Best Actor nominees for both Comedy/Musical AND Drama... Ramos is actually in the highest grossing movie of everyone. Yes, most are streaming and/or not out yet but it's still insane to me that IN THE HEIGHTS keeps being getting the "flop" label while so many films who has made much less haven't.
These are actually a really solid batch of nominees. Even the TV ones didn't forget something like POSE which hasn't been on air for the whole year (right?). Still don't know if I see that Chastain nomination for Tammy Faye happening. Or Gaga for GUCCI. I feel like one of them has to faulter.
Am I the only one who thinks it's kind of sad that Mike Faist is being totally ignored in terms of awards consideration? His Riff in WEST SIDE STORY is a real standout to me.
Dan H -- i think a lot of people are sad about that. but it tends to happen when voters are lazy and a performance comes out of nowhere at the last minute from someone who isnt famous already. :(
I agree with Glenn. Gaga, Chastain or Kidman are occupying similar spots within the race. However, I think Gaga benefits from her movie actually being something the general public cares about. My feeling is one will fall for Rachel Zegler in West Side or Alana Haim in Licorice Pizza because they are Best Picture contenders.
Sigh! Let's hope the Academy Awards picks better nominations than this.
