Golden Globe Nominations - The Movies

by Nathaniel R

Hollywood was up early for the Globe nominations. They were read this time by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P Henson. As per usual it was absolute chaos with nonsensical snubs, controversies, and weird inclusions (everyone surely googling "Kate Hudson Music"), and happy news too like Michelle Pfeiffer snagging her 8th Globe nomination. The full list of movie nominations is after the jump...

Drama

  • The Father
  • Mank
  • Nomadland
  • Promising Young Woman
  • Trial of the Chicago 7

Surprise ratio: Not much. This reads like a very Globe list.
What was left out: The most noticeable omission is that none of the three black dramas that have garnered so much awards press (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Da 5 Bloods, and One Night in Miami) were included. Also missing which might have happened are Minari and News of the World

Musical or Comedy

  • Borat
  • Hamilton
  • Music
  • Palm Springs
  • The Prom

Surprise Ratio: A little. Music is the obvious... what's that? Whenever the Globes throw in a "what's that" it's something that hasn't opened yet but screened for them. This film opens February 12th and stars Kate Hudson as the new guardian of her half sister "Music" who is austistic.
Who was left out: Would have been nice to Emma. here, don't you think?

Actress, Drama

  • Viola Davis, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
  • Andra Day, United States vs Billie Holliday
  • Vanessa Kirby, Pieces of a Woman
  • Frances McDormand, Nomadland
  • Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman

Surprise ratio: Andra Day gives a traditional strong biopic performance so it's absolutely not a surprise though the movie's low profile (to date) made it not a sure thing
Who was left out: Winslet, Loren, Zendaya, Coon, Beharie, Adams (who would have been a very Globe choice)... These five might actually transfer all the way to Oscar night.

Actress, Musical or Comedy

  • Maria Bakalova, Subsequent Moviefilm
  • Kate Hudson, Music
  • Michelle Pfeiffer, French Exit
  • Rosamund Pike, I Care A Lot
  • Anya Taylor-Joy, Emma.

Surprise Ratio: OFF THE CHARTS. No Meryl Streep who the Globes love twice as much as the Oscars. Kate Hudson in Music? We'll have to look it up. Pike for a movie that only just barely started to screen. We expected to see Pfeiffer, Taylor-Joy, and Bakalova. This is Pfeiffer's 8th career nomination. Her first six were consecutive and all in Best Actress. How awesome is that?
Who was left out: Sad to not see Cristin Milioti here for Palm Springs. And again it's very strange and atypical to see the Globes leave Meryl Streep out, not once but twice: The Prom and Let Them All Talk

Actor, Drama

  • Riz Ahmed, Sound of Metal
  • Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
  • Anthony Hopkins, The Father
  • Gary Oldman, Mank
  • Tahar Rahim, The Mauritanian

Surprise Ratio: Tahar Rahim is a shock. He's a fine actor but usually when the Globes throw a surprise in its someone who is a mainstream US or UK star (like, oh, Kate Hudson)
Who was left out: Delroy Lindo, Mads Mikkelsen, Steven Yeun, Ben Affleck and Tom Hanks (either of whom woulda been a very Globe choice)

Actor, Musical or Comedy

  • Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
  • James Corden, The Prom
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton
  • Dev Patel, Personal History of David Copperfield
  • Andy Samberg, Palm Springs

Surprise Ratio: The Corden nod, while atrocious, would not have been a shock save for the fact that they DIDN'T nominate Meryl Streep who is 1,000 times better in the same movie. Bizarre. The rest is unsurprising and kind of lovely.
Who was left out: We're drawing a blank. Surely there's someone.

Supporting Actor

  • Sacha Baron Cohen, Trial of the Chicago 7
  • Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah
  • Jared Leto, The Little Things
  • Bill Murray, On the Rocks
  • Leslie Odom Jr, One Night in Miami

Surprise Ratio: LOL. Leto. This is as embarassing as the Corden nomination. On the other hand it's not so unGlobe like. Isn't this rather like the Aaron Taylor Johnson nod for Nocturnal Animals that one year. AND HE WON.
Who was left out: Actual Supporting Actors (sigh) as three of the five are leads.

Supporting Actress

  • Glenn Close, Hillbilly Elegy
  • Olivia Colman, The Father
  • Jodie Foster, The Mauritanian
  • Amanda Seyfried, Mank
  • Helena Zengel, News of the World

Surprise ratio: Helena Zengel is a teensy tiny bit of a surprise but not much since...
Who was left out: ...the  Globes were never going to go for Youn Yuh-jung in Minari. That's not the way the play the awards game (sigh). The big "snub" is surely Ellen Burstyn since they obviously watched Pieces of a Woman.

Director

  • Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman
  • David Fincher, Mank
  • Regina King, One Night in Miami
  • Aaron Sorkin, the Trial of the Chicago 7
  • Chloe Zhao, Nomadland

Surprise ratio: none. The Globes LOVE directors who are either very famous or are big buzzy names that season (sometimes that makes their list better than Oscars list and sometimes that makes it worse). This is the first time women have dominated the Best Director category.
Who was left out: Given the Best Picture backing, Florian Zeller in The Father but he doesn't fit the Globe standard criteria for this category as they probably didn't know who he was.

Screenplay

  • Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman
  • Jack Fincher, Mank
  • Aaron Sorkin, Trial of the Chicago 7
  • Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton, The Father
  • Chloe Zhao, Nomadland

Surprise ratio: none.
Who was left out: who wasn't? The Globes only have one category for screenplay so a bunch gets left out every season. The biggest miss in terms of Oscar appeal is probably One Night in Miami.

Foreign Language Film

  • Another Round (Denmark)
  • La Llorona (Guatemala)
  • The Life Ahead (Italy)
  • Minari (US)
  • Two of Us (France)

Surprise Ratio: None as we are never surprised by their foreign choices which are impossible to forsee
What was left out: Too much to mention!
Note: The Life Ahead and Minari are not eligible in the parallel category at the Oscars but the other three could turn up... though we suspect the only transfer will be Another Round. The Globes and the Oscars RARELY see eye to eye in this category

Score

  • Alexandre Desplat - Midnight Sky
  • Ludwig Goransson - Tenet
  • James Newton Howard - News of the World
  • Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - Mank
  • Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste - Soul

Surprise ratio: None
What was left out: The buzz on scores this year has been next to non-existent since Reznor & Ross have hogged all the attention but it's sad not to see Emile Mosseri's work in Minari.

 Songs

  • "Fight For You" -Judas and the Black Messiah
  • "Hear My Voice" -Trial of the Chicago 7
  • "Io Si (Seen)" -The Life Ahead
  • "Speak Now" -One Night in Miami
  • "Tigress & Tweed" - United States vs Billie Holliday

Surprise ratio: very minor as we never know what to expect in Song other than celebrities and we ggot that heer with Diane Warren, Leslie Odom Jr, and Andra Day. But it's sad that all of these are end credits songs. Nothing that's really part of the movie.
Who was left out: It's worth noting that no musicals were nominated. Nothing from Over the Moon or The Prom or even Music (which has Sia behind it and which they obviously liked... but maybe none of it is new songs?)

Animated Feature

  • The Croods
  • Onward
  • Over the Moon
  • Soul
  • Wolfwalkers

Surprise Ratio: none. The Globes like it very mainstream in animated feature so this is exactly as expected. The Oscar list will not be the same.
What was left out: Anything unusual or from overseas (Wolfwalkers is from Ireland it has a high US profile)

What do you make of the Globe Movie nominations this year? (Abe will be covering the TV nods in a separate post)

I am very pleased for Foster and Zengel as they needed this and Pfeiffer to an extent

Hudson and Pike were surprises but Meryl is only ok in both her movies she can sit it out this year at home with Don.

Jared leto media interviews and little Things being new and fresh helped,no Oscar nomination though.

Ellen Burstyn will be the snub come Oscar time cos Close feels right for a win after this.

Best Actress Drama is wonderful

Paul Raci as Nat said is not a big star hence the snub,SAG will rally I hope.

Riz should win in a walk over the others.Sad no Delroy or Ben.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Music is a film about autism by Sia,hope she doesn't sing in it.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

I believe Minari was not eligible for other awards since the globes decided it was a foreign language film.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterKelly Garrett

They really need to diversify their voting members. It’s the same issue every year. Minari snub I saw it coming when they were headlines about them being racist bunch so I figured they would just ignored it.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterGolden

Tahar Rahim IS a fine actor. For folks who don't know him, I recommend his TV work in The Looming Tower, The Eddy, and The Serpent, all on streaming, all great shows.

Oh, Olivia Colman, you are a Golden Queen. Remember when she won 2 TV BAFTAS in the same year?

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPam

Which actors' chances does this hurt the most? Ellen Burstyn?

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPaulo

Sad for Raci. Glad for Rahim.

Congrats Glenn Close.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

LMFAO at the James Corden nom

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Cannot believe the 2 Streep snubs but the Best picture and Corden nomination is salt in the wound.....what even are the Globes without Streep in attendance? But seriously... I am shocked.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Flabbergasted by the Streep omission. She must have split her own vote. Leto over Raci, Turman, Rylance, Langella, Hodge, Domingo, et cetera et cetera is a joke.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

Happy to see Palm Springs here.

Weird how Lin Miranda is nominated when he is clearly the inferior actor of the two leads - Leslie is the real acting star of Hamilton.
Also if they were planning to nominate Hamilton actors, it doesn't make sense to leave Diggs out.

All the "black" movies were shunned from best movie nominations, so they better be prepared for some racist quotes coming their way.

Amanda Seyfried's ridiculous nominations continue, for a role that is nothing.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterUnknown

Kelly -- it was still eligible everywhere else. Just not in Best Picture.

Michael R -- and a bad cruel joke at that!

February 3, 2021 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Just realized Da Five Bloods was completely snubbed. How awkward that Spike Lee's kids are The Golden Globes Ambassadors this year!

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

I love mess!

Kelly Garrett - They gave Huppert Best Actress for Elle, so they could have nominated the actors from Minari.

This doesn't solidify Glenn Close's Oscar. They loved Mank, it seems very likely Seyfried will win here (and Bakalova is locked for that lead Comedy Globe).

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterjules

I was secretly hoping that Eurovision would score a song nomination for Husavik. A surprisingly touching song for such a goofy film -- not to mention a song that actually drives a portion of the plot.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterjp

Raci needs SAG tomorrow. Such beautiful work.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

I am so happy for Jodie Foster and Glenn getting nominated! YES!! But with this, Close will relive two awards traumes: the Foster win and the Colman win. So is Glenn gonna win this time around?

Tomorrow the SAG will announce their noms. If Close and Foster are nominated as well, that means their 90% sure will be nominated for an Oscar

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterManuel

King's nod seems very out of place if they're gonna snub the film in screenplay and picture. Patronizing is what it is.

Jared Leto is nothing like Taylor-Johnson. Nocturnal Animals was an actual thing in the race for a while and him and his costar were heavily talked for nominations and Shannon eventually got it.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterBD

Tahar Rahim! Glenn Close! Daisy Edgar Jones!

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterOwl

Kate Hudson must have sent the HFPA members diamond tennis bracelets. Streep is the best thing in The Prom.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMinerva

Tahar Rahim!!! It's about fuckin' time!!!

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Camus

Ma Raney got what it deserved. Regina over Florian is a joke.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterYolonda

I'm so happy for Glenn and Michelle.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterFerdi

Corden? Really? Why? Happy for Vanessa Kirby and Emerald Fennell! Sad for Delroy and Eurovision...

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAntônio

Very sad to see Delroy Lindo miss. I really hope he isn’t this year’s Ethan Hawke. I think if he makes it in at SAG he’s in, but I hope Netflix is giving him the big push. It’s easy to see Da 5 Bloods as more of a film the academy would celebrate than the Globes.

Regina King’s film is really well directed, but it’s surprising to see her here given the lack of a Film nomination. This very much feels like the globe inviting a star and getting the boost of making headlines with three women nominated.

Glad to see Glenn here, but she feels a bit like this year’s Annette. It will be interesting to see if she can sustain momentum, but I’m skeptical. Also, if she loses to Olivia or Jodie here,or at the Oscars, it would be too much.

I’m excited to check out Rahim’s film. He is a beautiful man, and has always been an impressive actor. Exciting to see Dev Patel make it in. He has such star quality, and a nom here feels like the appropriate way to reward him.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

Some of you commentators can’t seem to express your disappointment at a snub without insulting another nominee. Like why?
So happy to see two women of colour in Best Director and three women altogether. Very very sad and perplexed that neither Michaela Cole or I May Destroy You got in the TV categories (but I’m sure that will come later).

Congratulations to all the nominees

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMichael P

Close is not going to win but she will be nominated to everything as she should.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn or Glenda

Am delighted for Dev Patel, who is funny and very charming in David Copperfield

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterIano

Glad to see Glenn here, but she feels a bit like this year’s Annette.

Foster is this year's Bening. Her movie is a total irrelevancy. Whereas there's enough press to make Hillbilly happen outside of supporting actress alone. Although, Close can Kathy Bates it.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

The Music and Kate Hudson noms are such a Globes move. A WTF move, but that's their thing.

And I guess I'll forever be the broken record that keeps saying I can't believe Borat is getting awards recognition.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterV.

I love Hamilton as much as the next guy but filmed staged shows OUT OF MY MOVIE CATEGORIES. I don't care how slick the production. You can tell they don't really even believe the classification otherwise Hamilton would be all over the acting categories.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMichael C.

Honestly the most egregious snub for me is in television. In what world is I May Destroy You not the best thing on television last year?

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterBushwick

...she [Streep] can sit it out this year at home with Don.
And everybody else.

How awkward that Spike Lee's kids are The Golden Globes Ambassadors this year!
Indeed...🤭

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterWorking stiff

It seems Bakalova is going to take this and also probably BAFTA (Sacha Baron Cohen's influence) and I don't discard BOTH win both here (Borat as leads) and BAFTA (both as supporting, for this one and The Trial of the Chicago 7).

I think Oscar may snub Bakalova, but if she's nominated for SAG, she will be nominated... and if she wins Globe and BAFTA, she will be the possible spoiler to Youn. It's odd that the two Supporting Actresses that have won the most precursors, are absent in the line up (I am unsure if Bakalova would have made the cut in Supporting... but on Lead, she's the frontrunner at the Globes).

Oscar Supporting Actress...

Close
Colman
Seyfried
Youn
... and a 5th nominee from Bakalova, Burstyn and Zengel. If Bakalova misses, Youn wins, with Seyfried as spoiler.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

Come On, Glenn!
Poor Delroy!
Gillian Anderson in THE CROWN is the most egregious snub, and why are there only four nominees in her category?!?

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterFrances Bean

Also, it's embarrassing that they shut out Da 5 Bloods completely. Not unexpected, but embarrassing.

Mank got a big push, but I think that, regretfully, Mank is going to go the "Bugsy" way at the Oscars. Maybe up to 10 noms and winning only two techs.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

Who was left out of Best Actor in a Comedy?

Seth Rogen for American Pickle.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMichael C.

Wow, first Meryl gets gaslighted by The New York Times (they failed to include her in their best 25 actors list) and now her old friend the Globes has decided she's not as good as Kate Hudson.

I have to say, the only thing that really excited me last year was The Queen's Gambit. Film was very dreary in 2020. Happy for Pfeiffer.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterTom Ford

@ Frances Bean

Gillian Anderson is the fifth nominee.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterWorking stiff

Meh, pretty much the same abominations, as per.

Love that Daisy Edgar-Jones made it for Normal People, and horrified Mescal did not. They must be playing Opposite Day with the Emmys. Both of their performances outrank nearly every one nominated under the film categories.

Ah well. Nice to see the HFPA not losing their stranglehold on bizarro and mediocrity even in the time of pandemics, haha.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterManny

I don't think May I Destroy you deserved anything, what a horrid bitter show and unsympathetic lead.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

I think Carey Mulligan's chances of winning are definitely rising.

Perhaps this is the end of Meryl's awards dominance of breathing and being nominated. I love her, of course, but she's been rewarded more than enough.

I co-sign those who are upset at Michaela Coel and I May Destroy You missing. That hurt me.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

markgordonuk - I don't think it was bitter at all. I thought it illustrated the very complex state of the current world and how every human is a little bit guilty of playing victim while also being a villain in their own way.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Thank you, Working Stiff!
CNN only had four nominees listed, beginning with Helena Bonham Carter and omitting Gillian entirely, which I couldn’t fathom!

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterFrances Bean

That Pfeiffer nomination is epic—and she appears to have a good shot at winning.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJF

LOL at certain film pundits already saying on twitter that globes don't matter, that SAG is what really counts.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy

Also, it’s delightful to see Michelle Pfeiffer here. I can’t wait to see her film. She almost always delights. However, it’s easy to see Anya Taylor-Joy winning here for be the hot new thing, with Cate or Shira taking the TV actress Globe away from here.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

If those were the best director nominees for the Oscars, I wouldnt be mad at all.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPablo H.

I don't mind Da 5 Blood was shut out : i think Lindo overracted and the screenplay was a mess.... i liked it because you feel its heart is in the right place, but i doesn't belong in any "best of the year" list.

I feel Jodie Foster is this years Annette Bening : a last minute release with minimum buzz that the Globes jumped at to secure one more famous face.

The Comedy list is a joke and i agree the Corden nomination will get him even more bad press than he already got for The Prom.

February 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterClement.Paris

I'm relieved by the Pfeiffer nomination. Didn't feel like a guarantee. Also relieved that Saoirse Ronan has been nowhere to be found. She's off her game in AMMONITE, which evidently is the case for nearly all of her performances lately. Everything post-Lady Bird for sure.

On an unrelated note, Nathaniel, do you know if Nick Davis is planning on updating Nick-Davis.com with 2020 releases? I hope he's doing okay!
