Razzie Nominations: Music, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Hillbilly Elegy, etcetera

by Nathaniel R

We don't want to waste too much time on this but figured we share the nominees for the 41st annual Razzies. The Razzies dont often have much in common with the general awards season and usually go for easy marks rather than thinking about what actually constitutes bad acting or bad filmmaking. But this year there's a little more crossover since the savagely reviewed Sia musical Music as well as two Oscar contenders in various categories, the  overwrought Hillbilly Elegy and the critical and zeitgeist hit Borat Subsequent Moviefilm are both up for prizes...

Worst Picture

  • 365 Days
  • Absolute Proof
  • Dolittle
  • Fantasy Island
  • Music

Had to look up the first two: 365 Days is a romantic mafioso drama import from Poland that's streaming on Netflix and Absolute Proof is a right-wing propaganda documentary about the 2020 election.

Worst Actor

  • Robert Downey, Jr. - Dolittle
  • Mike Lindell (The “My Pillow” Guy) - Absolute Proof
  • Michele Morrone - 365 Days
  • Adam Sandler - Hubie Halloween
  • David Spade - The Wrong Missy

Worst Actress

  • Anne Hathaway - The Last Thing He Wanted AND Roald Dahl's The Witches
  • Katie Holmes - Brahms: The Boy II AND The Secret: Dare to Dream
  • Kate Hudson – Music
  • Lauren Lapkus - The Wrong Missy
  • Anna-Maria Sieklucka - 365 Days

Worst Supporting Actress

  • Glenn Close - Hillbilly Elegy
  • Lucy Hale - Fantasy Island
  • Maggie Q - Fantasy Island
  • Kristen Wiig - Wonder Woman 1984
  • Maddie Ziegler - Music

This is a very dumb category since both Glenn Close and Kristen Wiig are quite good in their movies even if the movies themselves aren't worthy of them. We think Close will land an Oscar nod on Monday... as confusing as that category is. If she does it will be the third time in history that a Razzie nominee for acting was also an Oscar nominee for acting. It happened twice in the 1980s: James Coco for Only When I Laugh (1980) and Amy Irving for Yentl (1983). We'd agree that Coco was pretty bad doing a gayface in the former but Irving's nomination was ridiculous, just the typical homophobia/misogyny of the Razzies since she was starring in a Barbra Streisand musical and musicals are often perceived as a gay and feminine  genre and that one literally is gay and feminine. Or, well, at least queer if not quite gay.

But IF the Razzies were actually good at their job there'd be more crossover because sometimes the Oscars really go for expired ham but they usually leave those performances alone.

Worst Supporting Actor

  • Chevy Chase - The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee
  • Rudy Giuliani (As "Himself") - Borat, Subsequent Movie-Film
  • Shia LeBeouf - The Tax Collector
  • Arnold Schwarzeneggar - Iron Mask
  • Bruce Willis - Breach, Hard Kill AND Survive the Night

The fact that Jared Leto isn't here for The Little Things is a missed opportunity.

Worst Screen Combo

  • Maria Bakalova & Rudy Giuliani (Yes, That Really IS Rudy Giuliani!) - Borat Subsequent Movie-Film
  • Robert Downey Jr. & His Utterly Unconvincing "Welsh" Accent – Dolittle
  • Harrison Ford & That Totally Fake-Looking CGI “Dog” – Call of the Wild
  • Lauren Lapkus & David Spade - The Wrong Missy
  • Adam Sandler & His Grating Simpleton Voice - Hubie Halloween

This is mean to Maria Bakalova who is sensational in Borat just to take yet another dig at Giuliani. A dumb move since they already "awarded" him in Supporting Actor.

Worst Director

  • Charles Band - All 3 Barbie & Kendra movies
  • Barbara Bialowas & Tomasz Mandes - 365 Days
  • Stephen Gaghan – Dolittle
  • Ron Howard - Hillbilly Elegy
  • Sia – Music

Worst Screenplay

  • 365 Days
  • All 3 Barbie & Kendra Movies
  • Dolittle
  • Fantasy Island
  • Hillbilly Elegy

Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel

  • 365 Days (Polish Remake/Rip-Off of Fifty Shades of Grey)
  • Dolittle (Remake)
  • Fantasy Island (Remake/”Re-Imagining”)
  • Hubie Halloween (Remake/Rip-Off of Ernest Scared Stupid)
  • Wonder Woman 1984 (Sequel)

A little perspective from a Glenn fan who is very much NOT a fan of her work in Hillbilly, going out to all the fans out there who love her Mamaw:

No one cares about the Razzies and neither should you.

They’re clearly aiming the press that might come along with someone getting a nom there and at the Oscars, which is CHEAP, but also kind of fun, so I can’t blame them. Amy Irving is wonderful in Yentl, and they did it to her too, so Glenn will be in good company.

That level of press may complicate Glenn’s path to Oscar, in a very unpredictable category, but it won’t wreck it.

Music: the movie destroyed by anyone who hasn't seen it.

Even Hillbilly Elegy is just hated for trand

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPP

I wish they had the guts to nominate Meryl for her most recent turds.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

@Peggy Sue- Totally agree.

If Glenn's Mamaw (which I don't think was Oscarworthy) deserves a Razzie nomination, Meryl should have won the Razzie outright for her horrific turn in August: Osage County.

The genuflection she receives is embarrassing, and I say this as someone who thinks she's the best actress working in the English language today.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterGilbert

Mike -- i agree that no one really cares. I dont think it would complicate her chances to win... especially if you accepts the Razzie. Sandra Bullock and Halle Berry got pretty great press for doing that. Shows you're a good sport about your career and fame and able to laugh at yourself (which is good for mental health in this fickle world)

March 12, 2021 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Glenn's okay. Some good moments, but ultimately nothing special. Let's just say if she's nominated for the Oscar as well, the Razzie is much MUCH closer to the deserved nomination out of the two.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

James Coco is laughing from his grave now that he's not the worst of the trio of Razzie/Oscar nominated performances.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

But why isn't Amy Adams nominated ? THAT would have been a very well-deserved nod.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterDl

I don't want Glenn to get an Oscar nomination for that performance (which is fine, the best in the film in fact, but doesn't elevate a dreadful film)... but a Razzie nomination is too much!!! Why not nominate Amy Adams instead (she tries to compensate for the fact that she's miscast and it turns out even worse)?

And yes, putting Maria Bakalova in there is cruel when it's obvious the nomination is more about Rudy Giuliani than it is about her, but it is typical of the Razzies (remember, they gave Worst Actor to George W. Bush for Fahrenheit 9/11).

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRichter Scale

The Razzies are complete garbage. Get your deserved Oscar, Glenn! The haters don't mean shit to you and never will!!!

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterQ

Sorry I mispoke. I meant get your makeup/sympathy/sorry for not awarding you sooner Oscar Glenn! I'm with Three Artful. Oscars should be based on careers and narratives, NOT best individual achievement of the calendar year

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterQ

Adams was miscast and Close was wildly disappointing. They both should be here, but since Close is unfortunately going to be nominated and win for this crud I'll allow just her being cited here.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMonty

Finally Hillbilly Elegy got the deserving worst director and screenplay noms. I would nominate Amy Adams tbh. Glenn Close was the best part but part of the nom is mostly as reaction for the most obnoxious and delusional attitude to think she CAN still win for that dreck LMFAO and even going in hordes per twitter for persecute anyone against their fantasies (Like the comment above)

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterLeon

Oscars should be based on careers and narratives, NOT best individual achievement of the calendar year

That's the reason of existence of Honorary Oscar, and tbh that career path Oscars was the first reason of having these issues

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterLeon

It's hilarious that Bakalova can win the Razzie and the Oscar for the same performance... but of course, there's a catch with the Razzie nom... the laugh is on Giuliani, not on her.

Seriously, if she wins, it is going to be one of the most deserving Oscar wins in History, specially given how much bias, AMPAS has for this kind of film.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

And the Streep hate continues....
Critics mostly agree from their reviews that Streep was possibly best in show in both films released in the fall but..... whatever.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Don't report on the Razzies. That will only encourage them.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMrW

The thing about the razzies, is that it feels very early-2000s/pre-social media, and their noms feel stuck in that place. This could be fun and poking at really bad films, but they somehow miss the mark. It seems like they're afraid to go after the big action studio misfires, like Wonder Woman 1984, which these awards are made for.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

Also, not sure how they nominate Hillbilly but miss Amy Adams? It just feels like they're intentionally being mean to an older actress. It just reinforces my belief that the Razzies are the ultimate dudebro awards.

I will say, though, that other than Maggie Q, all the other nominees are white. What's going on with the razzies? When are people going to start talking about #razziessowhite.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

Although Streep'slast 3 movies were not very good... she was always good in her role. The

Laundromat was horrible!!!!!

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterrdf

"If Glenn's Mamaw (which I don't think was Oscarworthy) deserves a Razzie nomination, Meryl should have won the Razzie outright for her horrific turn in August: Osage County."

Gilbert, I don't want to be mean about Meryl, who has a huge target on her back due to her seemingly endless supply of high profile film projects and Oscar nominations, but thinking about how much better that film could have been with Sissy Spacek as Violet makes me sad. I am all for Streep continuing to work and get love, but wish some of her very talented peers got a piece of the pie once in a while.

Glenn Close, despite her lack of an Oscar and the divisive reaction to her performance in 'Hillbilly Elegy,', continues to work more than many of her contemporaries. That is a huge gift in and of itself.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMike M.

The Razzies are always so hard on erotic misfires. But 365 Days deserves a nod for Best Sex Scene!

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMitch

Just curious since you brought it up, what Oscar nominees from the past would you have put on your Razzie ballot?

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterEdwin

Meryl does her best work in YEARS in Let Them All Talk so I don't get that comment.

The same can't be said for Glenn in HE, but who cares. If/when she gets the nomination, at least the expectations are low for a win this time. If she pulls it off, it'll be that much more fun! And that much less depressing when she loses to...???

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJF

If/when she gets the nomination, at least the expectations are low for a win this time.

Ha!, you should read prior comments of the delusional stans here or on twitter and GD, dear JF. They still believe she WILL win no matter what. And poor of you if you said otherwise.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterLeon

Poor Glenn! Soon to be amyirvinged before rubythewesed. She doesn’t deserve this fate.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAntônio

Finally a Bakalova nomination I can fully support

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

@Mike M: yes, Meryl was horrible in August Osage County. Not only Sissy Spacek but also Jessica Lange or Susan Sarandon would have been so much better. Similarly I can totally imagine Doubt and Into the Woods with Glenn replacing Meryl. That would have been a very interesting and much more fitting casting choice, I think Meryl was miscast in both movies (I am a huge fan of her, but since Prada I think she delivered magnificently only in Julie&Julia, Florence and The Post, I haven't seen Let Them All Talk yet)

As for Glenn razzie nomination, it's really annoying and ridiculous, because she is really the best part of a not so good but certainly not so terrible movie. If she is in, why leaving Amy out? This makes no sense. Stop hating on Glenn.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterFerdi

Sacha Baron Cohen should be Worst Actor and Worst Supporting Actor. And should win both.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSusanita

I think the reason they only nominated Glenn is to highlight how desperate it is on her part to expect to win the Oscar for Hillbilly Elegy - she has been campaigning heavily. It definitely has Glenn fans triggered, bringing up that old Close vs Streep "feud".

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterDl

The Razzies are fun. If we celebrate the Best, we can laugh at the Worst.
They didn't nominate Glenn Close because her work on the film is bad, because the film is weak and she's in it. The same with Kristen Wiig. They're good but their movies are not. For Worst Picture I'd replace 365 Days with Wonder Woman 2, the disappointment of the year in my opinion.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterGwen

Replacing Meryl also involves lower box office....it is still a business. That may mean that yes, there may be better actresses out there to suit the roles better....HOWEVER, this is true for ALL actors.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

The Razzies are homophobic, racist, and misogynistic. They shouldn't be covered in the first place on this website. Glenn Close was fine in Hillbilly Elegy and will be Oscar-nominated next week. That's all that is relevant in the end.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterLance

I think it's funny that they nominated Glenn. It was a widely panned film and people are only rooting for her out of sentiment. I would not be shocked if she was omitted for an Oscar nod, but there is a lot of sentiment for her so maybe they throw her a bone for a terrible film.

As for the fantasy football of other actresses playing past Meryl roles, dream on. The movies would never have been made. It's like Nathaniel (who I adore) saying that Michelle should have three Oscars, because he thinks so. Live to dream, but please live in reality.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterTom Ford

Worst Off Screen Combo razzie winner:
Glenn Close and her delusional fan cult.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSam

Lance,

The Oscars are homophobic, racist, and misogynistic too. And everybody wanna know about them. Frankly, Razzies aren't worst than their rich cousins Oscars and Globes. And have the advantage of not taking themselves seriously.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterGiovanni

Delusional just like a silent Diva in Sunset Boulevard. I simply love that.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterFerdi

@Giovanni: The Razzies will never reform itself, attempt to reform itself, or even want to do so. Those other organizations have at least started the process of reform. They aren't similar in any form.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterLance

Speaking of homophobic, racist, and misogynistic, do you GlennfansVision cult not know whose life Hillbilly Elegy is based upon?

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSam

The Razzies are just stupid and simplistic and knee-jerk. Hard to believe they're still around.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRob

At this point the biggest fan of anyone is @Sam, of Glenn Close supporters. I see QAnon has joined in too.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterwhunk

When Bullock won, she brought the script of "All About Steve" and read from it, asking if anyone could do better. No matter how good an actor is, a bad script can be a performance killer. Close did what she could with bad writing and directing. I haven't been a Ron Howard fan since "Parenthood," even if some of his movies have worked despite his boring direction.

I also think Lapkus was inspired in a guilty-pleasure movie that made me laugh more times than I will ever admit. And the thing I remember most about "Wonder Woman 1984" (other than Chris Pine and his fanny pack of course) are Wiig's haunted eyes. The performance is definitely underrated.

But the Razzies are fun. We are up to 100 awards shows a year (I watch every single one) so Hollywood pats its own back A LOT. The Razzies are nothing more than a gentle poke, even if I wish some of their choices were more inspired half of the time.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMike J.

For me the most notable thing about Wonder Woman is that they managed to hide the height difference between the statuesque Gadot and the short Pine. Incredible.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRafaello

I have receipts! You asked twitter on Nov 24th: "I'm in the mood to watch a bad movie (what, it happens some times) but i'm also really behind on my 2020 viewing so something bad from the now I guess. hmmm. what shall it be?"

I recommended 365 DAYS. I just knew it would be in awards contention. Haha.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Not surprised that Music got its deserving Razzie nominations but Glenn Close...

*EVIL LAUGH* Serves her right for degrading herself to try and get desperate in some lame-ass, schmaltzy Oscar-bait bullshit film that caters to the lowest common denominator.

365 Days... I've seen softcore films and pornos that were way better than that bullshit. Plus, a lot of those films are actually pretty good.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

I have to just note that in defending Streep, I am not trying to attempt to tear down or ridicule Glenn Close.
Not sure why, when it comes to actresses, most on this board spew vitriol and play a game of tearing down some artists to lift up others.
We DO NOT do this with male actors- of any age.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Jamie -- i wouldn't say "most"... we just have some veery loud people who are angry and pitting actresses against each other. and Streep & Close both definitely bring out the worst in people. I dont get why people do it. you CAN (and should) love many actresses simultaneously :)

Tom Ford -- wait i dont get what you're saying... are you saying it's "fantasy" to have an opinion about what an actor is worth outside of their awards stats? I definitely live in the real world. It sucks! ;) I know La Pfeiff has only 3 nominations and no wins. I'm saying she deserved 7 nominations and 3 wins. If we can't share our opinions about such things what is even the point of discussing Oscars? Pfeiffer has been undervalued for basically her entire career except for a brief moment 1988-1992 when people were like "ohmygod the most beautiful woman in the world is also a phenomenal actress! who knew?" and then all the Pfans were like "duh!" and yet the media and public seem to forget it on the regular so we have to keep going through this "oh wow she can act!" thing with people saying dumb things each time her movies come out like "her best performance ever" (even if its like mediocre for her -- the Stardust thing made me so crazy in 07)

March 12, 2021 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

She deserved a nod for Where is Kyra, it's bizarre and soul-crushing movie but I can name three or four scenes that still haunt. Ditto mother! for which she might've even deserved a win.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJF

I don't understand why some have to bring up Meryl (turds, deserve Razzies, replacement for her roles, etc) when this has nothing to do with her. And it's always the same old commenters....anyhow, nobody takes the Razzies seriously.

March 12, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJans

And the Glenndistas continue. They supposed don't count the Razzies and everything but then they put like cats attacking and now even using Streep lol. Desperation and delusion together.
