More after the jump including The Mitchells vs Machine popularity, new projects for Lewis Tan, Jamie Bell, Hilary Swank, and a book about uber depressing animated classic Grave of the Fireflies...
• /Film Jamie Bell to play a time travelling serial killer in the Apple series The Shining Girl opposite Elisabeth Moss
• Towleroad Ryan Reynolds wants Deadpool's queer identity explored in future films. Good luck with that.
• Vanity Fair Halston family complaining about Ryan Murphy's upcoming series for being "fictional". I hope everyone recognizing that all biopics are basically fiction (but they don't seem to). I'm not a fan of Ryan Murphy's work but also acknowledge that family members of famous people whose lives are dramatized are not infallible sources of "the truth" themselves. Everyone's got an agenda!

So it’s pronounced “Pair-ee” for Emily in Paris and “Pair-iss” for Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris? Okay...
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris -- Does it qualify for the Oscars?
Truth of Dare -- Saw it in a movie theater... with my father.
Halston -- Saw the documentary and he was fabulous but had quite a boring life for a biopic.
Good luck to Swank. She deserves a comeback after being snubbed for that heartbreaking performance in The Homesman.
I didn't realize that Halston was also by Ryan Murphy. It seems like we're at a point where any project with a starry cast and decent budget that's about queer people is by him. It seems really limiting given his obvious limits and vision as a storyteller. He has merits, but the fact that he does everything queer-adjacent by studios means there's a real limit in the product that we get.
Hopefully we'll get some more diversity in who gets to tell these stories in a few years. Wouldn't it be amazing if Amazon or some studio threw money at Lisa Cholodenko and Tarrell Alvin McCraney (or any other number of creators).
Interesting choice of Madonna photo for the oral history...
I couldn't agree with Joe G. more. It's a real shame that this era of streaming has thrown all its money (well Netflix money) at Ryan Murphy as far as gay-adjacent storytelling goes. There has to be better artists out there for this sort of thing.
Never mind that 'DiCaprio's unrecognisable' still from the new Scorsese that's been doing the rounds... Lily James is truly unrecognisable as Pam Anderson. Kudos to their hair & make-up team!
Finally a good role for Hilary Swank and Madonna's Truth or Dare was groundbreaking back in 1990 what a time to be alive.
" Ryan Reynolds wants Deadpool's queer identity explored in future films. "
Gay people don't believe this kind of thing anymore.
I'm gonna repeat: Gay people don't believe this kind of thing anymore.
[Because we know it's only a damn motherf*** queerbaiting!]
I was one of many who criticized Lily James' choice for Pamela Anderson and the images - so far - are incredible. I accept any kind of penance - except having to watch DC superhero movies.
I want to love The Mitchells vs Machines because it had a gay lead (yay) but the movie was too long and too boring and too repetitive and very similar to like 100 other animated movies we’ve already seen. I don’t wanna say it was bad but yeah.. it was kind of bad..
Ryan Murphy... this generation's Joe Esterhauz.
Great timing in a career renaissance for Jaime Bell right after the almost there showcase for him! Love the idea of him and Moss together.
Peggy Sue -- why wouldn't it qualify for the Oscars? (unless i'm missing something in your question)
John -- i didn't think it was "bad" at all but yeah, definitely repetitive.
Angel -- right? I haven't fallen for it in a long time (i'm not even falling for the Eternals stuff since we've even see these "gay kisses" before (which are barelly noticeable and usually in the background of crowd scenes) but i haven't yet weaned myself off of sharing the news when someone says something like this and I guess we should all probably collectively ignore such things until something *actually* happens. Sorry about that!
whunk -- thanks for noticing!
"The Mitchells vs. the Machines" was hugely enjoyable, but I think far from Oscar taste, and with more obvious contenders for Awards - Luca - coming soon... however, that's what I thought of "Big Hero 6" and it defeated "How to Train your Dragon 2" and I think that had a lot to do with the horrific snub of "The LEGO Movie" anywhere but in Song (it shamefully lost that one, as well), in what I think it is one of the most embarrassing snubs in Oscar history, as I think that, "The LEGO Movie" is a viable candidate for the 100 best films of all time, thanks to a sharp, multilayered screenplay full ideas, jawdropping production design, editing, cinematography (virtual), attention to detail, and a simply perfect twist that reshapes the whole experience... in my book, "The LEGO Movie" should have been nominated for Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Score, Song, Film Editing, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and of course, Animated Feature.
But as it was considered just a "funny LEGO comercial"...
Kudos to hair and makeup team definitely - but it will take more than hair and make up to convince me Lily James isn’t one of the most bland, overrated actresses working. Dead behind the eyes.
Nat : I think Peggy Sue meant for THIS years Oscars in which case, no.
