Another Round of Links

Scandinavia and the World makes a little joke about Denmark's Oscar winner Another Round
Welp Magazine lists the 20 best Film podcasts of 2021. So sweet (and a surprise) that they included us.
Variety Timothée Chalamet to play the young Willy Wonka in yet another origin movie/prequel to a popular film. (Sigh. we're so tired of fan-fiction as mainstream fiction. Mystery and using your own imagination is what makes so many classic characters great!)

More after the jump including new projects for Debra Messing, Lindsay Lohan, Yorgos Lanthimos, Sara Ramirez, and a win for Michelle Pfeiffer...

Deadline Debra Messing to star in film version of 13: The Musical. Unfortunately that is not a musical version of 13 starring Evan Rachel Wood and Holly Hunter but something else and it's actually about a young boy. Messing plays the mom.
AV Club Lindsay Lohan returning to acting with a Netflix Christmas movie
Cartoon Brew Boss Baby: Family Business will stream and play in theaters at the same time. This Warner Bros/HBOMax thing lookslike its going to catch on... only in this case it's Universal/Peacock
IndieWire Yorgos Lanthimos probably could have gotten any actor he wanted after The Favourite. For his next film, a gender-swapped reimagining of Frankenstein called Poor Things, the announced cast bears this out
Theater Mania Actor Samuel E Wright, who voiced Sebastian in The Little Mermaid and also originated the role of Mufasa in Broadway's The Lion King has died at 74
• AV Club John Cena gets in trouble for referring to Taiwan as a country. Strangely this article suggests he should and that its Western ignorance. But the politics are very complex and Taiwan does view itself as a country... so unilaterally suggesting that they aren't because China doesn't think they are is also problematic.
MNPP celebrates Tyrone Power in the airforce for Memorial Day and in Nightmare Alley
Out Sara Ramirez has joined the cast of HBO's Sex and the City sequelish And Just Like That... which brings the original cast back (well, except Kim Cattral)
Film School Rejects lists the best action sequence from each Marvel show. It's a list so naturally I have a gazillion quibbles especially that Captain America: Winter Soldier (which has the best action sequences from start to finish) picks a weird least interesting action moment
Cartoon Brew has been doing a series on which corporations own which animated characters for those who are curious about such things

FINALLY...

Michelle Pfeiffer pfinally gets a win for her performance in French Exit (pfinally also available on VOD). She's won Best Actress at the Canadian Screen Awards (formerly known as the Genies). The big winners at the event held a few days ago were Schitt's Creek (for TV), and Beans and Blood Quantum (for movies). We've updated the nomination post with the winners list

John Cena. He always told his fans to never give up. What a liar yet I'm not surprised since he often bends over for whatever is asked of him to make himself look strong. Not just in.... sports entertainment but also in life.

Can we stop trying to get Lindsay Lohan a comeback? Especially with a premise that is really a rip-off of Overboard. She doesn't deserve one as she's never taken responsibility for any of her actions and always does whatever it takes to latch on to whatever left of her 15 minutes of fame left. Just stop. Why can't she just disappear for good. Plus, shouldn't she be hanging out with her other MAGA friends? Seriously, fuck those people.

More than John Cena's apology, I really don't understand what AV Club is doing here. How do you address Cena's "Western ignorance" and then have a White writer basically claiming that Taiwan is not a country? Does she has some valuable intel that Cena did not? And to do so in such a nonchalant manner really makes no sense to me.

I also love (sarcasm) that Hollywood now have to apologize for getting some controversial idea between Taiwan and China "incorrect" (never mind that there are clear arguments FOR the idea that Taiwan is a country), where as Chinese stars (in Mainland, Taiwan, or Hong Kong) probably cannot say one correct thing about the BLM movement, as an example. We are all ignorant of many complex international relations, but one country just love seeking apologies.

Signed,
a disgruntled citizen (?) of Hong Kong

Taiwan is a de facto country. Period.

Chalamet as young Willy Wonka - it's what he deserves

Well done, Kim Cattrall.

Wish Lanthimos would go back to Greek cinema. Almodóvar never got that starstruck.

LOL You totally photoshopped that! That movie only exists in your head!

Taiwan is considered to be a country by most of the world. Most people do regard it as a country. There are 193 countries in the UN + Palestine and Vatican making it 195. Then most countries recognize Kosovo and Taiwan as countries making it 197.

I'm glad for Michelle but French Exit is a mess and her playing of Francis always seemed odd like she didn't have a grip on who she was Mahaffey stole the picture and if i see anymore mopey Lucas Hedges performances i'm going to scream, surely he can do other things than look after screen icons and look out from under his hair.

Taiwan is a country, but it's a challenge even having a discussion about it in China. Mention the 3 Ts (Taiwan, Tibet, Tiananmen) and I guess now Hong Kong, and you will be instantly shut down and considered a dumb foreigner.

Somewhat ironically French Exit has not yet been released in Canada.

I’m still waiting to watch it!

Fuck the CCP. And anyone who's standing by them

The young Willy Wonka movie sounds terrible. For this the director isn't giving us a third Paddington movie?

Wish Lanthimos would go back to Greek cinema. Almodóvar never got that starstruck.

You say this as though his English language movies aren't comparably strange. His weirdo has never left.

Chalamet's literally just gonna do his own take of Depp's performance. That film is already a non-entity, unless they shoot it like Nosferatu and rate it R, which, as if.

Don't read the AV Club much, huh? The house style there is "extreme snark." As such, you're falling into a trap if you read any of its articles in earnest.

Waiting for Lindsay to return to her golden years (she was excellent in Bobby). Unfortunately this Christmas movie is not the kind of comeback I’m expecting, but good luck anyway.

How I love Power’s military service imposing stache. I’m glad Pfeiffer and Mehta won Canadian Screen Awards, since so far their awards season has been underwhelming. Now I wanna watch Beans

May 26, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMirko

There are worse choices than Emma Stone, Willam Dafoe & Mark Ruffalo for an English language film from a foreign auteur, right?

May 26, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterChoog

That Timothée Chalamet Willy wonka origin story will only work as an snl sketch starring Timothée Chalamet with Kate McKinnon as Augustus Gloop

May 26, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterThankfully

Total agreeance on the uselessness of a Willy Wonka origin story and very disappointed that Timothée C is involving himself in the project. Ugh.

Just watched French Exit last night, well, Michelle is great beacuse she is Michelle but the film is just soulless and boring, have no idea why people thought it could be an Oscar contender, maybe with someone like Anderson or Lanthimos directing it the material would soar. The way it is, watch it for Pfeiffer's performance, she deserves the attention.
