Not anticipating the discussion around Flora Robson in Saratoga Trunk and the use of blackface. The decision to cast Robson over an actress of color was considered wrong even in 1943.

Jesus, in the old days I'd have fun back and forthing with your comments, but with the current climate on the vlog I will just say: Bless.

Olivia Colman is co-lead.

2020:

Seyfried-2
Close-3
Youn-4
Bakalova-4
Colman-5

Pp except Seyfried being at minimum equal to close, in reality better, so swith their grades and tou are spot on!

The narrative of "Judi Dench won for Shakespeare in Love because she was ROBBED for Mrs. Brown!" annoys me. Helena Bonham Carter was much better in 1997 in The Wings of the Dove and should have won the Golden Globe and BAFTA that went to Dench for that middlebrow, glorified TV movie.

Dench is a very good actress, albeit over-rewarded by the Academy. I would not have nominated her for Mrs. Brown, Chocolat, or Mrs. Henderson Presents, and don't necessarily think she needed to win an Oscar at any point.

I guess a lotta people will finally get around to Hillbilly Elegy today and tomorrow...

2000, what a thrill.

I can't wait for folks to revisit Bates' sublime PRIMARY COLORS turn - it's really one of the all-time great Supporting Actress noms.

Would 1974 be too obvious? This is the one smackdown I'd like to see added.

April 30, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterDave

@Dave: The 1974 Smackdown was covered at the original Smackdown sight, go there to see:

Can't wait for this edition of the smackdown! P.S. Nathaniel, Miss Gale Sondergaard's surname is Sondergaard, not Sondegaard ;)

Have the 2010-2015 performances been covered anywhere? Did I miss them?

May 30, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterWes

Wes -- they have not. We figured it was too early to revisit them. But people seem to want the series to continue so who knows.

May 30, 2021 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Never want this series to end! Please consider doing the 2010-2015 lineups that haven't been done! And it would even be fun to revisit a few special line-ups that were previously covered at Stinky Lulu? Some of the more iconic lineups that come to mind are 1939, 1940, 1950, 1956 and 1971.

1998... the Oscars got it soooo wrong... my best picture line up...

Gods and Monsters
El Milagro de P. Tinto (winner)
Primary Colors
The Thin Red Line
La Vita é Bella

Only 2 of the nominees were nominated. Only 2 of the 5 got some important Oscars. 1 was completely snubbed and probably wasn't even ellegible as it wasn't released - as far as I am aware - in the USA... and it is my winner (without any othe nominee coming close...)

Blatant snub (another one) for Travolta, who was pitch-perfect as his Bill Clinton spoof/impersonation and giving him enough shades and humanity to help see him as a really complex, three-dimensional character. Emma Thompson was also robbed for the same film, which is one of Mike Nichols' best.

June 1, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

I remember LOVING Hilary and Jackie when I first saw it, both actresses were amazing.

June 29, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJ

Dianne Wiest so deserved her Oscar for Hannah and her sisters. And she also deserved another for Bullets over Broadway.

But she was also sensational in Parenthood and The Birdcage.

We need to see more of Diane!
