BAFTA TV Award Winners: I May Destroy You, Welcome to Chechnya
The BAFTA TV Awards were announced yesterday with Michaela Coel's critically acclaimed I May Destroy You winning Best Actress and Best Mini-Series (it had previously taken Writing, Directing, and Editing at the "Bafta Craft awards). The Crown did not fare well (hits too close to home?) and Steve MQueen's Small Axe picked up just one major prize (Supporting Actor for Malachi Kirby). In better news, Paul Mescal won Best Actor for his exquisite work on Normal People and the superb queer documentary Welcome to Chechnya, which Oscar so unwisely snubbed last season, picked up another award. The winners are listed after the jump...

The BAFTA Craft Awards, like the Emmy Craft awards, are held earlier -- basically only the Oscars still give pride of place to talented artists behind the camera. All other awards shows now do such things on separate nights where they get almost no press, we're sad to say. Steve McQueen's anthology series Small Axe fared better there where it took five prizes (Costume Design, Makeup and Hair, Photography and Lighting, Casting, and Production Design). The Crown lost all of it scategories in Craft just as it lost them in the "above the line" categories.

I urge everyone to watch I May Destroy You. It’s the most tremendous work of television I’ve seen in a decade.
I'm a bit surprised to see Aimee Lou Wood win. She got a good storyline in her show's second season and gave a nice performance, but it didn't really scream award worthy to me (especially given all the ladies to great work on that show). It's interesting that Sex Education pulls in so many nominations...except for its biggest stars (Anderson and Butterfield) and never in the top category. Hopefully, they come back strong in season 3.
Glad Michaela Coel won. I think this more than makes up for the Golden Globe snub.
So happy for Coel.
I really love the categories of the TV BAFTAS (especially for soaps and must see event).
Will check some of the nominees and winners.
Wow! They just nominated Helena Bonham Carter among all the actresses in The Crown?
I. May. Destroy. You.
Coel and Mescal! Yes! I would've voted for them to win as well.
How very color purple of them to completely ignore The Crown for such a magnificient season.
Surprised that none of the phenomenal actresses in Talking Heads made it. Particularly happy with Malachi's win. I think he's adorable and steals all his scenes in Small Axe.
Please tell me that It's a Sin was uneligible.
did drag race UK 2 not make it anywhere ?
Peggy Sue - their eligibility is 1st January - 31st December so It’s A Sin will be eligible for next year’s awards...
Thanks, Kermit. I hope they have good memory.
A well-deserved sweep for I May Destroy You, although a small part of me wishes Hayley Squires had received more traction for her astonishing performance in Adult Education, one of the most thought-provoking, thorny miniseries of last year.
I definitely don't think The Crown is too close to home! There's nothing British people love more than the royal family, so I think it's just a case of the competition being a lot stronger this year.
While you are here, you should definitely check out all 6 seasons of Inside No 9.
I'm happy to see "I May Destroy You" win a ton, and delighted that Paul Mescal was finally recognized for his starmaking performance.
FINALLY, Paul Mescal won something big for his tremendous performance in Normal People!
