The Movie-Related Nominees for the 65th Annual Grammy Awards

by Nathaniel R

Each year when the Grammy nominations are announced we report on nominees of interest to film fans. But before we get to the screen entertainment-adjacent stuff, we must first acknowledge the recording industry's three marquee categories: Album, Record, and Song of the year. We have a repeat of 2017 with Adele & Beyoncé squaring off yet again for the top prize. Beyoncé leads the nominations this year with 9 and as of today is tied with her husband Jay-Z as the most nominated musician of all time at the Grammys since they've each  received 88 nominations over the course of their careers...

ALBUM OF THE YEAR - goes to the artist, featured artists, songwriters, producers, and sound team

  • "30 -Adele
  • "Good Morning Gorgeous" - Mary J Blige
  • "Harry's House" -Harry Styles
  • "In These Silent Days" - Brandi Carlile
  • "Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers" - Kendrick Lamar
  • "Music of the Sphere" - Coldplay
  • "Special" - Lizzo
  • "Renaissance" - Beyoncé
  • "Un Verano Sin Ti" - Bad Bunny
  • "Voyage" ABBA

SONG OF THE YEAR - goes to the songwriters

  • "abcdefu" - Gayle, Sara Davis, Dave Pittenger
  • "About Damn Time" - Lizzo, Eric Frederic, Blake Slatkin, Theron Makiel Thomas
  • "All Too Well (10 Minute Version) - Taylor Swift, Liz Rose
  • "As It Was" -Harry Styles, Tyler Johnson, Kid Harpoon
  • "Bad Habit" - Steve Lacy, Matthew Castellanos, Brittany Foushee, Diana Gordon, John Carroll Kirby
  • "Break My Soul" - Beyoncé, S Carter, Terius 'The Dream' Gesteelde-Diamant, Christopher A Stewart
  • "Easy on Me" - Adele, Greg Kurstin
  • "God Did" -DJ Khaled, Tarik Azzouz, E Blackmon, F LeBlanc, Shawn Carter, John Stephens, Dwayne Carter, William Roberts, Nicholas Warwar
  • "The Heart Part 5" - Kendrick Lamar, Jake Kosich, Johnny Kosich, Matt Schaeffer
  • "Just Like That" - Bonnie Raitt

Adele has won this category twice and Beyoncé once but curiously Taylor Swift has never won, despite six nominations over the years. We had no idea that re-recorded material could be nominated for a song-writing prize. Seems... odd.

RECORD OF THE YEAR - (artist listed for clarity but this category goes to the producers and sound team)

  • "About Damn Time" - Lizzo
  • "As It Was" - Harry Styles
  • "Break My Soul" - Beyoncé
  • "Don't Shut Me Down - ABBA
  • "Easy on Me" - Adele
  • "Good Morning Gorgeous" - Mary J Blige
  • "The Heart Part 5" - Kendrick Lamar
  • "Woman" - Doja Cat
  • "You and Me On the Rock" - Brandi Carlisle featuring Lucius

OKAY ON THE GENERAL ENTERTAINMENT STUFF...
Here at The Film Experience, we're naturally more concerned with the TV and film categories... and also musical theaters because we're NYC based. So in that regard these are our categories of interest.

MUSICAL THEATER ALBUM

  • Caroline or Change (New Broadway Cast)
  • Into the Woods (New Broadway Cast)
  • MJ The Musical (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Mr Saturday Night (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Six: Live on Opening Night (Original Broadway Cast)
  • A Strange Loop (Original Broadway Cast)

Surprisingly no EGOT potential to announce here since many of the nominees already have Grammys or don't yet have Oscars or Tonys or Emmys.

COMPILATION SOUNDTRACK FOR VISUAL MEDIA

  • Encanto
  • Elvis
  • Stranger Things: Soundtrack, Season 4
  • Top Gun: Maverick
  • West Side Story

Really rooting for Elvis for this one! Grammys do not go by a full calendar year for eligibility  hence the inclusion of some of 2021 and some of 2022 in these prizes.

SCORE SOUNDTRACK FOR VISUAL MEDIA

  • The Batman - Michael Giacchino
  • Encanto - Germaine Franco
  • No Time to Die - Hans Zimmer
  • Power of the Dog - Jonny Greenwood
  • Succession: Season 3 - Nicholas Britell

Interesting that Dune, the winner of Oscar's parallel category, wasn't nominated.  Dune beat Encanto and Power of the Dog to that Oscar (No Time To Die failed to score a nom) but both of those defeated titles made it here to the Grammys without their conqueror.

Oh and here's an interesting related note: film composer Danny Elfman received another nomination but in the category of "Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella" for the main titles of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (the only movie nominee in that category)

SONG WRITTEN FOR VISUAL MEDIA

  • "Be Alive" - King Richard
  • "Carolina" - Where the Crawdads Sing
  • "Hold My Hand" - Top Gun Maverick
  • "Keep Rising" - The Woman King
  • "Nobody Like U" - Turning Red
  • "We Don't Talk About Bruno" - Encanto

Last year's winner in Oscar's parallel category, "No Time To Die", was the Grammy winner a year before that due to the very prolongued wait for that movie and the song's early release. "We Don't Talk About Bruno" was famously NOT submitted for the Oscar last season and "Be Alive" was a nominee. The other four new Grammy nominees in this category  could well turn up as Oscar nominees for Best Original Song in January. Do you think any of them will?

MUSIC VIDEO

  • "All Too Well: The Short Film" - Taylor Swift
  • "As it Was" - Harry Styles
  • "Easy on Me" - Adele
  • "The Heart Part 5" - Kendrick Lamar
  • "Woman" - Doja Cat
  • "Yet to Come" - BTS

Okay I love... deeply love... Adele, but it's always mystifying when her music videos get awards love.  Mostly she just sits in a chair or sings into the camera. While there are a few exceptions, her music videos don't tend to scream "AMAZING USE OF THE FORM!"

MUSIC FILM

  • "Adele: One Night Only"
  • "Billie Eilish Live at the 02"
  • "Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story"
  • "Justin Bieber - Our World"
  • "Motomami" - Rosalia TiktTok Live Performance
  • "Neil Young and Crazy Horse - A Band, A Brotherhood, A Barn

POTENTIAL EGOT ALERT !!!

Directors/Performers Mel Brooks "All About Me!", Questlove "Music Is History", and Lin-Manuel Miranda "Aristotle and Dante..." are up against Oscar-winning actors Jamie Foxx "Act Like You Got Some Sense" and Viola Davis "Finding Me" in the category of Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording. If Viola wins this she completes her EGOT.  She already has 1 Emmy (How To Get Away With Murder), 1 Oscar (Fences), and 2 Tony Awards (King Hedley II, Fences).

UH-OH

"Best Comedy Album" nominations are a triggering nightmare for cancel culture discourse online since both Dave Chappelle "The Closer" and Louis CK "Sorry" are nominated. The other nominees are Jim Gaffigan "Comedy Monster", Patton Oswalt "We All Scream", and Randy Rainbow "A Little Brains, A Little Talent".

The 65th annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 5th, 2023 in Los Angeles.

Re: the Adele music video comments - I thought Rolling in the Deep was pretty stellar, capturing the fiery emotion of that song very well. And that's the only other time the Grammys nominated her videos.

I thought Hello was pretty well done in an epic diva breakup ballad sort of way - it brought the drama! But it was not nominated... so I think this Easy on Me nomination (a snooze of a video) is makeup to Xavier Dolan for Hello.

The Grammys.... the most irrelevant awards ever.

The Grammys would totally nominate Lydia Tár and likely give her a win again. She should narrate her memoir.

Gosh, imagine ENCANTO losing AGAIN to a Billie Eilish/Finneas O'Connell song (No Time to Die at the Oscars and possibly Turning Red here).

Dune was nominated last year. It lost to Soul and The Queen's Gambit

Well Done Mary J 30 years in the industry and still turning out quality.

Yes, I have to second Philip H.: Rolling in the Deep is one of my all-time best music videos
