Box Office Calm Before the "Wakanda Forever" Storm

By Ben Miller

To say studios are anxious to make room for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is an understatement.  With only one new wide release (and a niche release, at that), the weekend box office looked much like it did the week before.  The total box office came in under $60 million, but that is all in anticipation of an expected $150-200 million opening next weekend.

Awards hopefuls like The Banshees of InisherinTill, Armageddon Time, and TAR all managed decent box office, but nothing to break out of the crowded market.  The big box office surprise is Smile, which is a hair under $100 million domestic and another $100 million internationally.  Don't underestimate the star power of... Sosie Bacon.

Next weekend, Wakanda Forever has no other wide release competiton.  That being said, Steven Spielberg's autobiographical Oscar front-runner The Fabelmans debuts in select theaters.

What did you see this weekend? I had a busy weekend with a pair of first-time watches of Terry Gilliam's Brazil and Zhang Yimou's Hero.  I also caught the heartwarming documentary Oscar-hopeful Good Night Oppy.

Not that Disney/Marvel’s dominance hasn’t already been talked about to death, but it is very concerning to me that we’ve now reached the point where not only do other studios not want to compete directly with them on opening weekend, but they don’t even want to release films too close to the release date of a Marvel movie in anticipation of its dominance. I fear for the day when there is simply no counter-programming available in theaters — at least not in mainstream multiplexes anyway, and as much as I am hopeful about independent theaters, I also realize they’re not an option everywhere, and it’s really going to suck if you basically HAVE to live in a major city to see anything other than mega franchise movies in a theater.

In theaters, I saw two of my favorite movies of the year, Armaggedon Time and Tar. I also saw Triangle of Sadness. THIS beat Decision to Leave for the Palme?!

At home, I watched the new Selena Gomez doc, which was entertaining, and Causeway, which featured two excellent performances but was kind of dry.

Saw and really dug BANSHEES OF INISHERIN. Colin Farrell is the best I've ever seen him.

I also saw GOOD NIGHT OPPY, which reminded me a lot of MY OCTOPUS TEACHER - very sentimental, and I was constantly aware of the attempts to manipulate my emotions, but still a good movie because of its footage. (Which of course also means it could be a genuine threat for an Oscar win.)

And I also took in:

- TICKET TO PARADISE aka The Perfect Example Of Why We Don't Need To Return To The Classic Rom-Com Type. Full of mean and selfish characters, and mean and selfish life lessons.

- a couple of good films in the local British Film Festival - THE LOST KING (up to the standard you'd expect from a film directed by Stephen Frears, written by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope, and starring Sally Hawkins), and BRIAN AND CHARLES (bust-a-gut funny, although the boomer audience I saw it with seemed to not quite get the level of humour pitched)

- SISSY, the highlight of the weekend. Aussie horror-comedy that is nominated for Best Picture, Director and Lead Actress at the AACTAs and thoroughly deserving (Aisha Dee would be an unlikely but deserving winner of the acting award). The second great Gen Z satire of the year (after BODIES BODIES BODIES). For Australians, it is in cinemas now, and for others, I believe it will show up on Shudder soon (if not already there in some regions).

see how they run - was really looking forward to this but disappointed. looks great but sloppily paced and underwritten. a terrific cast wasted, with the exception of saoirse ronan, who is adorable

heartstopper - finally got around to bingeing this. undeniably cute, but when i was a teenage boy [admittedly, many decades ago] the idea of sex was constantly on our minds, so it seemed weirdly alien that it didn't rate a mention in this world. nice to see actual teenagers playing teens for a change [although if stockard channing had turned up as an exchange student i wouldn't have complained]

Finally got around to seeing Nomadland. Filmed in 2019, I really had a chuckle when Fern was at a gas station and the price showed $2.89 a gallon in the background. The Blu-Ray extras included a Q&A at the Telluride premiere Sept. 2020. How utterly bizarre, in a time capsule sense, to see a movie premiere forced to be at a outdoor, socially distancing drive-in. Participants honked for applause or flickered their car lights. Even the host had to set the Covid rules onstage with Frances, Chloe and the other nomads about distancing themselves onstage 6 feet apart, keeping their face masks on when not answering questions & only lowering the mask when answering questions. Did we exactly live through that?!?

Saw Banshees and was not expecting to love it as much as I did. This is turning into a strong year as I really love that, Women Talking, Aftersun, Bros and Triangle of Sadness and appreciate the quality of Tar. But yeah hope Banshees wins screenplay and Colin was fantastic.

I saw “Tar”. I was impressed that Cate Blanchett spoke German. Yet another thing she’s good at.

About an hour into the movie, I had an alien thought. I thought, “I hate Art”. I’ve never had that thought before.

I would be sad if the actresses I’ve seen so far, Michelle Yeoh and Viola Davis, didn’t get an Oscar nomination, but I’d be okay with Blanchett being passed over.

It’s puzzling. I got most of the musical references and I admired the work of Nina Hoss and Naomie Merlant, and usually I love lengthy discussions about art.

But I kind of felt it was like a David Mamet play, meant to provoke opinionated outbursts from the paying punters. For me, Blanchett was all virtuosity, but nobody there, no soul.

I got covid so I am catching up on my DVR:

Inside Man: exciting bank heist. Jodie was really good as the icy 'fixer'

The War of the Roses: meh- Kathleen Turner was good, but nothing great about the whole movie

Elizabeth-the Golden Age: Blanchett is great- I can't wait to get better and see her in Tar. Also Clive Owen was at his peak hotness. Whatever happened to him? Shouldn't have have had multiple nominations by now?

My younger brother is very fond of watching movies. That's why I thought it necessary to share this post with him. Because in this post some new updates about BOX Office were written. He also thanked me for sharing this post. After that my brother sent me a link of a papersowl.com review website. When I clicked on https://essayservicescanner.com/papersowl-review/ link of that website. So at that time a website page of Essay Writing Service opened in front of me. I had also seen about this website yesterday in the news. My friend also ordered some essay writing from this website.
