2022 Chita Rivera Awards Nominees Announced

by Nathaniel R

The Chita Rivera Awards took time off due to COVID but they're back with a grab bag mix of the 2020 and 2022 Tony seasons and the 2021 movie year  The awards are named after Broadway's high kicking living legend, and they honor choreographers of shows and individual dancers. They also honor movies that involve dancing (though not individual dancers) though weirdly not tv shows! Here are their movie nominations this year...

Outstanding Choreography for a Theatrical Release

  • Cinderella (Choreographer: Ashley Wallen; Assistant Choreographer: Jenny Griffin)
  • Everyone’s Talking About Jamie (Choreographer: Kate Prince; Assistant Choreographer: Tommy Franzen)
  • In the Heights (Choreographer: Christopher Scott)
  • tick, tick…BOOM! (Choreographer: Ryan Heffington; Associate Choreographer: Ryan Spencer)
  • West Side Story (Choreographer: Justin Peck; Associate Choreographer: Craig Salstein)

Outstanding Direction of a Documentary Release

  • Ballerina Boys The Trocaderos, Chana Gazit and Martie Barylick
  • Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters, Tom Hurwitz and Rosalynde LeBlanc
  • Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, Oliver Bokelberg
  • First Try, Josh Prince
  • Maurice Hines: Bring Them Back, John Carluccio

You can say a complete list of nominees at The Broadway Blog which includes both Sutton Foster and Hugh Jackman from The Music Man.

Broadway hunk Tony Yazbeck (why hasn't Hollywood come calling?) wasn't Tony-nominated for playing Cary Grant in the musical Flying Over Sunset but he did receive a Chita Rivera nomination for that role (he previously won this prize in 2018). He's one of Broadway's most thrilling dancers so we're always happy to see him.
